I wrestle with the infamous Hardknott Pass, before checking into my digs for the evening. A lovely little B&B called Lacet House, right in the centre on Ambleside.

I used to keep my VFR on my in laws dairy farm in one of the sheds.
One of the access roads to the farm was a single tracker with grass down the middle. I had to swap from the left to the right to avoid a load of mud from a tractor, going across the grass in the middle.
I thought rather than having drive to the back wheel, I'd coast across the grass so it didn't bite and spin out.
Bad move, all I remember was sliding down the road on my arse watching the bike spin in circles past me on its left side. My A-stars gear and my HJC lid took the brunt and saved any big injury.
A re-spray for the fairing plus a new clutch lever, and a new gear selector took the damage over the £500 mark.
I approach and cross those grassed single trackers on a road bike now with max caution. Ride safe brother.

Where you stopped because of the land rover we had to stop to help two bikers who both dropped there bikes there last year ,very tricky road and never seen a video yet that does it justice to show just how steep it is

Hardknott and Wrynose. I'm very lucky to have them on my doorstep. You do see some sights with inexperienced drivers trying to pass the passes. It's a giggle sometimes and damn near dangerous at other times. It's a stunning part of Cumbria. Great video again Richy 👍
Great video again. I went up the Hardknott earlier this year and had a 4 wheel spin on one of those corners. The missus and kids weren't too impressed with me for taking them up there.
In North America when we ride in rain, cold and wind we call it adventure riding. In the UK, it’s just called riding.
As a national courier, In a van sadly this area is familiar especially the tiny roads.
I can remember one trip from just near London took me 30 miles north of Barnard Castle the sat nav said 1.5 hrs to destination. After 3 days sleeping in the van and looking forward to a pint back home I thought 1.5 hrs my arse. Then the roads became tiny with no margin for mistakes
Loved this and your willingness to allow others to exist on the road, we are all going somewhere lets make sure we all get there

I went up hardknott pass in winter. Conditions didnt help, but the quailty of road was bad.. Great video.. Plus to add i also wear a over suit over my Gore-Tex. helps alittle when stopping and not sitting in overall wet cloths
Try Rosedale, Chimney Bank, in North Yorkshire if you like steep hills 1in3 between Rosedale and Hutton-le-Hole, both very nice places. Not quite as long or as hard, but still challenging.
Hey Ritchy. A great video and I will be tuning in for the ride home. I admire your enthusiasm for the VFR. I've not long sold my 6th gen VFR which I had from new to buy a KTM SDR. I have to say I loved my VFR and they will always hold a special place in my heart but I'm not such a fan of the latest VFR. You can't beat the look of the under-seat exhaust providing an unhindered view of that beautiful single-sided swing arm or the gills in the side fairings. The halogen lights on the 6th gen were also faultless. I can't be convinced that the latest VFR looks as good as the 6th gen version.

Another good one Rich. My only gripe with my 14Vfr is the traction control. If the back slips or the front comes up at all it shuts the power down HARD! Be careful of that. I usually turn it off if I'm really gonna play.
First time I done Hard Knot was on a KH100 over 20 years ago. Get to the bottom instead of turning left turn right Duddon valley great road.

Thanks Richy, love the videos. Would highly recommend MCCruise. Here in Australia the distances are vast and this product is the answer for our VFR's and the later generation as well.. This is fully intergrated system and not a throttle lock. Quality product, not cheap, but in my opinion, absolutely worth the outlay. Keep safe, regards.
I'm proud of you Richy. Very courteous of you. I remember our digs in Port Erin where the owner said I could park the FJR in the rear yard. Well I parked it there just ONCE because it took me 10 mins to get it in and out because of the tightness but also because of the very slippery flags!

Ssh, don't tell Rich that generation is the best. Owned one and loved every second of it. The non VTEC, sounds better and pulls more smoothly from low. Bullet proof build plus its better looking imo.

cracking work again. I live in Newcastle and had to go to the Eskdale railway so the most direct route is the reverse of what you did. It was around 5 years back and January and we had a bit of snow. I got to Ambleside and they said the pass was open ! ok lower ground. The plough had cleared the road. My works van (VW Transporter) when we got higher up the drifts broke both my mirrors off it was that compact but I couldn't turn back ! it was like driving through a white tunnel ! what a muppet. my employers weren't too happy £800 bill still yet to do it on my GS
Enjoyed both the Lakes videos Richy and totally agree with you regards being an experienced rider/driver before tackling the Hardknot Pass.
And my Richa Cyclone suit got a real test on our weekend in the Far North of Scotland warm and dry at the end of the day.
There's a rode like that in N. Japan called Skyline. I lost my rear brake going down it one time...on a 250! It guess the goal shouldn't have been how fast I could descend that thang!

long day, but fantastic video mate, well done, very inspiring....Ive been up on the North Yorkshire moors today and it was a great day, plenty of sun and lots of bikes out, but only 120 miles completed!

A great video as usual. thanks RV. I've done Hard Knott pass once, when I was 17 driving my elder brothers Audi 100...must've been 1985 or 1986. It was tipping down with rain, the car was front wheel drive and automatic. I was driving my brother who was banned for speeding at the time. I can remember it was like being on a roller-coaster, only not as safe. One second all you can see is sky, then the next, you can't see it at all. Wheels spinning uphill and down. Luckily we only saw one, maybe two other cars the whole way. Defo no bikes. I've only been back riding bikes again the last couple of weeks (since the late 90's...have just got an F800GT to ease me back into riding. Partly due to your's and TMF's videos)...maybe I'll pick a nice warm sunny day to have a crack at it. Next summer.
Brilliant vid as always. Not done that pass yet. Will be on the bucket list for next year on my way up to Scotland.
As you were climbing the last section (12:44) the rear view looking back over your shoulders gives a good impression of how steep it is, but as you say it's definitely not for the novice. I’ve been over it a few times now and it still frightens the s**t out of me.

I’m lucky enough to live within half an hour of Ullswater 👍 and I’ve been over all the passes many times, but Hardknott is always an event! 😁When I was a kid (late 1960’s/early 1970’s) my Auntie Olive, who lived in East Anglia and had recently passed her driving test, came to stay with us. One day my Mum ‘made’ her drive over Hardknott Pass in our Morris Traveller. It was the last time she ever got behind the wheel of a car. Seriously 😂😂😂

Great video! I've conquered the hard knott pass twice with pillion, first on a VFR just like yours in the rain, then this year on a heavy loaded FJR two up ... glad I did it but... Never again!
Spent 3 days around the lake district a couple of years ago, love it up there, absolutely beautiful. Did the Hardknott pass, didn't find it that bad on the bike but was amazed at the amount of quite large minibuses going over the pass especially with those very steep very sharp corners. Personally felt safer on my bike than I would have in one of those minibuses. Re Irish weather, had the same thing, 4 days there, 3 beautiful, 1 whole day of monsoon, absolutely soaked. Over the years have come to the same conclusion with wet weather gear, will only buy Gore Tex now, can't beat it.
I did a 3 day Moors, Dales, Lakes, and Peaks mini tour last Thursday to Saturday, and like you I always do Hardknott .... crazy road ! the rear view gave a good perception of the angle the roads are at. While on my mini tour I went to Robin Hoods Bay, and ignored the dead end signs on the little main street eeeeeek, I reckon that must be close to as steep, turning my loaded GS800 at the top was fun with me little legs lol !!

Thanks RV, I really enjoyed that (and part 1). It looked amazing. I recently did a Cornwall loop, solo, and loved every bit of it. It's great to be out with your mates, but the odd solo ride is good for the soul👌

Nice - I did it on a BMW 1200RT a few yrs back as part of one of the best days biking I've one - rode up from the Cotswolds, and rode the Kirkstone, Wrynose and Hardknott passes, taking in the lovely little run around the Duddon valley.
Went with a mate, and we were parked up by lake Windermere when the wife rang my mobile to tell me that my tea would be out for 6pm - where are you she said.......Oh, just having an ice cream by a small body of water I said .......WHERE said she......Then I told here and had to hold the phone away from my ear as the reply was rather sharp!!
Eventually got home at 9.40pm having left home at 5.30am (met up with a mate nr Leicester and we rode up together - he had an 1150RT at the time.
A belter of a day out, and the slog up the M6 was soo worth it - By the end of the day i'd clocked up 543 miles for the day - superb!!

You can see the gradient more when you switch to the rear facing camera, and there's no ground below the back the bike in frame, at least it was for me
I've tackled Hard Knott on the push bike and those two bends just after you let the Land Rover through are absolutely brutal!!
Been over it several times in cars never on a bike. On the steep bits, where Landy was, on separate occassions have been forced to stop and restart. Once an old fellow in a fiesta in front lost momentum and ended up sticking it in the bank the second was a blonde in a 4x4 coming down who wouldn't give way!

Good 2 part video Richy. I drove the Hardknott pass a long time ago in a car witch was hair raising. Im the balance of Buying the VFR 800F at the moment I did own a 09 in the past.

Richy 12.47 that’s where one of our groups front wheel hit wet grass ( due to a car combing down the hill and wouldn’t give him any room) and the bike and rider ended up tumbling down the embankment thankfully no serious injuries and only cosmetic damage to the bike ( due to the ground being wet and v soft) I could only watch in horror from the lower part of the road.

I know it's been a bit over a year, so I haven't sure how things have changed, but you mentioned not having cruise control. Some people recommend grabbing one of those bits of plastic that snaps onto your throttle called a Crampbuster. Lets you just sit your hand down on it to hold the throttle instead of having to grip the whole time. Not sure what you think of it but figured I'd mention it! Cheers!
Street bike? Video tour of London. Might not be an idea if you're not up for all the filtering and whatnot, but it would be a pretty practical thing to see a street bike on the streets.

I've done Hardnott/Wrynose passes in both directions, east/west in my car and shat myself! Especially on the tight bits with numpty car drivers thinking they're in a TANK, passing you like Jeremy Clarkson on that death road in Bolivia.
Some of those uphill hairpins and unbelievably steep. I'll take my vfr up there... one day!

Done it for the time a few years ago on my fazer 1000 with my mate on his vfr 800 pre vtec, he dropped it on that really tight right hander. i pulled in further up and run back down to help him lift her back up . momentum took over me and i could hardly stop my insoles in my boots ended up rolled up at my toes . haha . well worth the effort though

Hi Rich another great video continue great work, I has test ridden the new VFR and yes they are great, little out my price range new but would like one maybe a couple of years old when a few good second hand ones hit the market, been up hardknott pass couple of times and as always GoPro never shows the real steepness of it and the hairpin bends. I've driven at least ten such inclines and descents in Norway in the middle of winter (and that's a proper Norwegian winter) in one 24 hour journey. The snow was falling constantly and drifting to over 2m! Not one road was closed. Only once did I have to wait for the snowplough to clear the way.
To be fair, in the UK there really aren't ANY roads or conditions to compare with that.
There's a technique to it. You probably need something like an old shape Volvo with a manual gearbox, lots of patience and very good concentration and attention to detail. Also, if your studded tyres are waiting for you at your destination 500 kms away, you also need to avoid the cops - because the fine for driving without studs or chains is MASSIVE!!
The last time I did that journey the (Peugeot) V6 engine had a blown water gasket, so to avoid pressurising the system and forcing water into the oil, I was running an open radiator, fed by an improvised topup tank with a windscreen washer motor attached. I was getting 50 miles between the system needing manually topping up from bottles - that I refilled from mountain streams.
Would I want to do it on a bike? Maybe a BMW F650 Strada with decent tyres, lots of warm gear and heated grips. Why not?

You should cycle the annual Fred Whitton Challenge 113 miles and 3,900m of climbing. I'm sure you could do it.
Hardknott is deffo on my to do list, should piss it up there on the explorer, your gloves didn't look to dry in that downpour tho Rich ? That feeling when you have got to the digs, had a shower and sit back while you wait for your food to arrive and reflect on a great days riding is priceless lol.
The gloves, boots and suit were all very wet. I however, was completely bone dry. That's Gore-Tex for you! ;-)
I did wonder if the gloves were GoreTex or not as they looked like short summer gloves
Rich be good to see you try a mini tour on an Africa Twin. Not your usual style bike but might be a great weapon of choice..
I agree though there is a BUT in my opinion. I've ridden one on a long trip.
It's a very capable all rounder the Twin.
Umfortunately it lacks performane. It's not a SPORTS tourer. For road work it doesn't put a smile on your face. It is great looking, comfy, go anywhere with the right rubber on, very reliable, I've not heard of any issues since it came out, but if you do loads of on road touring with luggage on it then expect to feel like its always under powered.
For the kind of riding Richy does, if he wants to tour practically and with fun then its gotta be something like the BMW XR/Ducati 1260 Multistrada. Either of these are a proper step up in all departments from the new VFR.

Interesting and entertaining. Ridden all those roads in the past 30 years, great memories. Should have called by for a coffee at the great Honister slate mine cafe. Bit of a tragic story about the former owner Mark Weir who crashed his helicopter near there.
Nice to hear a bike review with a bit of constructive criticism, no excuse for a touring bike in 2018 not to cruise control, it's even fitted to my daft MT10.

Another great video Richy, I was up Hardknott & Wrynose two weeks ago on a gorgeous sunny 21 degrees day with my wife and dog (in a car unfortunately) and we really enjoyed the stunning views etc. In a car you have to be careful and look out for other car drivers on those tight twisty stretches. A lovely part of the country. We stayed in Bentham in Yorkshire Dales and on a Sunday saw hundreds of bikers at the Devils Bridge just beside Kirkby Lonsdale. I wished I had been on the GTR! When are you going to get the Ireland trip launched? Really looking forward to seeing that. Best Mark

Just wanted to chime in about cruise control - I will not buy a bike that I might ride for longer than an hour on, without cruise control. Don't care how nice the bike … no cruise is a deal breaker. The Interceptor is supposed to be a sport tourer so it beats me why this feature is missing. I checked the bike out more than once in the showroom and loved the looks, fit and finish etc. but without the CC its not even worth a test ride for me. Still, I enjoy watching your Wildbad videos on your VFRs ...

Rich, a couple quick questions, if you have time:
- Your opinion on overall strength of the motor compared to your VFR...top-end, roll-on, VTEC hit, torque, etc
- Compared with your VFR...wind protection, bar vibration, seat comfort, mirrors, weight, brakes (still linked?)

Having ridden both these bikes plus the previous generation to Richy's bike I wouldn't swap them for the newer version.
No need because the new one doesn't do anything much better than the old ones.
Like I suggested to Richy recently, if your in the market to get a new sports tourer that improves on all the areas you were commenting on then something like a 1260cc Ducati Multistrada will hit the spot.

@@fensn6172 I'm well aware of both car and motorcycle manufacturers reputations built up over the years for their weaknesses in whatever areas.
Like you say Italian cars historicaly rot, and electrically are to be kind sketchy, but often have great engines from a drivers point of view.
These reputations still linger, and problems continue but are getting better.
Its a gamble for sure.
A Multistrada that works is an exciting and fun bike that makes a VFR feel dull (from a 1998 VFR owner).
Plus I thought the Multi would do what Mr Vida needs with ease and give him many more smiles per mile.
Pricey and perhaps unreliable, but great fun for a mile muncher.
Excellent video, cameras never really show the steepness of hardknot pass strange, the new vfr hasn't been a big seller for honda, but the more you rode it the more you liked it, I reckon they'll sell a few more now.
