  • Sorry about the subpar audio quality in this video!
Welcome to another sketchbook tour! This summer I didn't really have a lot of time and energy for sketching on the side, so there's a gap in my sketchbook in July and August. But there are ways to finish a page in a satisfying way even if you can't sketch very often.

Your sketchbooks are very pretty! I am not a sketchbook person. I tried so many times to force myself into it but I prefer drawing/painting finished work.
BTW I was born and lived in Kassel-Harleshausen for 40 years before we moved to Australia. It feels good to see all those familiar places in your drawings.

Thank you so much Silke! I've only warmed up to sketchbooks in the last few years, so I understand how weird sketching can feel. Maybe as a compensation I often put very much detail into my sketches.
And what a coincidence that you are from Kassel originally! I've come to really like it here. :-)

beautiful sketches. I appreciate how you show your "unfinished pages" as well as it reminds us not everything has to be perfect, especially in sketchbooks :)

Exactly that's the thing I'm trying to bring across. Thank you! :-)

Your video and sketches made me so nostalgic to be able to go out in nature as much as I did growing up. ❤️🦋✨✍🏻
Definitely inspired me to try to get outdoors more with my sketchbook.

I definitely know this nostalgic feeling - as a kid I too spent so much more time outside. And I probably still wish for that, too and try to get in more time outdoors by sketching. I'm happy to hear this video is an inspiration for you! 💚😊

Hello Julia, it's good to hear from you. So glad you had a productive and observant summer with a nice variety of things to draw. Here in Ohio, there was very little of anything to draw. I guess it can frustrating with different textued papers to work with from page to page; but still admire your handmade sketchbooks. Hope you and yours are doing well and thank you for sharing your lovely drawings.

Thank you Roksanna, good to read from you. :-) I hope that at some point I'll simply be so fed up with the different papers that I'll stick to one specific kind.

Beautiful work and your layouts are always so inspiring. I'm in the southern U.S. and the intense heat and humidity kept me indoors where I practiced, practiced, practiced. Looking forward to Autumn!

Summer was short here in Romania as well. I don't know about the global warming they keep preaching on ghe news but I sure feel summers are getting shorter every year and cold weather is taking up more months. So yeah, not a lot of sketching here as well compared to 2 years ago, but probably also because I had a lot of client work coming out of the pandemic. Definitely spending too much on art supplies that I never use. You should do a class on that :)

Global warming and climate change don't only mean warmer summers or heat waves, but also longer blocks of other weather conditions (like the endless amount of rain this summer in Middle Europe). It has to do with the weakening jet stream that causes weather systems sort of get stuck in one place for a longer period of time. So unfortunately long cold spells are also a sign of global warming.
Here's an article along with some good visuals that explain what happens:

Hi Julia I like your sketchbooks and website which has so much valuable information!
I have a question regarding sketchbooks. Should the 'sketches' lead to drawings/paintings on single sheet of paper? If not, then shouldn't they be called 'drawing/painting books' as they are the place where you draw and paint, and hold all the finished pieces? Is sketchbook a means or an end itself? If I am to have a sketchbook, should I aim to fill it up with beautiful and neat images, even with notes around them, or use it as research for a final piece? So many pretty sketchbooks on youtube, I'm very confused.

Hi Danny, thank you for this great question. There is no absolute rule for sketchbooks, some artists use them for experiments or studies, or for preliminary pieces before making a finished drawing/illustration. For some artists the sketchbook is all there will ever be. You decide what you want your sketchbook to look like, how you like to work with it, and what goes in. Of course, these things can change over time or even within a sketchbook. My main goal of having a sketchbook (and this can be different for everyone) is to keep a record of my encounters in nature, have a place for learning (this can be: techniques, or things I see in nature), explore different media, and have a place for studies before doing finished illustrations. Very often these studies can look very messy and unfinished, for me that's ok because my sketchbook is the place where I can research and make mistakes and find out how things work visually.
I hope this long-winded explanation helps you a bit in deciding what you might want to use a sketchbook for. :-)

@@NatureSketchbook Julia thank you so much for taking time to make this detailed reply. I guess I was so caught up in the idea of having a sketchbook for the sake of having one. It's nice to have nice things, and the sketchbooks on youtube are all so pretty, filled with nice images, almost like an art object itself. I think I just wanted to have a beautiful obejct like those. But now after your explanation of different uses, I think I would move towards doing study for final piece. Thanks again :)

I enjoyed seeing your beautiful pages. I’ve been doing “ nature journaling for long time because no commitment to big paintings. I spend a lot of time trying to identify everything wild so this is a great way to keep a record of it. I recently moved from inland sea of Pacific Ocean to high mountains where I used to live - sometimes can count 10 or more flower species on one walk. Not much plein aire because take my dog but then look in guide books for information and drawing. Not picky about paper but just got an expensive all cotton and hesitate to use. Hardly any butterflies here - sadly - don’t know why. Lots of birds. No rain since June! Now Sept .So my 14 journals are full of texts about nature, and my drawings and small paintings and swatches of new watercolors. Love new colors. Traveling but don’t do much of that any more but love making maps and experimenting/learning. My idea of journaling is not to worry - it’s just helping me remember what I did that day. Getting old and love looking back at all my pages.

@@rosemarypetersen143 That sounds like you have a wonderful journaling practice Rosemary! Do try out that cotton paper journal - it won't do any good sitting on the shelf and you can create something new with it - a sketchbook wants to be used!
