    ABOUT THIS VIDEO
    Falling backwards can result in serious injury if you don't know what you're doing. To protect your head, make sure you keep your chin tucked and try to fall in a way that keeps your head away from the ground. Falling diagonally helps accomplish this. Rotate your body to dissipate the impact of your fall to a larger surface area. Make sure to use your arm and hand to break the fall.
    Exercises to strengthen your upper body and lower will help you fall without injury. Be sure to build up enough strength and stability so you can absorb impact without serious injury.

      I did fall like that, since I know how to fall without hurting myself after falling from horses and objects. So I was unharmed but for one thing. My humerus snapped. It’s not supposed to do that on a fifty something old from a simple fall. So, apparently I have to osteoporosis, a genetic kind, and now need to build muscles to protect myself better. And your videos are helpful. Thanks.

    It is so important to practice falling. I do that with pillows on the floor. Recently , I stepped onto a downward slope without realizing it and went down, holding bags in each hand. I did not know how I turned my ankle, but I twisted my body mid-air to land on my fat thigh and rolled without letting my hand get involved, ( DO NOT BREAK MY WRIST!) holding my head, tucked and safe. I taught my friend, who was 90 to fall safely, and she came home from a trip, and told me that as she slipped on a hotel bathroom floor, she remembered my words, 'Do not let your head hit the ground! Tuck and roll!' She was so proud of herself for landing safely. Thank you for another useful video.

    Matt, I resisted watching both “Falling” videos: until I read your email this morning. So sorry for the loss of your Dad. After watching both videos, I agree that I need to prepare myself for falling. And that means getting so much stronger, specifically in the areas specified. No one wants to imagine themselves falling, but your videos help us to prepare. Like an insurance policy. you hope you never need to use it, but it’s there, just in case. Thanks, Matt!

    Invaluable information, and it looks like fun! I had a really bad, unavoidable, fall six weeks ago when a 180+ lb gate fell on me, throwing me to the ground and landing on top of me, pinning me. I couldn’t have done any of these techniques to mitigate the fall because of the gate, but the paramedics told me I was lucky that I was holding the gate and it fell with me rather than landing on me after I fell, or they wouldn’t be talking to me in the ambulance. Luckily, I broke no bones. Just bruises and a concussion because my head hit the ground and the gate hit my forehead. My late husband was prone to falls the year before he died, and I have been a bit paranoid about falling since. These videos are invaluable at my age (70) and I’m preparing to get onto the program starting Thursday.

    I am incredibly grateful you made this video. I will practice it and teach it to my parents. This is so important! Yesterday, family was hitting softballs and one rolled towards me. I stepped on the ball both feet flew up in the air, i fell backwards, tucked, rolled backwards diagonally on a downward sloped dirt road (rutted from big tractors)and popped up standing on my feet. It happened so fast i didn't know what happened! I didn't get hurt!! I'm in my fifties. I found your video and am going to share it with many people. 😊many thanks

    Thanks Matt, I love FALL FORWARDS and BACKWARDS. So many people in the MS support groups I attend, have the EMTs on SPEED DIAL. One person called them 3 times in one day. Your instructions give me confidence that I will not break anything and wind up in a nursing home.

    I’m a klutz, so I keep really high liability insurance and fall on other people to absorb the impact. I’m kidding. Honestly, these have been great videos, for I’m catching myself from failing more often these days. You should consider a video on bathroom safety, for falls in the bathroom generally generate the most damage due to their arrangement of hard surfaces.

      Ditto for me and volleyball. I was one of those "anything for the ball" types who would dive without hesitation. Decades later, my dog had a seizure on the tile and I slipped in his pee while rushing to his meds, lol, that landing hurt, but I landed perfectly and was only sore for a day.

    I notice with falling forward, the tendency is to brace with the back muscles of the body and the knees, however, to fall gracefully forwards we are better counterintuitively to send the knees forwards to concertina to the floor. Similar with falling backwards, the tendency is to brace with the front muscles of the body and hips, however, to fall gracefully backwards we are better counterintuitively to send the hips backwards to concertina to the floor. And, of course, adding spirals into the fall allows all our muscles to play their part in cushioning the impact.

    As an amateur martial artist, I find it helps to put my chin directly on my chest when doing a back roll. If my chin is touching my chest, it doesn't require as much neck strength.

    I think the ability of the brain and nervous system to know where the body is and its response time have a lot to do with bad falls. It catches the person off guard and their brain can't respond to alter their body in time.

      Just like Matt encourages, it is worthwhile for us to practice the moves when we are not off guard. Then there is more chance to use this technique when we are off guard.

    A valuable learning for me was to realise I can send my hips backward. This requires released pelvis and allows the body to concertina downwards. This reduces the impact as the core muscles compensate as we travel downwards.

    What about falling backwards in a small space? I fell backwards in my bathroom in December and hit my upper back and head on the floor, just barely missing the side of the bathtub! Amazingly, my head is okay. If I had known this information back then, it might not have helped because there would not have been room to put my arm out to the side like that.

    • @AlexProudfoot1
      @AlexProudfoot1 Рік тому +3

      With a small space, consider spirals and concertina your body downwards. Then all your relevant muscles will be in play to support you on your way down.

    Hello, again - just commented on your "fall forward safely" video !!
    Question: What about falling sideways, which is what I did last year and ended up dislocating my elbow and fracturing my wrist - both now fully recovered, but 3 of my fingers - thumb, index, and middle finger are still not right, often feel no circulation, and thumb can feel as if locking, too. If you reply, thank you in advance! 👍

    • @lindsey9728
      @lindsey9728 Рік тому +1

      I'm not him, but I do know how to fall due to years of volleyball as a teen.
      When falling, you never want to use your arms to brace or catch yourself, they are no match for your bodyweight, gravity, and a hard surface. When falling sideways, keep the impact arm close to your body, straight up and down, tuck your elbow so your lower arm is facing forward, so upper arm straight and tight, elbow flat and bent so the side gets impacted, lower arm 90 degree angle forward and keep that hand out if the impact zone. Then try to change your landing to your back end and protect your head. Always protect your head first.
      Falling well is accepting it's going it's going to happen and using those milliseconds to protect your most vulnerable bones. I'm so sorry you had such a terrible injury, and I hope you recover soon.

My elbow and wrist are fully recovered, and I am so grateful for all the hard work I put in doing the several hours of exercises every day month after month after month - it was the only way to reach complete recovery! 😉 Thank you again for your kind words, I was very moved to find your comment on here! Take care! x
