  • Old Rag is cited by many as one of the best - and hardest - hikes in the eastern United States. The hike features over a mile of tricky scrambling across granite boulders that requires precise footwork, a level head, and lots of endurance. This 9.4-mile loop has become so popular that it requires a ticket to hike during peak season. Maria & I embarked on this hike over Memorial Day weekend in 2024, starting early to beat the heat and the crowds.
Shenandoah National Park protects a long and narrow swath of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia. The park contains a long ridge line that rises above the Shenandoah River valley to the west and the Virginia Piedmont to the east. Along Skyline Drive, which runs through the park, you can find dozens of overlooks of these valleys… thousands of feet below the park. Shenandoah is filled with forests, mountains, streams, waterfalls, meadows, and bountiful wildlife.
