Next year I'll be 70. My parents always camped, and back then it was a tent, a Coleman stove, lantern, and a big ice chest with a block of ice you'd buy on the way out of town.
We had a ball camping all over Oklahoma on the weekends, and take week long trips to New Mexico, Colorado, and up to Wyoming in a 1959 chevy.
In 1963 dad bought a chevy truck and built a camper shell for the back we used until 1966 when he bought a brand new cabover camper for the back of his truck. I was 11yrs old and thought that was the coolest thing there was.
No air conditioning, a 2 burner stove, a sink with a hand pump for water, and a built in ice box with a shelf for the block of ice.
6 years later he bought a bigger nicer cabover.
These were the glory days of camping and the start of the RV industry. To bad it will never be like that again.
Too many people, too many rules, too commercialized now.
Its no longer camping, people drive or pull their living rooms, kitchens and bedrooms and tell people they went camping....bull shit. They've managed to destroy everything that made it so special.

Yeah it’s a hole snobs who go glamping. They pay for RVS what many pay for homes. I want to stay away from people, not watch them brush their teeth to upload to UA-cam. Lovers of self in these end days.

    • @SuperSushidog
      @SuperSushidog 7 годин тому

Though we've camped in a similar manner for decades, we don't camp anymore. We live this way full time, but you would never know it to look at us. Yes, we have a motorhome with all the creature comforts of home - because we are home. We are totally self-contained, with slide-outs, 24/7 off-grid air conditioning, etc. but it's powered by the sun, so there's no noisy, stinky generator or blaring radio to interfere with anyone else's enjoyment of the wilderness experience. And in 2 weeks we'll be gone, leaving no trace that we were ever there, except for maybe some tire tracks. It's the homeless who don't live this way by choice who give no thought to others. They spread their junk out like they own the place and stay for a month or more till they get thrown out, leaving broken bottles, cans in the fire pit and overflowing garbage bags behind that give us responsible, considerate RVers a bad name.

If anyone has been BLM camping, you’ll know that they get a lot of use and unfortunately abuse. I know from the Off-road world, BLM is constantly having to close trails because of overuse and abuse. So my guess is these price hikes are penalizing the majority for the sins of the minority.

BLM camping is still cheap if you can handle no hookups. Heck, in Florida private parks run $70-$100 per night. Weekly discounts high. Even at those prices booking 1 year in advance is advised, you might get a site 6 months in advance.
Higher BLM camping fees might cut down the crowds and restore the wilderness experience. I wonder if some of the price increase is due to the need to clean up all the trash left by campers.

  • @BootsandJeansRiders
    @BootsandJeansRiders 23 дні тому +15

Remember they are talking about paid BLM campgrounds, and yes some of those hikes are extreme. However, 90% of campers use BLM because of the free camping. And... even in the free BLM sites, trash has become an issue. So don't be surprised when they start charging at the "free" site next year. IJS.

This will be yet another factor in the price of RVS. It’s easy to see that camping is becoming a playground for the rich and if you don’t fall into this category then you’re not going to be able to park your RV anywhere decent without paying the price as you would in a private park.
What happens to all the people who live in RVS and homeschool their children. It’s going to increase homelessness just because the state has figured out that they can create more income. It’s sheer greed unless they are using the extra money to upgrade their parks and add facilities etc.
With the ever increasing cost of camping and the purchase price of RVS that come with issues that require fixing it’s not difficult to see why so many Americans are buying homes in Italy and the south of France. You can rent your property while you’re not there and pay off your mortgage within 4 years. All flights are tax deductible as you can register as a business. All running costs are deductible whereas you can keep pouring money into an RV. America really is being short sighted as they are killing the industry forever in my humble opinion.

It amazes me that the BLM and Army Corp of Engineers have been able to keep prices so affordable for so long. I think alot more people are using the resources and it's costing more to maintain. One of the best ways to keep this affordable is leave as nice as you found it or improve it while you are there (pick up after someone else).

Judging by the condition many of the campsites are being left in (broken glass, hardware stores worth of rusty nails n screws in and around fire pits, human and dog waste, etc. I am not surprised.
I was at a beautiful waterfront camping - 14 days free dispersed in TN. They had a huge dumpster plus bear proof garbage cans. Sadly, f'ng lazy people literally left mattresses, dirty disposable diapers in and around the water, plastic , glass, broken kids toys - you name it in the sites directly across from the dumpster!
It is horrifying that humans don't realize our little blue space ship is all we have, and if we don't take care of it, there is no place else to go.
Add, the number of people out here now, they need more resources to maintain these millions of acres.
Maybe if they had people at least register their vehicles and got a yearly pass to put on windshield of main vehicle (like the LTVA passes).
Inconsiderate People are ruining it for everyone.
Add the fire danger in the western states, having to go in and look for stragglers before doing controlled burns, or, god forbid, out of control burns....
It would probably be more cost effective to put dumpsters/recycling bins at entrance of some of the super popular dispersed areas. I would pray that it may help reduce the crap dumped. Imo. Hopefully they will still offer old people discounts 🤣

The field office in St. George, Utah, notes these facts about the use of this popular site, which includes both a campground and day-use area. Some 14,760 visitors use the site each year.
Fee revenues only partially cover expenses, and “will not cover future infrastructure replacement needs.” Fees haven’t changed since 1998.
Here’s the proposal for fee changes.
Individual sites would increase from $8 to $22 per night

I used to go solo camping in the BLM and federal forest areas all along the west coast. As an Army vet it helped me to get back in touch with nature having had enough of it during deployment's. The Army made me hate camping. lol Three things caused me to stop. Trash and huge 4x4s with sketchy locals. The trash included spent shells and bottles and cans left over from drinking. It also includes more and more homeless activity and human waste. The conservative plan to defund agencies cuts needed resources to maintain let alone upgrade anything. People like to complain about taxes or fees and then complain when there is noone to fix anything. We could use some enforcement of basic laws including homeless camps. Disabling our government financially has taken away something us veterans have literally fought for, the homeland. Quit complaining about the price of fees or taxes for things but if you do know of a government worker who is doing something sketchy or illegal, either report it or stfu. There will always be that one person or people in government or the private workforce who will try to ruin it for everyone. Why let them?

I generally support the trend of increasing the prices of high-demand government-run campgrounds. Put simply, many are way too inexpensive, and the demand has increased. Take any of those sites you mentioned and look at the percentage increase of the demand compared with the proposed percentage increase in the price. I will guarantee you if the price increase was 300% the demand increase is probably 3000%, no exaggeration. The BLM used to manage lands that literally might not see more than a handful of visitors a year. But with the advent of Boondocking thanks in part to ahem, UA-camrs who never shut up about it, these places have become genuinely overrun in some cases. The BLM was never conceived to manage such a place. Furthermore, the price increases will help to reduce the demand somewhat, a very good thing. Similar moves would be very welcome in many state and national parks, where the campsites are often laughably cheap for what you’re getting. I’ve seen lakefront sites in Montana or Washington state parks that are 28 a night. The demand for such a site is basically infinite, so of course these places see overwhelming use. Something has to give. And finally, these BLM sites are often used hard and put away wet by the disgusting humans that tend to visit them. Covered in trash, shit, graffiti, and subject to physical damage. They’ve got to be policed and overseen and that costs money. Bottom line: this is a good thing.

Over our past decade of camping, we have seen campsites become more popular and more abused, torn up and simply not taken care of by campers. Simply put, eight to fourteen dollars a night was way cheaper than any commercial park. At Smoky Mountain Natl Park, parking was free (and free parking entrance), but after charging a $5 parking fee, the park has raised millions - and infrastructure improvements have already begun. I will support these fee hikes and camp there. We need to take care of our parks - that cost $$$$.

Great video, THX. I understand that pricing on everything is going up and has always gone up and I know I can't buy a loaf a bread for 25 cents like I use to in the 50's. But these park price increases should have happened in small increments over time. We are both in our 70's & 80's and have been RVing for 24 years. At this point we just don't know how much longer we can continue to enjoy our RV (5th Wheel) physically and now financially. Most of us are burden with RV payments, insurance, maintenance, gas and now the cost at parks are going up. This might be our last year of RVing. : (

It would be a shame if the tax folk came around and said you land is worth $100,000 an acre (for tax purposes, not that you could sell it for anywhere near that) and present you with a 5 figure a year tax bill, like they did us. We live in a 25 yr. old motorhome now, mostly on government land with no property tax bill and couldn't be happier. We're in an RV park now, on the East Coast, visiting family, where boondocking places are rare, paying $100 a month for a no-hook-up campsite, which is much cheaper than these ridiculous public land rate increases. If they can let us stay for $3.33/day, (and presumably make a small profit) why can't the government do so on public land? Increased costs are never fun, especially when those costs affect you directly, but it is evident the growing popularity of RVing and camping have resulted in reduced availability and increased degradation of camping spaces. Either way, the prices had to rise: the typical capitalistic response to increased demand and limited supply is the price increase; the higher cost of maintaining and repairing heavily-used campgrounds warrant price increases. Hopefully, more of us leave no trace and take care of our beautiful country so all can enjoy. Safe travels, everyone!👍🏽

After the civil war Lincoln actually had the homestead act which I suggest once Donald Trump takes office again should do the same and give all the land to the people. Would suck as far as federal and state parks but I'm sure there could be a work around but government should have no say in land and how it's used.

The problem is, it’s never enough. We started camping in a pickup in 1969. VA state parks were $1 per night memorial-labor day, free the other 9 months. There was no charge for day use like fishing, hiking, etc. Now it’s $7 a day to just ride in weekdays, $10 on weekends. We used to be able to cut dead wood for firewood, now you can’t bring your own wood, and it’s probably $1 per stick of wood. It gets better. The firewood is cut, split and stacked by a volunteer group called friends of Pocahontas park. So the use free labor for the wood, and literally make thousands on the wood. Oh, now it’s $35 a night. And please no comments about tgey have to pay workers. These parks were built by the CCC’s during the depression by our tax dollars. We pay income state tax in Virginia of 5%. I’ve seen the statistics and just one state park in VA beach gets over a MILLION VISITORS per year. At its base, that’s $35,000,000 in just camping fees for one park. Our local park gets 1,250,000 visitors per year. They also sell stuff at the camp stores, rent boats, kayaks, have paid concerts, etc. I guarantee the revenue from one park, pays to run them all, but the state takes all the profits and puts them back into the general fund for the state. If the fees went into the state park coffers, I guartgey could cut costs by 75% and break even. These parks were built with tax money and should be priced for all to enjoy. Especially for VA residents that already pay state taxes. Not a rant but just frustrating. After age 62, thankfully Federal campgrounds are $14 a night. I’m sure the wave of people living in cars, trucks, vans, campers on the BLM land is behind this great surge in prices. They were probably designed for occasional recreational use, not full time living, wear and tear, and unfortunately abused by the same people. Not what I expected in retirement, thanks
