- Thanks to Sugar High subscriber Michelle for a great question about the latest round of recalls on the Type 2 Diabetes medication metformin. Extended release metformin has been subject to several recalls over the past year due to contamination with a probable human carcinogen called NDMA. In this video, PA David explains what's going on, what the risk is, and what to do if your supply of metformin is affected by the recalls.
Michelle also has a UA-cam channel that, among other things like general weight loss tips, discusses certain aspects of diabetes from the diabetic person's perspective. Check out Michelle's channel Tasting Positive here: / @tastingpositive8880
I had to get off Meformin, I was getting "liver reflux' and when I called my PA about what was happening, she told me to get off of it ASAP - like NOW!!
Thanks my parents were about to discontinue their medication
Why was Zantac totally taken off the market, but Metformin and Losartan manufacturers can continue to produce the products that may be contaminated. You can't convince me that these manufacturers check every batch to be sure they don't contain NDMA.
For zantac or ranitidine, NMDA was found in all of the brand across the board not just for zantac. As for metformin and losartan on few product faced the issues.
I personally don't agree with the discontinuation of zantac as the amount of NMDA found in it was less than that found in our daily food consumption. With discontinuation of zantac, we hv to opt for proton pump inhibitor that have severe side effects.
In drug production, all batch must go trough QC and QA before going into market. I worked in pharmaceutical 5yr ago and during that time we did test for impurities like metals but not for NMDA. I am not sure of the requirement now as NMDA is a recent year issue
@@winw4548 I certainly wish they hadn't discontinued Zantac since nothing else worked like it.
I’m curious if it’s normal for insulin resistance to get “worse” over time. I’m tired of all the money I have to spend to stay healthy and dealing with healthcare professionals who don’t believe me.
Hi. When left uninterrupted, insulin resistance tends to worsen over time. Thankfully, there's a lot that we can do with dietary changes, exercise, and (most importantly) weight loss to turn that progression around and improve the situation.
Get on a low carb diet to keep your blood sugar in check. That avoids drinking pills that will eventually make you sick anyway.
With the Holidays (and baking season) coming up, what diabetic-friendly substitutes do you recommend? I was just diagnosed diabetic last month and plan on sticking to my diet (already lost 25lbs with WW), but wasn't sure if the veterans have any tips to enjoy holidays without risking sugar spikes.
lacanto is great
EXERCISE.
Metformin makes me feel blah
Here's a question. If there is a successful formula for metformin, why are companies changing this formula? That sounds very dangerous. So, 15 companies are messing with this formula................. Really!!!
do you do telehealth?
How a person with Type2 diabetes can make sure before starting a treatment that he has insulin resistance or less insulin production (not more) that is causing high blood sugar?
Most of Diabetic people struggle with obesity. It will be more beneficial for audience if you can provide good info about prescribed weight loss drugs which can change life totally for people who are diabetic and cant loose weight or elderly .
Medicine such as
Phentermine,
Orlistat
Contrave
Topiramate.
Thanks for your feedback. A video covering weight loss meds and their role is a great idea.
Just cut off carbs! No rice, noodles, pastas, breads, pastries!
@@sugarhighchannel still waiting for that video.

Also, what camera do you use?
I use a Sony a6400 camera and this video was shot using the Sigma 30 mm lens at f1.4.

I am a type 2 diabetic and my A1C is 6.7. I am 5 feet tall and have a struggling weight of 165. I have been on metformin for a couple years now. My new family doctor is wanting me to try GLP 1 medication and I have never heard of these. Trying to do research and I am on disability and medicare. Medicare insurance doesn't like to pay for a lot of new things. I also have severe osteoporosis. Any suggestions????
Vitamin D to 20,000 +K2 100mg to help osteoporosis.
It might be a good idea to talk about new studies going on addressing diabetes. I'm reading that Tirzepatide is in the final stages of clinical trials and the results to date are showing amazing results bringing A1C to a normal 5.7 in most people in the study. Is this true?? Any other triasl note discussing??
Tirzepatide is definitely showing some real promise. I've actually been involved with some of the clinical trials and have been excited by what I've seen. You can definitely plan on seeing an update video as these studies wrap up and FDA approval gets closer!
Why is it so hard to control diabetes?
So are you a doctor 👨⚕️ ?
I’m a PA
Thank you for the shout out in your bio! I’ve been visiting family and finally had a chance to sit down and watch this. I will leave another comment after I am able to fully listen and absorb the information. I’ve started taking my metformin again 🙏🏻
Glad to see you're doing ok. Hope this was helpful to put everything into context.
Why did you leave taking Metformin?
Incredible camera quality! Love the blurred background and hyper focus
Thanks so much!
how does that work, after 17 years they have to give up their recipe on how to make the drug?
Greetings, the drug patent lasts only 20 years, brand-name drug producers move quickly to profit on their product to recovery R&D (research and development) and other costs. If the patent lasted longer or indefinitely it would block any competition, leaving the market/consumer at the peril of the patent producer (i.e. pricing, availability, quality etc.). Reason why here in the US we have Monopoly/Antitrust laws to balance everyone’s interest (producers & consumers).
The recipe on how the drug is made is already known and public knowledge even before the medication ever comes to market, since the molecule structure of the medicine is given in all FDA filings. What they give up after the patent expires is the right to sue another pharmaceutical manufacturer for making the same molecule.
My mom taught me to do my own thinking. I learn of Metformin because here in the Wisconsin area its commonly the go to drug for Type 2 diabetics. Now I love how informative your videos are, but this drug shown me first hand how its results in my friend delivered him a Type 1 status. What is most alarming doctors never thought to switch him to a new medication. I view my diagnoses as my body is no longer to tolerate eating habits taught from child hood, and throughout adult hood. I had a first hand view how diabetes associated with a Lupus diagnoses behave, and that was enough for me to know if I am ever diagnose (which happen in 2011) I will need to make some better decisions. Well from then to this year (2020) I reach a n all time glucose meter reading of 498. I know what you thinking, needed to go to the hospital, actually no. I zero out, yes shut it down the consumption of all empty calories. Yea you think I know better so I will do better, but I am human, done beating on myself, and happy to share that in one week my sugar level got down 234. That is very good, considering were I came from. Now I have since seen my doctor and I opted in for Farxiga 5mg, along side my current med Onglyza 5mg. I am really watching this Farxiga, since the complications are serious, I don't wish to have to deal with any of them. Do your research and find what works for you. Because prior to the new med, creating a restricted window to eat, and watching what I eat doing that time, and fasting the remaining time took over 200 points before becoming medicated. It is like Dr. Fung stated, diabetes is a diet of choice disease, and most doctors want to heavily medicate which is only trying to control the symptom of the disease.
Thanks for your comment. I'm thrilled to hear of your improvements in diet and glucose control. Great job! I do want to clarify for anyone that might be reading this that metformin doesn't have the ability to cause someone to become Type 1 diabetic. Type 1 is an auto-immune disease in which the immune system attacks the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas.
Sounds a lot more likely that your friend was misdiagnosed as Type 2 and had either LADA or some other less commonly diagnosed version of diabetes. The drug isn't at fault for that and didn't play a role in the development of his autoimmune disease.
Pictures of pills might help.
