For any band really, i went to go see them when they were opening for brockhampton (i came for gecs btw) and the group of people in front of me were extremely obnoxious in expressing their distaste, one guy kept saying "lets just go outside for a smoke" and another kept saying "this isn't even music, bro"
Having a hyperpop act open for a metal band is a risky move. Metalheads have this weird mentality that any music that isn’t metal ain’t shit. I’m not surprised they reacted to 100 Gecs the way they did, they’d do it to anyone that wasn’t playing their exact type of music.
I agree, and to be honest it didn't pay back. A 90's band with lot of alternative rock and nü metal fans and you choose a hyperpop act as opener, you also have to expect not everyone it's going to agree. If If I don't like the music they're playing I don't have to dance or enjoy it. It's not the audience fault, it was a logistics problem, they have to understand their target audicience
@@Flippylover_69this is so true. My mom is a huge metalhead (and for context I listen to many genres, but I really love indie and folk music) and she's constantly telling me how much my fav music sucks and it "literally makes her want to vomit". It's like they're incapable of listening to any other genres lmao
I am a 100 Gecs lover and my friend went to the London show. Apparently was great. I went to a Dorian concert and, looking at twitter afterwards, it was just people NOT AT THE CONCERT making fun of how we were all dressed. Crazy good fun though!
@@t3rrible-t33f Don't worry I thought it was super funny. Venue was just in the middle of a city so loads of strangers were walking past and posting the queue to get in!!
@@Gumbyloomy I'm deciding whether I travel for London for one of the fanfare shows. I promise you it was the best concert I've been to! Everyone knew WHAT WAS UP AT A DORIAN SHOW!!
lol i went to a concert that had 100 gecs open before they blew up and everyone in the crowd has booing and leaving the floor. at one point laura screamed “YOU GUYS HATE US:)” and everyone screamed back “YES:(“ i love 100 gecs now
it was fucked up how much brockhampton fans hated on dylan and laura when brockhampton is obviously inspired by them and members of the group collaborated with them lol
@@dyllwill kevin abstract was featured on dylan brady’s first album and dom mclennon was the bh member who was always posting and sharing their music. first 100 gecs EP came out in 2017, brockhampton’s first mixtape came out in 2016. yes there is alivesinceforever and the previous incarnations of BH, but they started around the same time and were always fucking with each other. they both love high pitched vocals
Came to comment the same thing, saw them open for Brockhampton 2018 I think?, but nobody booed, we were just silent for the first song everyone was so confused nobody knew 100gecs and we were not expecting that, but by the second song we were getting pumped up
Anyone who goes to a live concert should watch this video beforehand! Supporting the opening acts is so important! Yes, you're there to see the band you love, but that band was once an opener too, and the audience reactions to openers have such a big impact. If you love live music, be supportive of it when you're attending, whether you're a fan or not!
I feel like this is especially bad at music festivals. Cause so many ppl literally just go for the headliners. I saw ppl camp out at the front of the main stage ALL DAY one time for Tyler the Creator at a music festival. If you're gonna do that hang out by the sound booth. Don't hog the front rail. And definitely do pay the other acts dust lol
I’ve gone to concerts with friends to see opening acts while they wanted to see the main artist. Didnt realize this was even a thing... like, a lot of bank can be made off openers bc people will come out just to see them, too
@punkyjewster2350 I've done the same! Some of the best gigs I've been to have been for the openers; I usually get more room to dance in the crowd because everyone else is off getting drinks etc. I usually find myself drawn to smaller artists anyway since I hate stadium concerts and prefer to see my favourite bands in more intimate venues.
I got called the F slur and insulted in the bathroom at Dead and Co. last year by a bunch of old trucker-looking dudes because I was wearing a pink crop top. I know the outfit didn't fit the vibe they remembered from their youth but it was cold and I leant my friend my other shirt and this was the only other thing I had on me. Also IT'S THE GRATEFUL DEAD!!! If you've been listening to them for 40+ years and are acting like this at one of their shows have you even listened? TRY to have a good time. TRY to foster a good community for your favorite bands. I understand gatekeeping from people who don't enjoy the music and don't pay attention at shows and kill the vibe. Don't gatekeep from people who don't look like or live like you.
Laura and Dylan deserve way better than they get. they always put on such a fun show and have such unique style. its such a great time at their concerts and theyre still treated super badly putside of the fanbase. Even when they opened for MCR they were treated pretty poorly.
That’s the price you pay for being a pioneer. In 10-20 years people will look back on the stuff they were doing now fondly and as paving the way for many genres and sounds of the future. Unfortunately, now - in the present, they are largely misunderstood by “the masses”
Hey, Metalhead here! I just wanted to say as someone whose been to a lot of shows the past couple years, I'd say that the booing and yelling is unfortunately commonplace in a lot of "underground" (just in the non-mainstream sense) shows with artists that headline for bands like Municipal Waste, Obituary, or Deftones. I went to a show this year in fact (El Corazon, Seattle) where people where being quite disrespectful towards the openers (admittedly, some of the acts did go on a little long) but I think it sort of comes w the territory. Looking at the metal community as a whole there's so much gatekeeping, scrutinizing, misogyny, and immaturity. It's why I tend to stay away from reddit forums on the subject, and Twitter pages, because honestly it's just not helpful. I appreciate you saying that this isn't JUST a Gen-Z thing, bc truly I see more 40 year old men whining about Maria Brink not being "metal enough" than anything else. Sorry for the semi-off topic rant. But I thought maybe it could provide some clarity for people who are new to the scene. God that's a whole other thing in itself, with Deftones becoming more mainstream due to tiktok, I think people are forgetting the fanbase has around a long time now. B - Sides and rarities has been my favorite album since I was LITTLE little. So I have a lot of respect for a scene that is older than me, but yeah there's a lot of unsavory characters in the metal community (AND EVERY COMMUNITY, I LOVE METAL HEADS, THIS IS NOT JUST A METAL ISSUE)
As 31 y.o. metalhead, I think there's a huge hatred of autotune in the community that's leftover from the 2000s. I've listened to cumulatively hours of metalheads saying how much they hate autotune. So having an entirely autotuned set is destined to annoy a lot of those people. I personally like 100 gecs, but thinking of the metalheads I know, their exaggerated hatred of autotune would make them puke.
@@bassetts1899 absolutely! I'm also annoyed by autotune pretty easily, so I can see why they'd be shocked to hear that type of sound at a Nu-Metal event. I've never been much of a fan of 100 Geks, but I do appreciate the time and energy they put into their songs. I just think my generation tends to assume that the metal scene is just like any other music scene, and then get upset when it isn't.
Kinda reminds me of how My Chemical Romance was treated after playing with Slayer in London. they had water bottles and trash thrown at them and Gerard Way trolled the crowd by saying "This will go down as one of my favorite shows we've ever played" to spite the gatekeepers
100 gecs actually opened for an mcr concert i went to w some friends and the crowd wasn’t as bad as this but they were rude tbh. i love 100 gecs i was half there for them lmao
This is a great comparison cause gecs and mcr are both the face of the generation they grew up with, both queer, and surpassing their own scene when it comes to creativity and artistic vision
Hyperpop is also just a very queer coded and dominated/pioneered genre on top of how niche the sound can be, so it makes a lot of sense that a lot of "I'm so tough grrr, tough guy music can only sound like THIS" people didn't get it and actually started yelling slurs. Glad to see Gecs trolling them.
And it’s so ironic that these fans don’t realize that the artist who makes the music THEY like understand that hyper pop is pretty damn innovative and doing something new. Someone needs to tell them that Chino Moreno probably would NOT fuck with them for bashing a band he thinks is worth adding to their lineup. The gate keeping is all so misguided and childish
I don't even think of Deftones as a tough guy band. Chino is one of the few metal vocalists who doesn't bodybuild and he's usually moaning in your ear like he's about to cum
I’m an older person. I’m in the exact age of first wave Deftones fans, and I love 100 Gecs. A lot of people after the age of 30 stop listening to new music, they just listened to the same artists from 10 years ago who still have careers, and eventually they’re totally disconnected from the scene entirely. In my mind, if I’m going to a concert I’m going to respect the opening acts because the artist likes them or they wouldn’t tour with them! I try to listen in advance to those bands too. If you respect the headliner respect the opening act!
what’s funny is that chino is the exact opposite mentality of his fans musically. he’s always been a huge fan of underground electronic acts; from arca to purity ring to 100 gecs, etc. you’d think if you genuinely love an artist as diverse musically as chino you’d kind of be open to new sounds but apparently not lol.
@@cosmo7437 right?! I’m willing to admit I didn’t really listen to Deftones, because I was a musical snob and as soon as someone said “nu metal” I said “I’m good.” But I got recommended a Crosses song and thought, “wait, who is this?!” Imagine my surprise that I’d just wasted like 25 years being a pretentious prick. I was inverted, I was the guy who would love 100 Gecs and hate Deftones. Now I’m glad they’re both in my collection. Deftones are a really unique band so I agree, I’m surprised all these old fuckers aren’t willing to listen to music that’s “out there.” But I also expect a lot of those dudes listened to a couple of songs and that’s their entire understanding of Deftones. I’ve seen a lot of people pay a lot of money to listen to artists they are hardly obsessed with.
I think most of us swifties would like them. Swifties are feral online but we are pretty polite in group settings and very friendly. We would just give queef jerky members friendship bracelets.
100gecs is one of the greatest concert experiences I've had. But partially because 100gecs fans are really really fun. Sad that people ruin it for actual fans.
Gecs shows are normally so positive and crazy and fun. Seeing them in Vancouver was one of the best shows ive been to. These people are lame. So many people are so incredibly rude about 100gecs, if you talk about them online outside of gecs specific spaces almost everyone shits on you and rants about how its not even music and its the reason music is bad these days or whatever. People love to think that their subjective opinions on things are objective truth and then force their shitty opinions on everyone else.
I feel like most people who have a very hard opinion on 100gecs music have heard like one song maybe Plenty of music doesn’t sound like “what music sounds like”
I think part of the reason i enjoy them is the maximalism and how just insane they are. Normies see it as too experiemntal and hurts their ears and it is too poppy for serious music heads lol thats what i like about them they are just themselves
Bc of this video I went to check out their music. There is some stuff I like to where I could be chill vibing to it at a festival or on a road trip if someone else wanted to play their songs. I probably personally wouldn’t play their song on my own if I wanted some music. They aren’t bad enough to be boo’d off the stage and say that it doesn’t sound like music. From the songs I’ve listened to they have some fun humor put into it which is fun and different
I was there and this guy in front of me kept yelling slurs and flipping them off. I think what made it worse is that 100 Gecs had an hour long set, and over time people got more and more angry. People were playing mobile games and being disrespectful overall. I went with a friend who was also miserable and she was saying how lame they were. Meanwhile I felt really bad for the two other people in front of me were huge 100 Gecs fans.
I went to the “Boogenius” show (Boygenius’s final show of their tour) with a last minute invite purely to see 100 Gecs open. Had a great time with the surprise of someone opening before them, Sloppy Jane, who was insanely amazing, was thrilled with the Gecs set outside of the disappointment of them NOT performing Frog on the Floor, and then the pure shock of them pulling out Dave Grohl for a Boygenius song and the two times I nearly cried from how beautiful and touching Boygenius’s performance was. People hating in openers are assholes. Let them get their music out there. Just because you don’t like them doesn’t mean nobody enjoys their sound. Gecs are love, Gecs are life.
Also I went to a headlining gecs show and was so pleased to see such a wonderful, diverse, alternative crowd. It’s a reminder that someone can be an “old head” aka have a fixed and closed mindset at any age!
Seeing you for open for tessa violet and half-alive was literally magical, and if I'm bein fr, I went to that concert being way more excited abt you and nick than either of the other artists hehe. They were absolutely amazing, but I do really feel like the energy you had in the opener carried the hype and positive energy for the entire concert and it really made my 21st birthday absolutely amazing ty :))
This definitely isn't a new thing, throwing bottles of piss at bands was pretty common place at Reading and Leeds festival in the 2000s. Pop duo Daphne and Celeste had to be carried off stage for their own safety when they played.
what IM confused about is like... do ppl NOT look at all the bands thatll be performing in a concert before they actually buy tickets????? like how are u gonna consciously buy tickets for a concert 100 gecs will be playing at and then proceed to get mad when they go on stage????????? i feel like im going insane
I was at this show and honestly it was really a buzzkill how many people like just stood there and hated on 100 gecs. I don’t listen to them but it was fun to just enjoy the music and dance but I was too scared to dance and enjoy it for a while because it was just hundreds of people standing there and looking at you weird for enjoying the music playing. Super sad and wish I could’ve enjoyed the new music better
This is my first time hearing about a 100 Gecs. Even if an opener is not my cup of tea, I would never harass the performers or treat them like they're not even there. I'd go grab a drink or something. I can't imagine what it must feel like to be treated like that when you're sharing something so vulnerable, something that you love.
its weird the arguments about this being framed as a generational thing. this sort of stuff has been happening for decades. 15 years back bjork was the performing at a series of concerts for an australia wide festival and was on just before rage against the machine... i've never seen someone so disrespected at a live performance as she was. it was only this year she made her way back to australia and i have a feeling it might have been because of this festival in 2008
i love 100 gecs and i think they’re awesome but obviously it’s okay for someone not to like them. what isn’t okay is when you are calling a band slurs, yelling at them to get off stage, and overall being extremely disrespectful just because you don’t like the band
I once had someone come to the front of the stage and beg us to stop playing. Tbf, we were just playing the chorus to Louie Louie over and over again for 20+ minutes straight
after having both Gecs europe tours cancelled to my absolute dismay, seeing these ppl actually get to see Gecs live and have this reaction makes me feel things I can't discuss publicly

There's a recording of Anthony and the Johnsons performing a song for a crowd of people who are there for the headliner who is Current 93 - super different artists. At the end of their performance literally complete silence from the crowd, no applause at all, even though they just knocked it out of the park, and Antony says "tonight its just the two of us". I think you can still find the recording out there - its a live recording of The Lake.
Dude, I can't even imagine how rancid the vibes must be at a festival full of people like this. I hang out a lot on the EDM and jam fest scene - and don't get me wrong, that scene has tons of its own issues - but one of the things that it has going for it is it's general intolerance of people being downers. Whenever I'm at a festival I feel like I can have fun anywhere, doing anything, with nearly any person who happens to be around me. If you're going to let a set you don't like ruin your fun, instead of just enjoying the time fucking around with your friends while you wait for music you do like, you're probably not someone I'd invite to a party, js.
it’s so weird to me to act like that as a deftones fan, they literally made their sound by putting together a WIDE range of influences and lots of ppl turned their noses up at them in the 90s for not being “real metal” etc also u can hear the gecs/hyperpop influence on some of the tracks on the new crosses album (one of chino’s side projects)
i saw 100 gecs open for brockhampton in 2018 and tbh i reacted like this at first because it was so different than what i was expecting. i think it’s fair to have an initial reaction of shock or disappointment if the music isn’t your taste but it’s easy to just hang out and wait and listen passively. i think people are just so anxious to see their favorite artist that they start behaving irrationally and almost blame the opener for delaying their artist coming on even tho that’s not how it works lmao. took me awhile to see the vision but i’m a big gecs fan now!
@@noahleach7690 I’m at the age where when I see Gen Z’ers discover Deftones, I think, “Ah, so this is how my mom felt when I started listening to Led Zeppelin in high school!”
this reminds me of when I went to a concert last weekend to see my favorite band play, they were on a double headline tour and swapping who went first and last each show (there still was an opener too). My fav band happened to go on first when I saw them, and there were 4 guys standing in front of my gf and me who were being complete assholes. They were covering their ears, thumbs downing songs, and making fun of people who were enjoying the music (like my gf and me). They were only there for the other headlining band, and it pissed me off that they were being so rude, but i also didn't understand why they were having such a visceral bad reaction to the band when their music is soooo similar to the other band, that's why they're double headlining LOL. the other band said that it was their dream to be on tour with the first band, and they'd prob hate anyone who'd be rude like that to the band. Never seen anything like that, but i guess people dont know how to act at shows
I feel like it’s an entitlement issue and not an age or generational issue. I feel like we live in a time where everyone feels and acts super entitled. I remember going to concerts as a teen and people would just show up to the concert later if they didn’t want to see the opener 😂 or they would at least not act or look like a total dick and move out of the crowd if they didn’t like the openers. Ofc there were always the buttholes that complained but most people just kind of sucked it up.
I’ve heard the opposite lol. My mom went to a lot of rock concerts when she was younger in the 90s and she’s said there was a lot of disrespect back then as well. Booing, throwing beer cans etc.
whenever i'm listening to live music and it's not really my thing or i don't know the song/artist, i still vibe and make the best of it. i can't imagine treating artists this poorly? it's literally not that hard to just have fun
when i go to a concert & the first acts before the main act isn't usually my vibe or whatever, I still vibe , clap for them when they finish a song , like these people are probably living a life long dream (so being booed or hated on must be gut wrenching) , I live in the moment and have fun , & appreciate every moment!
Different sounding bands is so important, even for smaller shows, but festivals even more so. Also everybody forgets about the Clash of Titans tour with Anthrax, Slayer and Megadeth, but Alice In Chains opening- before grunge was a thing. People were throwing things at Alice In Chains at every show. The second the tour ended, they blew up and grunge truly started it’s short reign lol
Damn bro, as a Deftones fan this shit makes me cringe in pain and agony. No wonder why people despise the fandom so much, this type of crowd fucking sucks.
Dang, I like you a lot and went to the first queef concert in Detroit. You were super friendly to meet and a great performer. But I dunno. Making fun of someone for the resting face they had watching the concert made me uncomfortable :/ I get you think their face is disrespectful, but they don't need "to get it checked out" or move out of front row because you don't want to look at them. Watch the performers, and don't make fun of concert-goers... hella disappointed
I understand her qualms since she is a performer herself and has been heckled before so it hits close to home. People tend to forget that the people they see on stage are people too and giving disrespectful looks is not cool esp if you are front row bc the artist can literally see you.
Right! I make faces like the black haired girl bc I’m blind. I’d cry if I was told that I need to fix my face and get it checked bc it was making the band upset.
I get why it hits close to home. I have seen her perform, and it is understandable to take it some type of way. But what she said was uncalled for and rude.@@Camille-st6jy
Notification gang rise up Edit after watching: One of the worst crowds I've been to in this regard was Fall Out Boy show with three openers with WILDLY different genres. It wasn't part of a tour so they weren't "normal" openers and most people were there to see FOB or a girl that was on before them, I wish I remembered her name. The first or second act was Kygo, who's an electronic musician/dj, and I felt AWFUL for him. No one was dancing and he clearly felt no energy. I was only 14 and was too nervous around all these dudes but I wishhhhh I could have danced and gave him at least something, because he was good! The crowd was so lifeless that by the time FOB came on they barely gave them anything either... lameeee
@@stereokuuji I went through the depths of my camera roll and it was Dec 8th 2015 at the Fillmore Detroit! The lineup was Nathan Sykes, Kygo, Tori Kelley, and then FOB
Funny bc the same thing kinda happened when I saw FOB at Wrigley. More people were singing along to the speaker that was playing I Write Sins Not Tragedies before the show than the actual big name openers. Albeit one of them was MGK so I was right there with the rest of the crowd in not fucking with his set, but Rise Against also played and to see such apathy to like Chicago Pop Punk legends that were opening in Chicago for FOB kinda hurt
Thank you for making this video… I love how you add more context to niche internet news that I thought I already knew a lot about. Also 100 gecs forever
I was at the show and despite me not being a fan, their set was fun. All the respect in the world for them cause despite the backlash, they performed their asses off. They didnt get discouraged and that was pretty fucking cool
As someone who’s attended metal festivals and etc, I fully believe one of the main reasons the crowd was this insanely gross toward 100 Gecs is because they’re visibly queer, they don’t conform to the weird way cishet people want queer (most often trans women and transfeminine) people to conform to.
I dont always smile. Sometimes Ill dance superhard with a plain face. Apparently its common with people on the spectrum. Maybe chill out with face-shaming people.
Being an opener can definitely be rough as hell. When I was in my first band (I was about 14 years old at the time) we got booked to open quite a large show for an international act and it was in a city we'd never played before. There must have been well over 1000 people in the audience and even though we were a nu-metal band just like all the other bands on the lineup I think because we were all so young (like 14-17) people assumed that we were some kind of manufactured industry plant "boy band with guitars" thing. During our set it was just a wall of faces staring blankly at us and after every song we were greeted with dead silence, it was like performing to a room of dead eyed mannequins. Also the actual stage itself was really big so we were all spread really far apart and it felt so fucking lonely up there. If you've ever had that dream about being in school and suddenly realizing you're not wearing pants, it felt exactly like that, one of the most excruciating 30 minutes of my life. After our set we went out into the crowd to watch the other bands and I noticed people pointing and laughing at us and making really shitty snide remarks at us like "N-Synckin Park" or "aren't they the mmm-bop kids?" and "your managers need to hire better ghostwriters" which really stung because we were literally just kids trying to have fun writing and playing our own music. That must have been about 20 years ago now and it's still one of the absolute worst experiences I've ever had as a musician, it's second only to the time of my other bands unknowingly got booked to play a show at what turned out to be a neo-n*zi bar... We didn't find out until we arrived at the venue, that was a genuinely, viscerally terrifying experience, especially for our guitarist who's half Ghanaian! But yeah, I totally feel for bands and artists having to deal with hostile crowds as an opening act, I've been there and it's a really awful feeling.
playing at a neo nazi bar is literally like the scene outve the movie Green Room ! fucking spooky . mustve felt like ur playing inside the salty spatoon
I feel like Gecs perfectly shows the growing divide between the old head generation and modern generation. They perfectly summarize the weird and ironic culture genz has with how experimental their music is and seeing people getting pissed and booing at an artist who was hand picked by the artist YOU CAME TO SEE is so infuriating. Like you can not like the music that's fine but you're disrespecting the people you call yourself a fan of by booing and being belligerent to other bands they wanted to open for them just because it didn't fit the aesthetic you're tryharding so bad to do. I feel like for bands in the metal and hardcore genres it can be especially bad because those genres have serious problems with people gatekeeping.
Wasn’t at this show but I have been to many metal shows, including Deftones. Most of the audience is waiting to start, get in, or form a circle around a huge mosh pit. I imagine that’s why their faces looked so displeased, hopefully their expressions were strictly subconscious.
you have a very unique stage presence. it's unfortunate to hear that some people didnt enjoy or understand it. but i havent seen any artists who have fun on stage the way that you do. i saw you when you opened and i saw you on your tour, and i enjoyed both of them a lot. it's refreshing!
I went to festival recently and there were people sitting on the ground in the middle of the crowd close to the stage so they could save their spot for when their favorite artist would go on. Not only is it not cool it's dangerous. They would look dirty at the people that bumped into them and from afar it looked like a big empty space so others tried to scooch over only to not be able to stand in that spot cause a bunch of people were sitting down. And it wasn't even that hard to get close to the stage at any point.
The issue isn't with any age; it's all with immediacy culture and the overconsumption (addiction?) of dopamine/serotonin that people have gotten accustomed to during the pandemic. People just don't know how to act anymore fr!
100 gecs was by far the best concert i have ever ever ever been too. they have so much energy and love for their fans and everyone who went was able to carry that energy throughout. i wish people could jsut have fun and enjoy the openers too!!! like they r humans!
as a casual observer that doesn't really like either band, i get the hate. it's a completely different genre of music and understandably wouldn't appeal to Deftones fans. Also, saying "don't look at people like that" is absolutely wild. look at people however you want. "You can't change how people act, but what you can change is how you react".
Don’t those audience members realize that they are the people that their fav bands would hate? Deftones literally chose gecs for their festival. Show some respect. I know you said all that but damn I figured it was worth saying again lol
It's like when Jimi Hendrix opened for the monkees and got booed off stage. For those who don't know: the monkees were a very boy-next-door, boy band from the mid to late 60s, that started as a TV show. The show depicted a fictional band, but then they ended up as a real band and they still have shows. Well one of them does because the rest have passed, but when they were alive they still did shows. They had a mixed style because they all had different music tastes and it shows, but overall they were very pop-y. They're not as popular or timeless as hendrix, obviously. So it's sort of wild to hear that the legend Jimi Hendix got booed off stage by a crowd who would rather listen to a group as simple as The Monkees.
i defend your stance on resting bitch face in the audience bc my sister and i went to see the danny and drew we are two different people tour with one of her friends and she sat there looking PISSED OFF 😭😭 it was a tiny venue too so anytime danny or drew would look in our direction i'd feel so embarrassed bc everyone else is laughing and having a good time while our friend is just there like "😠" the entire time.
I agree w what ur saying about the pissed off faces but I hate the idea that someone recorded them without asking and now these random people are gonna be viciously bullied for it
This reminds me of an old friend of mine that used to make 100 Gecs-esque music back in like 2010-2015ish. Dude was also in a hxc band that my band did a split with and almost everyone in the scene was so dismissive and rude about his other stuff. I always loved it. I can 100% see this happening.
Ngl i feel a it for the peeps who look angry even if theyre having fun. I don't have a resting bitch face but apparently a resting sad face. The amount of times I've been asked if I was okay because I looked sad at events where I'm having a great time I'm just not actively smiling is bizarre.
I love how despite the losers booing at them, 100 gecs still shined at their show. I love Deftones and 100 gecs, and it's so great to see that despite the negativity both bands shined at what they do best
It seems like society has lost all their manners,.......adults acting like children, literally! So selfish! If my favorite band organized a festival and invited other bands, that I wasn't a fan of, perform at the festival, I'd respectfully watch and give them a chance just cause they are invited by my favorite band. It's all about showing some respect and courtesy to others. Can't imagine how intimidating it is for opening bands to have to perform to a bunch of people who might not even like them.
Anyone who didnt look pleased at the front is totally fine in my opinion. They are in the front row because they want to be there for the main act. Its fine not to like the opener. It's the hecklers and other idiots actually acting out that deserve to be called out. People just minding their business waiting for the main act didnt do anything wrong. Cant tell them to wait in the back cz they purposely got to the front cz thats where they want to be for the main act. Also, not everyone is gonna like everything and this is to be expected when a band of an entirely different genre opens. Basically, be mad at the people actually disrupting the show. Im sure people with sour faces are easy enough to ignore.
it's not just since the pandemic, either. I saw Coheed and Cambria open for Slipknot once and the crowd was audibly pissed. I love both bands so I was confused. ALSO, artists usually have a hand in choosing their openers so... stop being disrespectful, humans.
every time i hear about deftones anywhere i just think about how i DID see them live but literally the only words i heard mr. chino moreno sing were "SHOVE IT" because for some reason the people working the speakers put the drums in the front speakers and the vocals in the back. absolutely atrocious work from that tech team
just saw my first concert this weekend, and i can say with confidence that two of the openers were not my cup of tea, but i cant imagine being mad at seeing them perform? like, you paid for the show, just hang out for a few minutes like a grown adult :|
it’s also very common in the alternative music scene for bands of different genres to tour together. multiple bills like this show up every year, it’s nothing new that should shock them!!!
I 100% expected this reaction when I saw 100gecs on the lineup. Lots of respect for 100gecs and Deftones. I have no respect for people who don't try new things.
how people treat opening bands has always been annoying. i went to see Awolnation in like 2013. Blondefire was opening band #1 and people were bored. they werent outwardly rude but no one was really dancing. it's a MUCH lower vibe than awolnation. but then motherfucking Mother Mother came on, opening band #2. this was right when they were just starting to become popular. and the crowd fell in LOVE with them, including me. someone called out "hey you guys are great!" lol. awolnation was great, there was crowd surfing and it was super high energy and great vibes. but sometimes you just gotta make sure your opening bands MATCH your vibe or it won't be a fun time
went to Hinterland this summer, and during the Bon Iver headliner set, Zack Bryan fans kept talking loudly over each song and were surprised when people asked them to be quiet.
Concerts are an emotional place for people, and in my experience they've always been spaces where lots of very positive AND very negative things are happening simultaneously. I think the Kiss concert example is a great example of how there's always been hatred in these situations. As far as gift giving goes, that's also long been a thing at concerts and festivals. Not even just giving gifts to performers, but random audience members giving amazing, ultra generous gifts to people they met seconds ago. Concerts are just a very interesting space where I think we tend to see very extreme versions of people. It can get raw, and in that same sense, it's beautiful.
I went to a festival in the south of France where there was two sets and while we were all waiting for Arctic Monkeys there was Juliette Armanet performing. So obviously a few of us turned sideways, danced, and enyoyed ourselves but I was given dirty looks from many people around who were looking bored and seeming annoyed at other people having fun.
Nah, if an artist is THAT bad, I don’t think I can control the look of disgust. I doubt 100 Gecs are pressed that two people looked a little flabbergasted
This happened at a festival in Australia and New Zealand recently. A festival run by live nation called 'Listen Out' has run for a few years now mostly bringing the largest hip hop and electronic acts to oceania. The New Zealand location is actually called 'Listen In" since they tryna be alty lol. Most recent Listen Out this year had no issues at all the main cities. But the Perth location made it an R16 venue which ended up in a mosh of 16 year olds booing off and throwing items at Marc Ribillet as Ice Spice was on afterwards
when i went to the half alive boston show by myself to see dev, i had no idea who half alive was or anything about their music, and since everyone was wearing black i was pumped and thought the show would be so lively and hype, but then nobody moved at all and i was kinda bummed!!! i think it gets to a point where being respectful and not bumping people or being rowdy where it ruins the fun and the vibe a little bit-i was ready to throw myself around but they were way too polite lol. still had so much fun, dev and nick killed it 🖤
I think I agree with anthanoy fantano when he said that when he said that when it comes to openers that it should be 2 completly different sounds evem genres cause thats how you find new music and maybe even something that could be your new fave
ppl are too much in their heads. like, even if the group performing isn’t your cup of tea, you’re at a fucking festival, fuck around and get hyped, even if you’re faking it. you go to festivals to have fun, make lemonade out of lemons and have fun. ppl are too serious.
This is how it was seeing Sematary as one of the openers for $uicideBoy$ at Grey Day this year. People weren’t booing but a majority of the people looked pissed that Sematary was there. Some of us tried to dance and get a pit going but the crowd wasn’t really letting us. It’s not like Sematary is even that different from $uicideBoy$ either.
MCR had 100 gecs as an opener in georgia and there were so many people who didn’t know who they were are were openly making fun of them while me and me friend were trying to enjoy 100 gecs set.
wasnt there but openers are public knowledge and if you dont want to see them come later. if you come early to get good seats/spots then you put up with the in between. wild behavior
Having any hyperpop act open for an older band is a risky move
I love when there's risks taken in the music scene. Sucks that the community, more-often-than-not, doesn't react well to it. It's art.
I am a 100 Gecs lover and my friend went to the London show. Apparently was great. I went to a Dorian concert and, looking at twitter afterwards, it was just people NOT AT THE CONCERT making fun of how we were all dressed. Crazy good fun though!

it was fucked up how much brockhampton fans hated on dylan and laura when brockhampton is obviously inspired by them and members of the group collaborated with them lol
That's such a goddamn Alpha move though

@@Lucifersfursonayou didn’t realize that people go for headliners? That’s kinda the point of a headliner…
I've been introduced to a ton of cool bands through opening acts, half of the time they're way more excited to be there than the frontrunner
That sucks:(( im so sorry
Thank you
Man, Jerry Garcia would not approve of those guys:(
Laura and Dylan deserve way better than they get. they always put on such a fun show and have such unique style. its such a great time at their concerts and theyre still treated super badly putside of the fanbase.
Yeah I like metal but there’s a of lot online communities I wouldn’t touch with a ten foot pole, just the most pretentious little shits live there.
Those bands aren’t/weren’t“underground”. Nu-metal fans are garbo.
As 31 y.o. metalhead, I think there's a huge hatred of autotune in the community that's leftover from the 2000s. I've listened to cumulatively hours of metalheads saying how much they hate autotune. So having an entirely autotuned set is destined to annoy a lot of those people. I personally like 100 gecs, but thinking of the metalheads I know, their exaggerated hatred of autotune would make them puke.
@@milk_bath lmao okay kiddo.
Kinda reminds me of how My Chemical Romance was treated after playing with Slayer in London. they had water bottles and trash thrown at them and Gerard Way trolled the crowd by saying "This will go down as one of my favorite shows we've ever played" to spite the gatekeepers
power move tbh
100 gecs actually opened for an mcr concert i went to w some friends and the crowd wasn’t as bad as this but they were rude tbh. i love 100 gecs i was half there for them lmao
This is a great comparison cause gecs and mcr are both the face of the generation they grew up with, both queer, and surpassing their own scene when it comes to creativity and artistic vision
I know that when my chem opened for mindless self indulgence the msi fans were telling them to k*ll themselves.
Chino is one of the few metal vocalists who doesn't bodybuild and he's usually moaning in your ear like he's about to cum
also I just want to say deftones AND nu metal as a whole from the perspective of a queer metalhead is VERY heterosexual

@@RandomSwiftie13 yeah i would expect that. it would just be so random compared to the other opening acts she has 😂
100gecs is one of the greatest concert experiences I've had.
I feel like most people who have a very hard opinion on 100gecs music have heard like one song maybe
Plenty of music doesn’t sound like “what music sounds like”
I think part of the reason i enjoy them is the maximalism and how just insane they are.
That's the reason I even got into them I love the hyperpop genre as a whole and experimental music is really good imo
HAHAHAHA
I’d end it all if I looked down after pouring my heart and soul out on stage and a nigga was playing subway surfers
Are you sure they had to be carried off?

A lot of festivals don't give a full line up until last second, the organizers are at fault a lot of the time I'm sorry to say.
I met Laura Les in a music store before I even knew who 100 Gecs was, and she was so cool and nice that I'll always have their back.
I've been to a 100 gecs show, it was a great experience, amazing even.
100 Gecs is a great opener for deftones because thet get unjustly hate like nu metal did when it forst started

There's a recording of Anthony and the Johnsons performing a song for a crowd of people who are there for the headliner who is Current 93 - super different artists. If you're going to let a set you don't like ruin your fun, instead of just enjoying the time fucking around with your friends while you wait for music you do like, you're probably not someone I'd invite to a party, js.
it’s so weird to me to act like that as a deftones fan, they literally made their sound by putting together a WIDE range of influences and lots of ppl turned their noses up at them in the 90s for not being “real metal” etc
also u can hear the gecs/hyperpop influence on some of the tracks on the new crosses album (one of chino’s side projects)
i saw 100 gecs open for brockhampton in 2018 and tbh i reacted like this at first because it was so different than what i was expecting. i think it’s fair to have an initial reaction of shock or disappointment if the music isn’t your taste but it’s easy to just hang out and wait and listen passively. i think people are just so anxious to see their favorite artist that they start behaving irrationally and almost blame the opener for delaying their artist coming on even tho that’s not how it works lmao. took me awhile to see the vision but i’m a big gecs fan now!

this reminds me of when I went to a concert last weekend to see my favorite band play, they were on a double headline tour and swapping who went first and last each show (there still was an opener too).
I love how dev just want to clarify and add extra shots in the vids like a apology video 😂😂

I agree. I think it's a bit too overly sensitive to comment on someone else's facial expression. We don’t know what they're thinking.
"Queef concert" 😭💀
I understand her qualms since she is a performer herself and has been heckled before so it hits close to home. People tend to forget that the people they see on stage are people too and giving disrespectful looks is not cool esp if you are front row bc the artist can literally see you.
Right! I make faces like the black haired girl bc I’m blind. I’d cry if I was told that I need to fix my face and get it checked bc it was making the band upset.
I get why it hits close to home. I have seen her perform, and it is understandable to take it some type of way. But what she said was uncalled for and rude.@@Camille-st6jy
Notification gang rise up
Edit after watching: One of the worst crowds I've been to in this regard was Fall Out Boy show with three openers with WILDLY different genres. The crowd was so lifeless that by the time FOB came on they barely gave them anything either... lameeee
KYGO OPENED FOR FOB
WHEN😮
@@stereokuuji I went through the depths of my camera roll and it was Dec 8th 2015 at the Fillmore Detroit!
I love 100 Gecs and my heart is breaking
as a casual observer that doesn't really like either band, i get the hate. it's a completely different genre of music and understandably wouldn't appeal to Deftones fans.
An inside laugher
I agree w what ur saying about the pissed off faces but I hate the idea that someone recorded them without asking and now these random people are gonna be viciously bullied for it
RIP to all the homies with resting b¡tch face 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾 can people frown or just look nonchalant in public anymore 😂😂😂
it looks like its a joke too, like that they probably dont care for the music but are exaggerating it for fun
5:10 “ummm whats up yall” LMFAOO I LOVE HER. it seems like they didnt take it too harshly
Was this ‘09 with Trivium? Saw them at Madison Square Garden that tour
every time i hear about deftones anywhere i just think about how i DID see them live but literally the only words i heard mr. chino moreno sing were "SHOVE IT" because for some reason the people working the speakers put the drums in the front speakers and the vocals in the back. absolutely atrocious work from that tech team
I’m blind and I look exactly like how the girl with the black hair was looking 😭😭😭
just saw my first concert this weekend, and i can say with confidence that two of the openers were not my cup of tea, but i cant imagine being mad at seeing them perform? like, you paid for the show, just hang out for a few minutes like a grown adult :|
i’m a very simple person. if laura les is on the stage, i’m paying attention.
it’s also very common in the alternative music scene for bands of different genres to tour together. multiple bills like this show up every year, it’s nothing new that should shock them!!!
i KNEW she was gonna make an insert cut after the 2:30 rant lmaooo love dev
I 100% expected this reaction when I saw 100gecs on the lineup. Lots of respect for 100gecs and Deftones.
I have no respect for people who don't try new things.
Those dudes with the hats are all divorced dads so they needed this to vent
I cant believe the Gecs got geckled 😩😭 leave them alone they just want to dress like wizards and be goofy lmao
Completely off topic but I love the Kirby plush’s position on the couch, it looks like he’s having an existential crisis😭😭
i am a strong believer in supporting local bands! i have never gone to an actual concert or music festival but ive been to many basement shows etc
how people treat opening bands has always been annoying. i went to see Awolnation in like 2013. Blondefire was opening band #1 and people were bored. they werent outwardly rude but no one was really dancing. it's a MUCH lower vibe than awolnation. but then motherfucking Mother Mother came on, opening band #2. this was right when they were just starting to become popular. and the crowd fell in LOVE with them, including me. someone called out "hey you guys are great!" lol. awolnation was great, there was crowd surfing and it was super high energy and great vibes. but sometimes you just gotta make sure your opening bands MATCH your vibe or it won't be a fun time
zheani opening for limp bizkit was jus sad. the crowd was so dead 😭
went to Hinterland this summer, and during the Bon Iver headliner set, Zack Bryan fans kept talking loudly over each song and were surprised when people asked them to be quiet.
Thank you for your videos, I've been really enjoying them the past few weeks (:
I went to a festival in the south of France where there was two sets and while we were all waiting for Arctic Monkeys there was Juliette Armanet performing. So obviously a few of us turned sideways, danced, and enyoyed ourselves but I was given dirty looks from many people around who were looking bored and seeming annoyed at other people having fun.
Literally a dream concert for me. Everyone complaining is so lame
i think a 100 gecs concert can be one of the wildest experiences ever this couple slaps fucking hard
But the Perth location made it an R16 venue which ended up in a mosh of 16 year olds booing off and throwing items at Marc Ribillet as Ice Spice was on afterwards
when i went to the half alive boston show by myself to see dev, i had no idea who half alive was or anything about their music, and since everyone was wearing black i was pumped and thought the show would be so lively and hype, but then nobody moved at all and i was kinda bummed!!! i think it gets to a point where being respectful and not bumping people or being rowdy where it ruins the fun and the vibe a little bit-i was ready to throw myself around but they were way too polite lol. still had so much fun, dev and nick killed it 🖤
Love 100 geccs 🤘 but I can enjoy Deftones.
Different genres not generations imo.
I went to a RHCP concert and Baby Metal opened. Everyone loved it. Idk why we can’t just appreciate music
