    I used those adapters to convert a pair of SPD-SL road shoes to gravel shoes by sanding the platforms down to match the curvature of the sole and installed the included cleat nuts inside the shoe.

    I was recently "persuaded" to change my road bike from spd to Look pedals: hate it! But along with the Look pedals & cleats I bought a beautiful pair of much-too-expensive leather Lake carbon soled road shoes (you sound like a man who would understand). Can't justify not using them, at least for a season or two, so thinking of trying these spd adapters. Your video has helped me realise that I am even more confused than I thought I was :) Love the T-shirt!

    very useful video! thank you for the warnings, although I was expecting something worse, tbh. I recently saw the light with respect to cleat positioning and moved the cleats in all of my shoes (road and mtb/gravel) as far back as I could. One of the road pairs, however, has fixed bolt holes and the difference in cleat position to all my other shoes is very noticeable, to the point where I feel crouched and uncomfortable on the bike compared to the others (ignorance can be bliss, I guess!).
    Ergo (no pun intended), I am thinking about hacking that pair into "gravel" shoes with these adapters. For sure I will not be taking them off-road, but they may work just fine for road rides on my gravel bike, as my road bike has been pretty much confined to the home trainer lately.

    I'm still using my 3-year-old (and ugly) Scott MTB shoes on my road bike with Crankbrothers Candy pedals. I bought a pair of Fizik X1 Infinitos last summer, looking slick, but I still have to adjust the cleats, it's been almost A YEAR now. I failed to exactly replicate the position as I didn't have a turbo back then, so it was extremely time consuming. Then winter (erm, rain?) happened and I returned to using Scotts. I was hoping to achieve that during the lockdown (I'm in the UK) but I still couldn't get around to it...

    Imo the SPD shoes can vary how they interface with SPD pedals and feel not as planted. I bought S-Works Recon last year and they feel same as my Sub6 with road pedals. Really tight, no rocking, just some float. Sole sits much closer to pedal body than Giro Empire VR90 on XTR pedals.

    Are there any MTB SPD style pedals that offer a larger platform for push on? I’ve been somehwat reluctant to get SPD pedals for this reason, and because sometimes I just want to commute around town in flat shoes (now I use Pearl iZumi flat shoes w/ Wellgo platform pedals).

    You can get the shoes drilled to get to fit the spd paddle. Alex dowsett had done this to fit his speedplay paddels. He has a video about this on his UA-cam channel.

    • @ridesofjapan
      @ridesofjapan  4 роки тому +1

      Pieter Ullersma that’s true you could, but you need to have the tread on the side to rest agains the pedal on a spd system, so it wouldn’t work very well with just a cleat.

    • @nikveldkamp8630
      @nikveldkamp8630 4 роки тому +2

      @@ridesofjapan I ride Speedplay SYZR, and what I get from the manufacturer is that due to the different locking mechanism I would not depend on the tread to ride, only to let the cleats live longer when I walk on hard ground. Lots of adjustable float to safe my knee joints.
      I haven't watched Alex Dowsett's video yet, but I assume he was talking about out the 4 bolt pattern for the Speedplay road pedals ( think he mentioned it on gcn). I could imagine that having drilled an SPD slot in afterwards could be quite a tricky thing to do do while trying to keep the contact point structurally stable.

      @jpm600 4 роки тому +1

      @@ridesofjapan I have a cheap-ish road bike shoe with both 3 bolt and 2 bolt spd pattern and I use spd cleats for road-ish rides on my gravel bike. First few times, it wasn't completely natural to clip in without tread around it, but now it feels normal-ish.
      Road Bike kit, 32mm road tyres and gravel tracks on the way the way to/from the group road ride is awesome in all ways....

They are cheaper and lighter than the XTR even though it's only one-side clip, but have a bigger platform like the spd-sl. I believe we have passed each other a few times on the Arakawa, and I might be interested in the Xpedo M-Force 8 Ti pedals if you don't want them.

      Must have been a while ago then as I moved up to Saitama a few years ago ;)
      If you’re interested in the pedals shoot me a DM on Instagram if you can 👍

      G K. Definitely try before you buy (like all shoes) they been breaking in good for me, no problems in today’s 90km indoor session.

    Never thought the SPD system would only be 20 grams heavier than speed play!

    "Not" crazy 😂 i will change to mtb clibs when my roadshoes die.

    Have you tried the exustar titanium pedals? It may be the best all around.

    With the speedplay's, lose the walkable cleat covers, get 4 hole shoes (even lower stack height) and you can lose the 3 to 4 hole adapterplate. Then weigh again ;).

    • @ridesofjapan
      @ridesofjapan  4 роки тому +3

      Not a single 4-hole shoe out there that fit my taste though 😜

    Had to laugh when the dura-ace box came into frame. Just buying the top of the line pedals as a panic buy hahaha. You never know...

    Crank Bros have good road shoe adapters, but for Crank Bros (not spd) pedals. I have Crank Bros Candy and Egg Beater pedals with both MTB and road shoes

    Check out the system weight of speedplay Ti frogs. Pedals and cleats 256 grams. I use them with the same Shimano RX 8 shoes. They spin super smooth and getting out is the easiest of any clipless I have used.

      Sorry!!! DO NOT check out the Ti Frogs. You already have several great pedals already. And the oil slick finish on the Frog Ti spinal is so 1990. Looks just as sweet in 2020.

    I'v actually been quite happy with the adapters. I have them on fizik infinito r1 and mavic wintershoes. The heel rubber is maybe a bit minimal on the pearl izumi's and does not really help for stability.

    • @ridesofjapan
      @ridesofjapan  4 роки тому +1

      I think your right about the heal issue.
      No durability issues for you then?

      @@ridesofjapan The mounting was a bit weird as I was unable to get them tight enough initially, but using carbon paste between the metal part and your sole helps a lot to get the play out. At least in my case. The rubber thread walks off with time as you can imagine, but they're not too bad.
      Having a lightweight hybrid shoe with SPD mount and very minimal thread + stiff carbon sole yet has to be released though

    Spd adapters are not something that interests me, but i watched the video anyway. Theres always some good information in your videos. Such as dura ace been lighter than speedplay. Now i know i will stick with shimano.thanks.

    I like the looks of that digital scale. Link? (Also how much does it weigh?)

    • @ridesofjapan
      @ridesofjapan  4 роки тому +2

      Just something cheap of amazon that did .1 of a gram, I just taped a pink piece of paper to the top since it was too reflective (silver).
      Can't seem to find it now though... and I guess I need to get another scale to weigh it 🤪
