  • In this video I demonstrate how to remove hair from a animal hide. In a survival situation, rawhide is an quintessential item to have in your posession. The fat and meat must first be scraped off of the flesh side with a simple flesh removal tool you can proliferate yourself from the leg bone of your animal harvested. The hide is then staked or racked in a frame and allowed to become dried as a drum head. The hair removal process can now commence.

Hello. Thank you for teaching. As I will be leaving society as quickly as possible, I have been learning to do things with ZERO conveniences, all from Gaia. Plz teach more skills. Fascinating.

Shiyo Petra! Great to hear from you again! I hope all is well where you are. So part of your problem is allowing your salted hide to sit in the sun. When you salt your hide, allow it to get "semi-dry" in a shady area. If you allow the sun to "sun-dry" the hide, the hide will lockup and never get soft no matter what. Every hide has fibers and when the extreme heat from the sun hits your hide for prolonged period of time before it is tanned, it will bond the fibers together and create a permanent lock that you will never get undone. For a "hair-on-hide", one will simply do the following:1. Skin the hide from the animal either case skinned or open skinned. 2. Flesh the hide(remove fat and meat with fleshing tool. 3. Allow hide to dry completely staked out on ground or racked in frame. Proceed to scrape membrane layer off of flesh side(side that was on the animal). 4. Slightly Rewetten the dry hide by warm water and Place the hide into your brain solution, hair and all and leave it overnight or one day. 6.Pull the hide out of the braining solution and proceed to "wring" the solution out of the hide. Wring it over your hide-solution bucket. One braining is good, two brainings are better. The wringing out needs to be very thorough as if the hide is very wet, the next step will take longer. 7. Re-rack or re-stake your hide and proceed to start "stretching" the fibers. You can do this with the end of a hatchet for small game or the end of an axe handle for large game. Work the end of the wood over all parts of the hide doing it until the hide is 90% dry. 8. Remove the hide from the rack or stakes and proceed to work the hide over a rawhide string attached to a tree. Tie one end to the bottom and the other end above your head, keeping the string as taut as feesable. (A cowboy Lariot will work good as well or a strong 1/2" strong rope). Strech the hide opening up the fibers over the rope each direction. Now start working the hide back and forth over the ropem this will "bring up the buff" and help soften the hide. This needs to be done until completely dry Stretching and working it over the rope. If you get tired and need a break, place a towel on the ground, place the hide flat ond open on the towel. Roll the hide up in the towel and fold the towel over and place it into a plastic shopping bag. Tie it up and sit it in a cool place while you rest. This ensures the hide does not dry out too quickly. Now when your rested, get the hide back out and stretch those fibers. Continue working the hide over the rope. 9. Once the hide is dry and soft, it is time to smoke the hide. Smoking preserves the hide. If you do not smoke the hide, if any moisture gets on or in the hide it will re-harden and you will have to do all the work over again. Smoking also cures the hide and deters moths. 10. Enjoy your finished hide! Hope this helps friend!
