- In this moving video,Tempy Pattinson,5½, from Darlington, talks to war veteran Simon Brown, (38½!), after her wish to meet a ‘real-life’ soldier was granted by Help for Heroes.
Si, from Morley in West Yorkshire, is one of at least 66,000 ex-military personnel with life-changing injuries and illnesses in the UK. When the two sat down together to share their stories, they discovered they had very different ideas of what makes someone a hero. "Tiny" Tempy told Si she had swum 100 metres and completed a triathlon in a bid to give something back to the heroic soldiers who put themselves in danger to keep her safe.
But Si, who lost 80 per cent of his sight and had 25 operations to rebuild his shattered face after he was shot in Iraq, told Tempy it was supporters like her who were the real Heroes.
In this extraordinary film, Si and Tempy show what it is that makes the bond between Help for Heroes and its supporters so special.

I am a 69 year old disabled American veteran.
This has me in tears.
We carry our scars both on our bodies and in our minds.
It is a hard life. Not a lot of fun at times. When children like this young girl, treat us with such respect and care it floors us. I was once eating my dinner in a restaurant. A few tables away there was a family eating their dinner. Father, Mother, Grandmother and 8 children. Ranging in age from 6 to 16.
At the end of there meal before they left. The 3 adults stopped by my table and thanked me for my service.
It was nice, then each of the children & the teenager standing in a line each came and thanked me too.
I was handling it ok till the littlest girl came to me and said thank you sir for protecting us, can I please hug you. As the tears ran down my face, she took a napkin and wiped the tears from my eyes and said. Its OK, I cry too, I understand. I love you.
Children are amazing.

@@thewaywardpoet You are most welcome. I spent near 20 years after being hurt pretty much being ignored. Somewhere at sometime the attitudes in America towards it soldiers changed for the better.
People started thanking me for my service, going out of their way to come to me. It was and is Very powerful emotionally for me each and every time. I go out to eat in a restaurant and when I go to pay, the waitress tells me that someone has already paid for my meal.
It is deeply touching.
To be honored.
By regular everyday people.
To be given that kind of respect is just an Awesome feeling.
I find myself thinking about my fellow soldiers who did not survive.
I remember their faces, who they were to me, what they meant to me.
In my heart of hearts, I think,
This is for all of You.

It’s even more amazing when you know that this man has spent the years since he got injured worried about interacting with children for fear of scaring them. Instead of being scared, the first child he really got close to since his injury looked him straight in the face and declared him her hero.

With the war in Ukraine, I really appreciate the works of brave soldiers, both in my country and abroad. Putting your life at the stake for others to live, wow, how else can you define a hero. Like the nurses and doctors in the face of the pandemic, my highest respect to you.
The world is not in trouble with kids like Tempy running it.

Simon Brown is an absolute bad ass, shot in the facew on a rescue mission he realised that his palate had collapsed and would choke him so he stuck his thumb in his mouth and held it out of the way so he could breath and ultimately survive.
According to his COs report "Simon was smiling when he was shot and still smiling when he passed out" a legend.....
As for Tempy, wella HUGE shout out to her parents, what a well spoken, delightful girl I have to admit I;m in pieces as I write this.

Tempy has become my hero now too. I have a 3 year old daughter just now (she's 4 in a few months), and we're thoroughly proud that she's just starting to be able to swim now, so a little girl her age swimming 100 lengths is absolutely astonishing! And let's be honest, Tempy is absolutely adoreable. She's so cute! Her parents must be so very, very proud of their little angel.

What a little gem this child is. Her parents deserve to be very proud of the values they've taught her. So sad that the soldier is afraid of scaring children we should all be teaching our children about diversity, and injury, and disability and acceptance.
