  • Shenandoah National Park: Today on Rock the Park, we tackle Shenandoah’s most dangerous trail scrambling over billion-year-old boulders and scaling cliffs. Getting around Shenandoah National Park is scenic and easy thanks to Skyline Drive - the 105 mile highway that cuts right through the middle of the park. Shenandoah National Park is in Virginia and it’s full of jagged cliffs that make for some epic rock climbing. The park is located 75 miles southwest of Washington DC. Out of 500 miles of trails in Shenandoah, dogs are allowed on 96% of them.
For our first stop, we go hiking in Hawksbill Peak which is the tallest peak in the park. Shenandoah is also a great place for some serious rock climbing, but we test our skills later on in the episode.
We’re actually hiking on part of the Appalachian trail here in Shenandoah. The Appalachian trail extends 2178 miles from Georgia and all the way up to Maine. 101 miles of the trail goes through Shenandoah.
Next day, we head to Old Rag Trail which is infamous for its unpredictable weather, ragged rocky terrain and the fact that climbers need to slide, shimmy, and crawl their way across and around giant granite boulders. We have to climb about 2,260 feet of elevation. Scrambling over boulders at these heights requires concentration and careful maneuvering.

Love seeing Swisher get buckled in! Dog car safety needs to be more mainstream. Thank you for doing your bit to make it so.

finally shenandoah the only natl park i've really been too
i was actually on hawksbill peak not too long ago, it was my first real mountain climb. I took a more difficult route, the lower hawksbill trail, it was not as long but much steeper. The view was spectacular and for not travelling in over 5 months it was really satisfying to have done this. This is also my first time hiking a mountain.
I hope in the future I will get to do some rock climbing in the park, most likely not as difficult as in the video but still something.

    Nice job.
Maybe sometime you could visit Adirondack State Park in NY. 6.2 million acres. Largest in lower 48. Larger than Yellowstone, Yosemite, Glacier combined. Wicked beauty, rugged and gnarly. You name it, they have it there.

I did the Old Rag hike...it is really tough if you do it from the trailhead all the way to the fire-road. You scramble to many points of no return, where there is no safely going back...only forward.

How long (by minimum day count, or by range of days) would you advise staying in Shenandoah National Park for if you wanted to explore all the major areas of the park?
