- In part 10 of our Scamp Roadtrip we got to enjoy a great sunset in our last night at Shanendoah, woke up to a foggy/rainy forest and headed over to the mountains of West Virginia. We were spending the next 3 nights in Seneca Rocks West Virginia to do some hiking! ... #scamp #roadtrip #travelvlog

Very cozy. 🇨🇦
it is a super cozy little camper!
I'm from the area near Dolly Sods. All the roads are gravel, but the hiking and views are fantastic. There are books on the trails. Spent a lot of time there. There is also so much else to do there
I really wanted to do a hike there, but it just didn't work out that day. We enjoyed West Virginia so I am sure we will make our way back there soon
I live in VA and have driven the whole length of Sky Line Drive a few times. I've seen many deer, a black bear, and two of the strangest things I've seen on the road was a white Brahma bull, and a Black Panther, and no I was not drinking or doing drugs. :) No idea where they had come from. We reported what we had seen at the ranger station, and they told us other people had also seen them.
I will keep that in mind on my next backpacking trip 😳 its not just bears we have to look out for!
Great video. Nice and relaxing watching the sunset and listening to crickets and wildlife. Very relaxing. Toy could make one of those sleep videos. 😴 you know to help people relax to fall asleep. Keep up the great work. Have fun and be safe.
that was the best sunset of the trip- just awesome! a sleep video is an interesting idea! I actually do meditation videos on my other channel where I teach yoga: @Laura Goellner I didn't film any on this trip, but I usually like to try to film some outdoor scenes as they make great background sound for meditation videos
That's great to know. I will check out your other channel.
Very pretty area and the overlooks are beautiful. Sigurd Olson, who's quoted in the overlook with the deer, was one of the people instrumental in establishing the Boundary Waters in northern Minnesota. My 'kids' (they're all in their 30's) and I have ventured into the BWCAW annually for the last 7 years. It's truly a breathtaking wilderness area.
I didn't know that- very interesting! I would love to check out the Boundary Waters at some point
Lily, I echo the BWCAW comment. I'm from a little town called Northome and my wife is from Grand Rapids. Lake Superior shore drive from Duluth up is very scenic as well. :) SKOL Vikings. :)
Surprised to see another one already posted. Takes me a few days just to post pictures.
A few comments/observations/recommendations:
a. Tammie and I developed checklists when we bought our Tracer in 2014. We changed these a bit when we moved to our Grand Design. Tammie does all the inside prep (unpack/pack) and I do all the outside prep (leveling, carpets, yard stuff, lights, hoses, electric ect). When we are finished, especially when we hook back up, we double check each other. Familiarization with each other's checklist tasks is important in that process.
b. I never back up (Our GD 337 is 35' long) unless Tammie is standing behind (and to the side) of the camper after calling me on her phone. I have my phone synched to the Bluetooth system in the truck so I can hear and talk to her hands free. Keeps me from hitting things in the night. We have a very nice, wide beam flashlight for days we arrive after night.
c. I switched to the clear connections on the "Stinky Slinky" but went back to the white ones. Found out I have a weak stomach and "Seeing Things" wasn't the way to start my day of driving. :)
d. What is the Red Topped, White Bottomed looking thing you have on your side counter installed by the previous owner. Looks like a light perhaps?
Glad to see you working through a rainy day...............We don't wander far from our sticks and bricks home as we have full time jobs (and I run my own home inspection business) so days off are rare. We recently upgraded our thousand Trails membership to Elite, which allows us to stay 21 days at a time in a camp. We bounce between the TT camps close enough to our jobs so we can commute and still enjoy the camper as we continue to challenge living in it full time. Anyway, because we are so busy, a "Rain Day" is a bit of a blessing. Gives us both an excuse to just relax for a day other than to take our dogs (Thor - 4 year old Blue Heeler, Pippa - 8 year old Silky Yorkie, and Coco - 2 month old Red Healer) for trips to go outside for potty breaks.
I really like the idea of making lists to stay organized and make sure you don't forget something, especially when packing up that can prevent some unnecessary mistakes.
The first night we got to Elk Neck in the dark and figured out how important it is to have good lighting for backing into a space & how backing into a campsite at night can challenge a couple's communication skills! (especially for the new RV owner) but the 16 foot Scamp is not bad to handle, especially since Patrick has a CDL and trained on big rigs a few years ago. I will use the phone trick in the future though, as we have listened to other couples yell instructions back & forth when trying to park and it detracts from the camping experience for others.
Neither of us mind too much with emptying the tanks, perhaps because we both have jobs that require an extra strong stomach few things phase us in regards to bathroom habits anymore.
And I think the red/white thing you are asking about may be our rechargeable black diamond lamp - we moved that around the scamp for extra light as needed, especially when we didn't have electric hook ups at Loft Mountain. We get a lot of use out of that when camping.
I hear you on the struggle to find days off- Patrick & I both work 6 days a week most of the time and have almost always had opposite shifts so we make a point of going away 2x/year so we get some quality time together. It is challenging, but we make it happen! The Thousand Trails membership is interesting & that may be something that we look into in the future. It is great that you can enjoy your camper and still head into work each day- that must be fun!
Great video.. Nice countryside 😊
Thanks Irene! Virginia & West Virginia are beautiful- lots of mountains & farms
We love skyline took the pop up to big meadows campground . Scary twisty turny roads out there. Love the videos keep them coming....
Thanks Lacey! Big Meadows is a great campground- that is where I stayed a few years ago when I was camping with my dog, Flint. It is a great central location to get to some of the best hikes in the park... old stoney man, little devil stairs...I would like to go back and do those hikes again with Patrick & Redford in the future. I don't think I could ever get tired of Shenandoah
I am booked to take my family and our OPUS camper trailer to Big Meadows Campground in April. Any suggestions?
@@TraumaRNKen Enjoy take advantage of the amphitheater there .as well as go have lunch up in the lodge. The ranger station/ camp store there is great and the gift shop has a large area to look over the valley , relax and ask question. Also drive on up to skyland the highest point there only about 10 miles. We did it on horseback a few years ago. You can also go ride horses over the trails they have a place to do so. But it's just one horse follows the other type of thing . Have fun... And so so many trails to take ,old stoney man and old rag is my fav trails.
lacey stark thanks, I’ll check those things out!
@@TraumaRNKen bring warm clothes! when I was there in May it gets cold at night because of the elevation, but daytime was perfect for hiking. I really liked the little devil stairs and the white oak canyon hikes- but they can be challenging so see what your family is up to. there are also some shorter hikes to waterfalls and the Stoney Man hike is a great short hike to an awesome view- you will have a great time!
We live in Fl now but grew up in S.Jersey. I grew up in a small town off black horse pike if you were going from Philadelphia to AC.
I bet we have driven past it many times!- we live about 20 minutes from Atlantic City. Do you miss south jersey? we are looking to move in the next few years & hopefully south to warmer weather & a better location for outdoor adventures- It is great living here in the summer (except shore traffic, but we know how to avoid that) but the winter is just not for us!
Great video keep it up! Love the views...and love Patrick lmao
that Patrick...he is the best 💪
Great video. One thing I can add from living in Colorado and camping with a pop up camper, when coming down steep grades down shift your transmission one or two gears depending on the grade and speed. If your brakes overheat you could have a runaway vehicle.
Enjoying the videos.
Cheers from Colorado
we had been warned by others to watch the brakes and the transmission temperature so we were keeping an eye on that- it just is not very good timing to find out you need new brakes in the mountains of West Virginia, especially when we are so used to the flat roads of south jersey! Patrick did a great job managing the issue by down shifting (his CDL skills come in handy!) but then I couldn't drive because I have no idea how to do that- It is an important skill for drivers that are pulling anything because I think that saved us on this part of the trip!
Just an observation, while dumping tanks especially black tank. It's a good idea to put the lid of the dump station or some type of weight on your hose. Ask me how I know this! Lesson learned.
That is a very good point! Thanks Doug, as new RV owners we will take all the tips you have so we dont have to learn the hard way 😂😬
Wow!!! You’re from South Jersey!!! I’m from South Jersey!!! Glassboro New Jersey...Rowan University!!! Now I live in Yorktown Virginia!!! Awesome video!!! Thank you for sharing!!!👠🚌👠
yay south jersey! although we are looking to move soon 😂 seems to be a pattern I see with most people from New Jersey- they are trying to leave! do you like living in Virginia?
Love your videos and adventures, hopefully gonna get a Casita soon but for now I trudge up mountains to take in the sunrises and sunsets. Being a fifty-one year old man I’ve come to the conclusion these are some of life’s greatest treasures. Missing Redford
a Casita would be a great base camp for adventures! It makes it more enjoyable climbing up those mountains when you know there is a nice bed and shower waiting for you. - but it is always worth it- some of my favorite memories are from camping & hiking trips. We missed Redford too- he will be back in the next series
great job on the video
Thank You Amy Jo! we loved West Virginia & will be back soon
nice job on the video and you hit some real sweet spots, but one thing is missing and that's Redford :(
thanks Sue, I know we missed Redford too! He was being a spoiled granddog while we were traveling, but he will be in the next series of camping videos
I'm from Elkton Virginia, I like to ride my motorcycle up there. Nice video
I could see this would be a great place for a ride! the couple next to us had a tow hauler with 2 motorcycles & they went for rides every day. If we ever get rid of the Scamp that might be our upgrade!
We love Shenandoah NP have been there a few times, love to camp in September all the crowds go away makes it much more enjoyable. You made a comment about closing your roof vents because of the rain, I would recommend getting a roof vent cover they are very easy to install and then you can leave your vent open in the rain, not so important in September but in the summer the roof vents are very important for getting the heat out, especially since you have a dog.
that is good to know! I will add that to our list of Scamp improvements for next season, Thanks!
You have to watch out for Jeep power these days, as some of them have Fiat engines.
we hope the jeep lasts for a while as we really like it- it is the nicest vehicle either of us have ever owned (by far). As soon as we got home we had the brakes done and now all is well with the jeep
@@LetNewAdventuresBegin I had an old Wrangler. Even with that big six it was no good for towing.
@@larrykramer6057 they really are not ideal for towing, which I feel like is so strange for a vehicle that is branded as being for "adventure", same thing with Subaru - it is an "outdoorsy" vehicle but can't tow much of anything
Hi, I just took a ss of the second sunset, can I use as a profile pic on FB if I give you credit Laura?
sure, glad you like it that much!😁
what vehicle do u guys use for the scamp?
It is a V6 Jeep Cherokee
what is the towing capacity for it?
V6 Jeep Cherokee
@@makaylaharper214 It is about 1700 lbs so we are getting close to tow capacity when the scamp is loaded- but we don't travel with full tanks & we are getting sway bars in the spring so that will help
@@LetNewAdventuresBegin I have read that Scamp 16 Standards weigh about 2400 lbs (without water). I'm surprised you are towing above capacity, but it looks like your Jeep is going up the mountains no problem. :) I am enjoying your adventures!
Saw your $164/3 night bill. Would like to see more bills/discussion of costs.
yes that is our plan because knowing the cost is important- I actually kept a running tab of our spending on this trip for campsites, gas & food so I will put that in the last video in this series. This was a double site so it was more expensive, but it was the last one open so we took it
@@LetNewAdventuresBegin You explain things so well.
@@larrykramer6057 Thanks Larry- I like these videos to be helpful to others that would like to travel
W egg ll people you mice srt up eoththe schamp not takes money enjoy thepitdoor good times
Maris
thanks Maria
Love your videos but can't hear much of what your husband says. Your voice is loud and his is not understood at all. Maybe he could stand closer to you?
I know, we tend to use a pretty minimalist filming set up (no external mic) for ease of use, but that makes it challenging to get good audio. I have to remind Patrick to get closer to the camera so it picks up better, thanks for watching anyway! 😁 we learn something new each time we film a trip
