    While I loved Villeneuve's Dune, I did wish both Hawat and Piter had more screen time and more development. In particular, Hawat thinking Jessica was the traitor was completely eliminated. I know any film adaptation has to make compromises, but the Mentats (and the fact that Paul had received mentat training in addition to Jessica's BG instruction) received short shrift. Maybe we'll get more in Part Two.

      Completely agree. For me, the interaction among supporting characters was what made the book outstanding and each of them deserved their own spin-offs in my opinion. Every single character in the book was witty and intelligent and the dialogues between them was genius at times. But unfortunately Thufir, Piter, Gurney, Kynes were left hollow because of time pressure, which is a shame.

    I too was disappointed that so much of Thufir was not in the movie. I still think the movie was an amazing adaptation given the vast source material. I have been saying ever since it was announced that if anyone can do Dune justice on the screen - it's Denis Villeneuve. I personally believe Denis concentrated on the Bene Gesserit angle for part one so audiences that were not familiar with the story could understand how Paul was setup and set the stage. Fingers crossed for a directors cut. I know Denis does not do director's cuts, but this was a passion project for him so he may give us one where we can see all that Thufir footage that Stephen Henderson talked about in interviews. And here is hoping that Denis can shift to concentrating more on how Thufir and Gurney were able to work their angles in part two.

  • @sorokahdeen
    @sorokahdeen 2 роки тому +44

    Perceptive. Well-written. Very well-researched.
    Given all the action in Dune and the complexity of its character interactions, it is easy make the mistake of viewing Hawat as a character on the periphery of the story and it is good to have your writing to remind one that Hawat's actions after his being captured by the Harkonnens and given the residual poison, lead to actions that stem from Hawat's plans and (mis-) perceptions.
    it is interesting to note that Hawat is, if memory serves, so poorly described in the book that the decision to cast an African-American actor as Hawat appears not to have to generated the same degree of controversy that Liet Keyne's race-and-gender swap did.
    It seems a particularly positive idea given how popular entertainments like action movies and comic books tend to portray African American characters either as possessing great physical prowess (luke cage, the falcon) but not intellectual acumen except in portrayals that are often too cerebral for the characters to seem natural or believable (e.g, Mister Terrific, Shuri). Having Hawat simply being Hawat while being African American is a departure from both of those extreme trends.

      @jamesboulger8705 2 роки тому +1

      I really don't see why switching out Liet Keyne was an issue. It is not a major character and her gender/race doesn't bear as much to that character (unlike if you made either the duke or Paul a woman). The race of Liet is because they decided to go with a particular look for Fremen from Arrakis (of which Liet is). The actor who plays Thufir does a good job, as he appears to be very confident and command authority. This is in keeping with the character, as he is supposed to be a mentat that is envied across the entire imperium. He is one of the reasons Atreides are feared, because of their master of assassins.

    Thought it was the latent poison the Baron had introduced while still on Arakis that Thufir finally succumb to? Always thought that was slimy piece of business. He would only die if he stopped taking the antidote. I think Piter made it.

They could beat the training of the Imperial conditioned doctor but they could not break the Mentat training and Thufirs love for Paul.

    Hawat's plan was to drag Houses Corrino and Harkonnen into a mutually catastrophic war by encouraging the Baron's imperial ambitions and the use of the Fremen to counter the Sardaukar. He advised him to abandon Rabban in order to keep the Emperor's suspicions at bay. The Baron went with these risks because he was too greedy. By the time the Harkonnens had developed a sufficient force of Fremen soldiers, it would be too late for the Corrinos to stop it and both houses would be facing annihilation at the hands of the others' supersoldiers. So they would use nukes.

      @@kalebgonzales4009 The scary thing is even after 20.000 years in the future we still haven't found any intelligent "Aliens" yet although I'm aware they've found a structure that wasn't entirely natural. In the end, humanity is the only (known) race in the entire galaxy that has the capabilities of space travel and conquering other planets.
      Coincidentally it's also the reason why I found Dune to be much more interesting than Star Wars because its *probably* the most realistic depiction of what human civilization in the future would look like ignoring the crazy abilities the bene Gesserit have including Paul.

      One of the main themes of the series is the Golden Path, Paul Atreides' plan to rescue humanity from its stagnation. He never got to implement it, but Leto II did, and he scattered humanity far and wide throughout the universe, far out of the galaxy. The last two novels, Heretics of Dune and Chapter House Dune, deal with those far-flung chunks of humanity returning to the main galaxy,
      So yes, the story of Dune can be thought of as being in one galaxy, if you want to stick to the narrative itself, or the universe, for the whole scope.
      Dune is massive, especially once you get to the Era of the god emperor, but I wont spoil that for you. You really should read the novels.

    • @toddkes5890
      @toddkes5890 2 роки тому +1

      Dune Lore has the Great Houses only controlling 1-2 planets each, and each Great House has several Minor Houses that control parts of their planet. If you accept the Encyclopedia, then there are ~160 Great Houses.
      So math time: Assuming there are 200 Great Houses, a Great House controls 2 planets (Harkonnen controlled Giedi Prime, Lankiveil, and a temporary hold over Arrakis that shouldn't count), each Great House has ten Minor Houses that handle nearby system mining operations, that is 400 habitable worlds and 2000 worlds being mined. The nice part is that thanks to the Guild Heighliners these systems don't have to be all that close to each other. So you could have humanity spread over part of the Milky Way, but they are scattered very loosely.

    How did Thufir know in the end that Jessica was not the traitor? Did he do the math then and there before his death? Was it before, off screen? The misbelief of Jessica's role was such a large part of his sadness and character after the invasion. His sudden realization of the truth and suicide still strikes me as deflating to this day. And it became something of a sanctuary for people escaping the wars and Jessica eventually reconciled with the sisterhood and started a school in the palace for young sisters.
