Holland Norway Lines - Groningen / Eemshaven, The Netherlands - Kristiansand, Norway by ferry HNL

- The first crossing of a new potentially great ferry connection from the Netherlands to Norway. I took the ferry, on board of MS Romantika (owned / leased from Tallink Silja Line) on the route Groningen / Eemshaven in The Netherlands to Kristiansand in Norway. A great connection for both car and train passengers and for those who like to do a mini-cruise.

Please note, Holland Norway Lines stopped services due to financial difficulties.
Hopefully they are able to relaunch the ferry service or another (bit more professional company) will take over this line.
In the mean time, this are my personal alternatives:
ALTERNATIVE 1
By train to Kiel in Germany and from there on by ferry to Gotenborg in Sweden, where you can take a train to Oslo (video about this route: ua-cam.com/video/p9WL7S50oUE/v-deo.html)
Ferry operator is Stena Line
ALTERNATIVE 2:
For the Netherlands this only works from Norway to the Netherlands, not the other way around (unless you sleep in Hamburg or Kiel):
From Oslo to Kiel in Germany and from Kiel to The Netherlands. Ferry operator is Color Line (keep a close eye on my channel, I really would like to make a video about this connection)
ALTERNATIVE 3:
By train to Lübeck and from Lübeck there are 3 sailings per day to Malmö in Sweden, you can continue your way by train to Oslo from there.
There is one very late departure that is perfect to reach from the Netherlands, even after a day at the office.
Operator is Finnelines (keep a close eye on my channel, I really would like to make a video about this connection). Please do note you might need to take a Taxi in Malmö (especially in the weekend)
ALTERNATIVE 4:
By train to Rostock in Germany and by ferry to Trelleborg (below Malmo) in sweden and continue your way from there (I do have a video on this route as well: ua-cam.com/video/7SQ0t-9gCwI/v-deo.html)
Ferry operator Stena Line
ALTERNATIVE 5:
Travel by train, book an overnight in Malmö and travel from Malmö to Oslo.
You can book your ticket via de German railways to Gothenburg (it's also valid the next day for the regional trains between Malmo and Gothenburg) and from Gothenburg you can book your ticket via Entur to Oslo
ALTERNATIVE 6:
Travel by train to Hirtshals in Denmark and take a ferry from there to Kristiansand in Norway
On this route there are 2 ferry companies, Color Line & Fjord Line (Color Line terminal is next to the station in Denmark)
MORE OPTIONS:
This is just a quick summary, there are more ways to travel.
I really hope this connection will be back soon and I also hope there will be a different management, so far I like this connection, the service was average (I went another time in 2023 and this was much better than during this trip report). I think another vessel will be more suitable as well, more space for freight, because that's a sector that hasn't been served enough by HNL.
Sad to hear HNL went bankrupt. I took this ferry in May 2022 and was very pleased with the amenities of the vessel and the journey overall.
Hopefully this connection will make a return someday.
As a norwedigan from kristiansand. This ferry brings a direct connection between Norway and western Europe. The last vacation i was on we took the ferry to Netherlands and continued to Belgium and took the Eurostar to london
It's a prefect addon to the exciting services. With the exciting setvices, you have to know what to book and where what connection is. This line makes it a lot easier for everyone to travel between Norway and Western Europe. I'm curries about what will happen after 3 years when the lease contract ends.
@@Trainviking Only 3 years lease contract ? With the limited ferries from before to Hirtshals it has been a new option for many, hope it will stay on.
Brilliant video! Thanks for sharing!
The new ferry connection have bring Norway and the Netherlands much closer to each other. I have never been in Netherland before this ferry connection. Now is it much more easy for norwegians in southern part of Norway to vist the Netherlands, especially for norwegians who live in the area around Kristiansand. This ferry is a very good thing for Norway and the Netherlands.
Agree, and it gives more alternatives for flying. I'm doing a hike now in The Netherlands, that started not far from the starting point of thus ferry. 2 weeks ago I was setting in a train that was connected to this ferry and it was full with Norwegians, actually the train was pretty full. I really hope this would be a commercial successful connection, one ferry can replace more than 10 flights.
Yeah, It will increase tourism between the two countries buy at least 25%
Done this trip mid december with a extra night in Kristiansand,,, loved it and soon we will be back
I did this trip past summer and it was an amazing experience!
Very instructive video - love it! for your information as I'm planning a trip this year's end, The port of departure is no longer in Eemshaven NL but in Cuxhaven D which makes the rail approach less easy! Last information I have is from June HNL ferry will depart from Emden , Germany...
From June it will be From Emden, actually that's maybe even better. The sailing times are also a but better from Emden. Cuxhaven is no serious option to me though.
@@Trainviking Thank you for your return, I have to find a rail connection from Antwerp or Bruxelles to Emden , my travel will be in December, still time to deep dive
Good video. We did this trip both ways. The luxury rooms have proper box spring beds. The standard cabins have standard mattresses in a bed without suspension. The result is a bad sleep with a lot of waking up and a broken back in the morning.
The food is good and the entertainment is good enough. We enjoyed the trip very much.
Great to hear that you enjoyed the trip.
I have use this ferry two times between Tallinn - Stockholm and Riga - Stockholm.
Your videos are awesome. Thank you.
Great video, thank you. I am going on this ship next summer with my car. The great fjords on the west coast are not far away from Kristiansand.
Absolutely, Norway is awesome.
Great video 👍Hope that they will make things better.
Very interesting trip report
It's a brand new ferry company and route
It is, the ferry itself is a bit older though. When I have budget and I need to travel om this route in the future again, I'll definitely will give this route a new try for a video.
Seems very toes in the water at the moment. Temporary departure container, temporary leased ship, etc. I hope it lasts, as this line must take quite a few planes out of the sky. If it does become a success I hope to see a new review with the new departure hall and new ship.
I know what you mean, and in a way we really have to see how things will develop. I honestly think a ship with a different capacity would be more interesting (more trucks and cars, less passengers). Might be less interesting for a mini-cruise, however they only offer mini cruises to fill up the huge capacity. I think for truck drives this is perfect, travel and rest so they can travel further from the Netherlands (and you avoid Germany where trucks are not allowed on the highway on Sunday).
The current spot at the harbor in Eemshaven is really temporary, this space is needed for something else, so this is why it's all temporary. By leasing a vessel, you take less risks than buying something. However their ambitioun is to own a vessel.
I really hope and think this can be something successful especially when both ferry terminals will function more like a hub between other public transport and ferries (for example one ditect ticket via Kristiansand to Hirtshals).
I like the new connection, it adds something what wasn't there anymore however it's still easy to travel to Norway without this ferry, you just have to plan a bit more. It can replace many airplanes between The Netherlands and Norway and that's a great development.
Some 15 years ago we had a direct ferry to England, and if you go 50 years back we had ferries to different cities in denmark and England, today only Denmarl and the Netherlands
I hope there will be more launched soon. Not like colour line what are only cruise ships, but true ferries.
We also had direct ferry to Sweden too. :)
Oddly, this might serve as a substitute Oldenburg Hbf Bremen Hamburg Hauptbahnhof Lübeck Puttgarden Vogelfluglinie Copenhagen route for Norway. If the missing section was rebuilt Friesenbrücke Bahnstrecke Bremen Oldenburg Bad Nieuwschans Groningen Emshaven.
Very interesting trip report. Thanks for that. I think i missed the price or didn't you mentioned it? Because i would love to visit norway by train but the snall-thingy train is way overprized imho.
If you book on time, prices are okay. However, interrail might he the best way to travel in Norway.
About the prices for the ferry, best thing is to look this up at www.hollandnorwaylines.com
Good information ☺️
Really great video! I suggest you to come and try out Tallink (where Romantika was leased from). You could try Tallinn-Stockholm line with M/S Baltic Queen, Baltic Queen is based on Romantika, but she is newer and longer.
I'd love to take those routes. I took Stockholm - Helsinki with Tallink (also viking line) before I started this channel. I really would like to make some more ferry video's. I have at least 3 coming up by the way, one short international ferry and 2 long distance ferries.
@@Trainviking Cool, I'm waiting. :D
I assume HNL did not choose the interior and facilities of the boat themselves since it is being leased, so perhaps not all facilities present will actually be used.
No they didn't choose anything by themselves. However the way they talk about everything, it will all be used.
I see my self a view times in your video :-)
I subscribe your review and connected HNL with the same things
They took it very serious.
I have a video of the stormy night onboard :-)
This week was bad for them again :-(
In 2 weeks I go again :-)
Haha yes I agree. I just really wish this to be a good and successful connection. However I also hope that they will change things and mayve have another company operating this profitable route.
If you book solo, do you have to share the cabin with other travellers?
Nope, it's all private.
The passenger bridge will be used in the future right? Doesn't feel safe mixing it with all those crazy cars
It was really safe, the cars where only allowed to leaf after the foot passengers left the ferry. About the future, I really don't know. In about 2 years (earliest 1 year), I'll try to make a new video on this connection, they deserve a 2nd chance.
is there any chance to do a German translation ? I think a lot of German people would like to hear about this new ferry
I might consider this maybe for some videos. However it's A LOT of work, I do speak pretty good German however my writing isn't that good (due to the cases) and translation is really A LOT of work.
Just out of curiosity, as I can't find the answer on the HNL website. Apologies if it's a silly question, but how does one pay for meals etc. on the boat? Is it by creditcard? Cash? Or is it somehow billed to your room? Other than that, thank you for your highly informative and entertaining video, which in my opinion is even more informative than the HNL website.
No silly question. This is something that should be clearly on their website. I've paid everything by Mastercard. But I think cash should be fine as well.
The HNL website is really bad, they haven't placed themselves in a role of a guest on board and wondering what the guest might want to know. I really hope this video (and this comment) is being watched by them.
This is Shahzeb from Pakistan. I'd like to ask you, Copenhagen to Oslo is merely 6 hours by road. So why would one not take a 6 hours bus? Rather take a 17 hours ferry to reach Copenhagen to Oslo?
Just curious!
This ferry is not from Copenhagen to Oslo but from The Netherlands to Oslo. Travel time is more or less equal. Besides that, in a ferry you have lots of space, it's like a hotel.
Too bad this route was terminated.
It was my shortcut from Norway to Groningen. :(
very nice. but it would be better if they tried the ferry to scottland. skandinavian ferrys are enough
This is a welcome connection but not a big disaster if it doesn't turned out to be a succes indeed. There are are alternatives (although this is still a great connection). In general Scotland should have a main land connection with Europe, especially if they want to be independence and join the rest of Europe.
Apart form geo-political connections, it would be nice to see a ferry from Scandinavia to Great Britain, there is nothing at this moment. The Hook of Holland - Harwich connection is very popular among Scandinavians, because it's nearby (a video on that is coming btw, some things will change at the terminal in July, so u want to film the new situation. That video will be online earliest August).
They don't sell underwear??? It's a ferry dude. You'll be ashore in the morning
It's just an example, basic stuff is not being sold at the moment I did the journey. It's a good way for them to generate business, that's all I'm saying.
