I think this is one of the better Janowitz recordings: her voice is less tight and rigid than usual, and in some of the lyric passages her breath support is actually working. Also, her pitch is better than usual. On the other hand, it has to be said that she is very much at her limit in the final part, and that most of her high notes are screams without vibrato or support.
@@henrygingercat She is held in such high esteem because she really is very, VERY good. All the bad things in this performance that have been pointed out... are the exception, not the norm. She is clearly forcing, because this repertoire is much too heavy for her. Her voice is lyric, not dramatic. But when she sings Strauss and Mozart....it's hard to top her performances. And I'm saying this as someone who is *not* a particular fan of hers!! Her long, silky, smooth legato lines are to die for. Her singing is supported on the breath the vast majority of the time. And I don't understand the statement being made about her pitch. She has a very tight-knit vibrato, and her pitch is usually spot on.
@@tristanhnl But nobody pointed a gun at her and insisted she sing the part. And she's often almost as strained on the high notes in Mozart and Strauss.
@@henrygingercat , and nobody said somebody pointed a gun to her head. Just saying, the repertoire was too heavy for her. And I disagree, she is not strained in Mozart and Strauss. She has a naturally thin-bodied voice. So it's natural as she goes higher and higher, the sound will be focused. That's just the nature of her instrument.
ihre klare reine Stimme spricht Bände! So schön!!!!
Janowitz: the best Leonora-Fidelio ever! Her performance is simply perfect.

I totally agree - screaming, strained top notes and a weak lower register - I've never understood why she is held in such high esteem.

The lyric passages are lovely, but she she is in trouble in the dramatic passages, and the high B naturals are fierce
Thank heavens, a word of sense. Very overrated in my opinion.
Gundula Janowitz - few could ever match the truthfulness of the emotion she shares as Leonore, let alone her beautiful voice and musicality.
perfection
I'm looking desperately for the whole "film" - Do you have it?
Yes
@@AlexanderSulzberger Oh is there a possibility to watch the whole film?
