That 20 percent is extremely important, with only Zone 2 training you are never going to run faster.

Racing too much can be a factor but only if you're stressed about every race. Pros will race a lot but only have a few or even just one 'A' race, the rest arr kind of just extra training, not so much the physical but mentally getting used to racing, the taper, getting up early, the traveling, being in a bunch, the atmosphere, etc. Sometimes I'm more stressed with less racing because I want to nail each one.

Its more mental because most average punters thinks they are pro athletes when they are not.

He trained zone 2 or his zone 2? 155 was his top limit of zone 2 as he has stated. That would wreck 99% of people at his volume of training. Very interesting and makes me wonder. Can we train in zone 3 and get faster. It worked for him.

He was 25 at the time, likely with a max HR of around 200, so 155 would be 77% of that. It's well documented that aerobic threshold (top of zone 2) occurs around 77-80% max for well trained athletes, so firmly in zone 2.

Well theres a reason why he is a pro and is not great to copy what pros do yeh? This is something most age groupers cannot comprehend yeh

@@jacklauren9359 Not so sure about others but I do find most age groupers I know don't train hard enough to hit there goals. I myself train in zone 2 for 85% and mix in faster stuff for the rest. Works for me but thinking I could cut the volume and train in zone 3 mostly. Really I have no idea :)

@@SevansDog-ju4fb nope, but regardless of your max HR drop it wasn't his zone 2. His max was about 195. Do the math and don't take my word for it. I'm 57 and my max is 184 and has dropped a few beats the last decade. That is normal for high volume endurance athletes. Our max drops very slowly.

@@SevansDog-ju4fb cool - what I'm saying and always have been saying is that Paul is not training in his zone 2. My zone 2 had nothing to do with my original post. It was in regards to Paul who trained in zone 3. He used the Maf method ( 180-25(age)) which is 155. Maf training is brutally hard for most younger elite athletes if followed strictly. For me zone 2 is easy but as I get older Maf training is now Zone 2 but in my 30's it was zone 3. Wow, that is confusing :)

Is that a secret weapon? I thought in the meantime everyone knows this for years now?

Not beginners. Beginners just go out and run as fast as they can every time.

@@richardmiddleton7770everyone other than beginners knowing something doesn’t make it a secret. In fact this is the first thing everyone cant’t wait to tell you. “SLOW DOWN”… It’s a meme at this point
