Wow!! Talk about wanting to shed a tear or 2!! A trip down memory lane!! The music in this encyc always comes back to be at sometime in my life. .. .hence the reason why Im here!! Thank you!! 1996 1997 memories :-)
Thank you very much for uploading. I loved this encyclopedia when I was 10 y.o. DK did a great job. It's been 20 years ago, a lot has happened in astrophysics and cosmology, it would be great if they published such a beautiful encyclopedia again in a new edition. Wouldn't it be great to have such an encyclopedia on computer science? Thanks again!
***** You are very welcome and I agree with you. DK Multimedia published a lot of great educational software during the 1990s. Unfortunately, the company publishes only educational books nowadays. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed the video.
This hits me right in the nostalgia. The selection of soundtracks were just magnificent. It is a shame that there are no long form ambient versions of them.
It took me for 15 years to find this program and I've never forgotten about this program's image since i was 5. I'm 20 years old now. Thank you so much for having this video and I'll never forget today until I die. I'm so happy and almost crying 😭
The developers definitely did something right with this. Even though I was too impatient as a kid, and only sought the games that were part of this collection, it remains as one of my more vivid childhood memories. Its a bit funny really. It is only now, over two decades later, that I've begun to appreciate what they tried to teach.
I still have my CD of this (and am not getting rid of it), but can do nothing with it, as Windows 64 Bit operating systems don't support 16 Bit programs any more. I wish this game had a DOS mode, so I could get it running via DOSBox, but unfortunately it was Windows software. I loved the moon landing mini-game and (if I recall) the mini-game where you put a Saturn V rocket together.
It took back to my childhood. I used to stare the night sky as a result of suffering from neck pain. I still have my childhood telescope and books on astronomy. I ended up being an architect but this astronomy stuff still drives me crazy. Man, it's nostalgic. I've this CD with me but I can't run it on modern computers. Listen to the music; how deep and captivating is the feeling. Just couple of months ago I learned that we can watch Andromeda with binoculars. Isn't amazing? Thanks for this meaningful contribution which makes a lot of sense for kids of 90's.
Joseph, what a lovely video, considering the fact that I have just reinstalled this software TODAY :D I will make a video from it, it is in a different language than yours :)
First time I really learned about cosmology, astronomy and space programs was from this software - and I use to be completely bewitched after learning all those amazing things. And it also had a very good star chart which showed exact sky events in the past, present and future. It helped me to first time to track and watch the Saggitarius constellation - and I also caught Saturn by its help with my children's telescope. And the music is just amazing. I wish someone can revive it again for both windows and mac.
I had all of these when I was younger. They helped me take up a love for science which continues into university for me. Just curious, what do you use to capture the gameplay footage? I'm keen to try these for myself
Julian James replicated the star dome in his iPhone app, Planisphere. I'm not suggesting for one moment that he used the same the code, but he was a developer on the original DK CD-ROM.
My childhood :') Damn, the song from the star dome makes me cry. Thanks to this CD I wanted to study Astrophysics since I can remember. Sadly, I'm just an electromechanical engineering student.

+Joseph Smon I think I saw an updated 2.0 version somewhere on the net. It would be great if somebody could dig more information on that
The time when programs like this were so engaging, god I loved this one and others like mythology. Memories!!!
I thought I had explored everything when I had this game, but there's so much I never realized was there

I remember this game. Never could get that damn lunar lander to touch down intact.

I remember when I was a little kid watching Magellan's view of Venus, it was one of the most haunting things as a kid.

DOSBox can run Windows 3.1, and this game supposedly supports Windows 3.1. I haven't quite gotten it to work in DOSBox yet, but planning to try.
Use VMware emulator.

Surely, this was rly 97' software :D
I would do anything to back in time. I use to sit down and go through this interactive encyclopedia long before AOL took over my computer consumption.
I had all of these when I was younger. They helped me take up a love for science which continues into university for me.

Oh man this was my childhood. I used to spend hours in the star dome just listening to the music alone.
