  • Adam Hoots discusses problems he's experienced firsthand during his career in the construction industry. He talks about how society teaches people to test rather than to learn and think for themselves, and how this severely affects the skilled trades. Adam began his career in the construction industry as a plumber's helper and then as a red-line architect’s helper while attending the University of South Florida. Over the past 20 years, he has steadily advanced his career and has held a variety of roles within the industry. Adam has successfully completed more than $1.5 billion in pre-construction and construction services for a diverse group of industries, including healthcare, higher education, industrial, life science, retail, and hospitality. Most projects have been in life science and high-tech laboratory construction for clients, such as Stanford University, Oregon Health Science University, National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST), and the University of Florida (NIMET). A highly technical builder, Adam excels in efficiency, action, visual communication, and continuous improvement using Lean principles. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Great presentation! I completely understand! When I was teaching overseas in Colombia it is often thought just poor uneducated individuals are in construction. I grew up in Construction and I'm so grateful for it because now there is nothing I can't attempt and take on. Our children are so valuable to our future Everyone is an artist when given the tools to create, everyone is a builder when given the opportunity to build.

Great talk. Same problems with prioritizing career paths overseas in Germany.
Even though BIM and other technologies and methodologies can in the long run improve the industry but still someone needs to pour those dreams into concrete.
