I was on the team back in the early 80's and our dressing room was metal lockers with a wooden bench running the length of a wall. I find it very, very sad to see that this is what it takes today to get a lot of players to attend Texas. Back in the day we came to Texas because, we wanted to be Longhorns. We wanted to represent The Flagship University of Texas. There was no glitter and glitz.

other than that they do get paid monthly. So there is that.....about 3k a month sometimes. I don't feel sorry at all. Free housing, free food, free clothes, free travel, free education. The education alone is 80k. So no they should not get paid because someone else donated their hard earned money for those facilities.
The facilities are utilized daily by the players. Other than padding their pockets, it went directly to the players.

Arguably the most pampered team in CFB went 7-5 this year. I know Charlie Strong had his faults, but I heard he immediately cut back on some perks and told them they had to earn them back.
...at least Oregon won the pac-12.
They went 8-5 but the team was decimated with injuries this season. Talking most of the DBs, almost all of the RBs, one of the leading WR, defensive linemen. Hell most of the starting players were 3rd or 4th string players this season.

MEANWHILE, THEY KEEP SPIKING UP TUITIONS FOR THEIR COLLEGE STUDENTS AND LEAVING THEM DEEP IN DEBT WITH STUDENT LOANS. THIS IS DISGUSTING THE AMOUNT OF MONEY SPENT ON A COLLEGE SPORT.
The football program at The University of Texas is not an expense to the university. Quite to the contrary....it is a revenue machine. Last year the football program generated $133 Million with $87 Million in profits. While some of the profit goes back into the football program, the profits also help other athletic programs (required by law, often at a loss to universities across the nation) a significant amount of the money goes back into the university for scholarships or whatever else the university deems is needed. With respect to tuition and fees, it is $10,398 per year at UT. That number represents a 3% increase over the last year which is hardly a "spike" in tuition. With the CPI being 2.3% this only leaves the university with a small margin for error in just keeping up with the CPI. The "disgusting amount of money spent" is a fallacy, an urban myth. In fact, the program is fully self supporting and then-some. Now, if the school was losing money on the football program, say like Army for example, OK, I would agree with you. It's simply not the case here. To your point on student debt: UT, not unlike many large R1 institutions, facilitates grants and financial aid to a full 64% of their students....these are not loans. Those not receiving grants or financial aid either didn't apply or have been determined by the university to not have an actual need (say a wealthy family). In those cases, the expected family contribution (EFC) is much higher. By the way, Texas has been generating tens of $millions from the football program for many years. To that end, many who do not play football have benefited from the investment in the football program.
