    Jeff, I live in Denver and it's 101 right now. My condo association bitched about the very discreet Japanese window A/C unit I use to augment the Bromide exchange "A/C" the property employs, and I am submitting a request for approval on that, but I had the same brilliant idea today you did 5 years ago! I googled "A/C unit in fireplace" and found your video. If they don't approve me to use my unit I will pick up the beastliest unit that will fit in my fireplace and I'm doing this. Brilliant. I liked and subscribed.

    Just keep in mind the primary downside of using a fireplace. Window A/Cs have two radiators. The one in the front extracts heat from interior air. The one in the back discharges that heat. *Its efficiency depends on the temperature difference between the two.* That is why it is called a "heat pump." The hotter the incoming air for the back radiator, the less efficient it will be. In a traditional installation, that air temperature will be the outside temperature. In a fireplace installation, that temperature will be whatever builds up inside the fireplace. That is why it is very important to make sure its ventilation is sufficient. If it is 100 degrees outside but 110 inside the fireplace this system will not work as well as one mounted in a window. You might want to put a fan in the fireplace vent.

  • @Inkling777
    @Inkling777 Рік тому +1

    A fascinating idea! Those having trouble getting sufficient heat venting might put a fan on the fireplace vent. If moisture is a problem, you might use a dehumidifier to grab most of that. It will add heat, but is must better than an A/C at ridding the air of moisture and humidity is at least half your misery.

    Now this looks like a solution to my problem. I am hesitant to install window air conditioner thru my living room window because it does not look good in the front of my house plus the heat will go right into my front patio. So I was thinking of installing the a/c unit into my fireplace and searched youtube if someone already did this and wahlah!!! here I am found this helpful video. I will try to do this tomorrow and I will come back and post about the outcome. Thank you!

      Hi John, if this works as good as it appears it will then this great idea will save me thousands because of not needing to replace my Central Air. Thanks for your awesome videos!!
      I'am just a little concerned that the natural heat convection will be able to rise fast enough to the top of the flue which is two stories because if it doesn't then will there will be excessive heat build up around the air conditioner and depending on how much heat it could considerably shorten the air conditioner's life-expendancy or worst.
      Another thought is that my flue is a medal one and if the heated vapor would cool enough before expelling out the top and thus create a wet condition inside the flue and then cause a corrosion situation!
      Any thoughts on this or perhaps i'am being too paranoid. lol

    Lift the bottom edge up to allow more airflow into the flue and prevent condensation. Or drill some 3" holes if it already cut.

    My solution is to leave the ash bin hatch open on the fireplace floor and leave the cleanout hatch outside also open. I then run my condensation tube through the fireplace floor and out to the outside cleanout hatch. If the condensation tube source is elevated above the tube exit, fluid will siphon to the exit. Also cooler air enters in the cleanout hatch and through the fireplace floor hatch into the fireplace where the air is heated by the air conditioner heat exchanger. The lighter hot air then rises up the chimney creating a thermosiphon effect. You have to insure no air leaks from the back of the air conditioner into the house and it is also a good idea to put a screen over your outside cleanout hatch.

    • @pyro8455

    I did try this. I was sitting around my living room thinking where could I put a window unit in? I as thinking I could cut a hole in the wall and my wife would never go for that, although I am very skilled at building. I then looked at my fireplace and thought I could duct the hot air up the chimney and thought I would look on you tube first. I found your video and decided to try it. My first unit was a 10,000 BTU and that flipped the breaker as soon as I turned it on cool! I only have a 15 amp breaker, which the unit called for, it didn't say "isolated" plug, until I opened the install book. I went back and got a 8,000 BTU unit and that works quit well in our 410 sq ft room, although it says only good for 340 sq ft. I did have to run the cord behind the fake white brick board and I did insulate it on the front side. I also fitted 2, 4 inch fans in the front in the front to help the heat escape out the damper. Before I did that it did not draw enough air and over heated the air conditioner, which then just blew out warm air. Looks quit nice and people cannot even tell the air conditioner is in the fireplace :) Thanks for the video

    I have a portable (on wheels) air conditioner that I am trying to vent out the chimney this year. Ten times easier than the window to install. I put some black foam board around it to hide the fireplace and keep any soot that is blown around inside it. Now the test will be this weekend when it hits 100 degrees.

    This may work for small air conditioners ( 5000 BTU ). I did mine today ( 12000 BTU ), it looked really good, I was proud of the look and the fit. Turned on the A/C and it ran for about 4 minutes then the compressor shut down. I went though this three more times, just not enough airflow to keep the compressor cool. Good luck to anyone that tries this, it didn’t work out for me. The A/C is back in the window.

    I forgot to mention that i live on the East coast and we get some very humid conditions so this heated vapor would contain quite a bit of moisture and so this is the reason for my concern of this heated exhaust reaching to the top of the flue in timely manner so the inside of the flue don't get excessive moisture build up and/or excessive heat build up around the air conditioner.

    I was wondering about the condensation that comes out of the back of the unit. I'm installing an LG LW1217ERSM (12k). Do I need to put a pan down under the installation? Does it make sense to pump out the water condensation from the pan with a siphon or something similar? Just for info - I'm in Pheonix. Summers are hot but not terribly humid till August.

    • @pyro8455
      @pyro8455  4 роки тому

      My condensation seemed to stay in the pan due to the heat going up the chimney. Evaporates quickly I assume!? Only time I noticed was when removing. Shoes got wet a couple times haha. After that just kept level removing. Put aluminum pan under if your concerned and see if you even get any build up? Good luck. Be Cool!

    My swamp cooler just died. I'm gonna try this until I get it replaced. Question: How does the plywood prevent the hot air from coming back into the room if it is just leaning up against the brick, or it just for looks? Was thinking of using 1-inch foam board and wedging inside for a better seal, and to dampen the sound.

    • @pyro8455
      @pyro8455  3 роки тому

      Hot exhaust air from AC rises. You could put fiberglass or some foam to seal. Up to you. Make sure your Damper is OPEN! Hot air goes right up the chimney.👍

    Thanks for creating the videos- watched them both. We've been thinking of doing the same so it was great that we found this post! Just an observation... Two points; If I were to do this I would insolate the inner side edge only (with sponge/batting, etc..) of the board so that it seals tightly against the uneven surface of the chimney (bricks). Secondly, I would've run the cable along the bottom of the board for a tighter fit. Also, and if aesthetics are a concern, maybe painting the extension cord to match the wood/brick, or buy an extension cord that's already a dark color would be a good idea. Thanks again.

    Won't this cause damage, huge issues to your fluke especially if you want to use it in winter? I imagine it's either AC use or Fireplace use, not both. Won't Soot start coming down and damaging the inside of your chimney due to the humidity inside the air coming out?

There is a key to the right side of the fireplace and if I want gas on, I turn the key then light the fire with a match. It is a real wood fireplace, not fake wood, so I can open the flue. Could I still put an AC in there? Or should I see if the Gas Co. could cap off that device? Thank you!
