Martha Wash, Crystal Waters, Cece Peniston, Robin S., and Thea really made the 90s such a great decade for dance/house music. Glad to see them all still going strong.
I just got chills. I was age 20-25 then.
Everyone has heard at least one of their songs. Worldwide.
AND THEA AUSTIN....OMG YALL Im 46 THESE WERE OUR SONGS
@@sobreezymimi7622 I’m 45, and you’re so right.
Never forget one more singer who had gone too soon, Loleatta Holloway.
Martha is the voice of a generation. These ladies need to tour and cover each other.
Great idea
I know a dance diva tour .
I hated those videos for featuring models over the original artist.
Martha stood alone in the eye of the storm.
No autotuned, no mixer to enhance an already voice of perfection, this is the legacy
People may not realize this, but those women in that room have the most powerful voices in the world of music..... clap back if you feel me!!!

"Rhythm is a Dancer" transports you right back into the 90s the seconds you hear it. Still holds up to this day!
Yes, still sounds fresh, and better than 90% of the stuff on the radio today.
Still my fav from all these! Such an awesome song.
That song gives me chills. That song does something to my soul. I listen to dance music to this day when I work out.
yes!
Oh absolutely. And I had some idea back then that thin lady was not singing that song. Same way they effed around using Jocelyn Brown's vocals on The Power. Anyway, props to Thea Austin!!
I remember seeing Martha Wash perform at a club event. They were having audio issues. She was so professional and just started belting it out with no mic. Her voice was so powerful that no one even notice. Then the mic was fixed and everyone was like "wow, what a voice!"
She just superbad!!! ❤
The ending gave me chills. The entertainment industry is still this way. It’s very hard for women to break through. These ladies are the groundbreakers and djs still rock their tracks thirty years later!💪💄
Women? How about black people…y’all always trying that feminist bs

I don't think it's hard for women to break through - I think it's hard for the larger ladies to break through - and it makes me angry - talent is talent - too many women singers not wearing enough clothes - skimpy outfits = anorexia in the teenage fans - don't get me started on the clothes horse industry -
Oh my goodness, hearing Robin S sing made me tear up. These women are amazing1
These ladies kept me dancing throughout the 90’s. They deserve their flowers.
You tell it!!!
Crowns, too!
house music in general deserve it's flowers... probably the must taken-for-granted genre in modern times...
💐🌸🌺
I grew up on R&B, funk, rap, and I was a mean-mugging football player. But I loved house music when I first starting hearing it in high school. 😂 Loved these ladies. Still do!
This was HISTORIC 🫨They are are legends 🪩🎉💃🏻 and their music will live on for generations 🫶🏼
Couldn’t agree more!! ❤️🎼❤️
This was at time when i realize I was GAY AS HElll. I wish these days would come back again. These ladies are on my place list where ever Daddy goes.
Beautiful and Historic 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Love for generations? Sorry, but no.
@@mwfmtnman who hurt you?
I was a fitness trainer in the 90”s-2000’s…These ladies were my go-to artists for the best workout music ever! My classes were always packed & this music had a lot to do with it! ❤
I don’t know how many cocktails & drinks I’ve spilled on myself (and others) dancin’ to these Titans of house music. 😂 The 90s was one big dance floor and everyone was on it. Ahh, the nostalgia!
😂
they need to go on tour together!
Yes! Agreed!
I'm definitely gonna be there if they do!
Excellent idea!!!❤
The Forum in LA is ready!!
YES
I owned a record store from 1999-2012 which were the best years of my life. I worked with each one of these legends at some point during those years. One of my best memories was doing an in-store signing with Martha Wash. She is a queen and I felt she should be treated like one. So I rented a huge over the top crushed velvet queen's throne from a Hollywood prop house for her to sit at while she did her autographing. When she came in and saw her throne, she was mortified. She said "I can't sit there... " she was so humbled and modest. We eventually talked her into it and what do you know, everyone loved it and felt she deserved it... just like I did! Good times.
How were the others
People would have been mad at you if you didn’t have a throne for her.lol😊
Aaawww, how sweet! That made me cry. I love people like that. Just existing in greatness. No fuss, no muss, just joy and talent!
So cool! What was the name of your record store?
I love that you did this!!!! 😍🥺
Martha Wash, Crystal Waters and Cece Peniston made some of the greatest records of the 90s (in Martha Wash’s case, 80s as-well and in Crystal’s case 00’s too) decade. Incredible vocalists. Martha really played them at their own game and made bank, as she should, off her music.
Loleatta Holloway
Excellent representation of such a great era in music. There were truly so many, if we could gather them all, we’d fill a stadium.
How about the 80s ladies of the freestyle era? Exposé, Taylor Dayne, Cover Girls, Lisa Lisa, Sweet Sensation, Nayobe.
They’re all still actively touring and performing and they so deserve recognition for coming up in an even tougher era for women in music.
Oh I'd be there
How did you forget Shannon?
Thank you for bringing up those ladies. So underrated.
OMG Robin S that VOICE!!!!!! Just DAMNNN. Sent chills down my spine! So much power and clarity in just a few notes!!!!! I love ALL of these ladies and all of their music sooo much!
Exactly!!! Such a strong voice
I watched her video of show me love in big orchestra ... I combusted
@@baileybutterfly320 I agree I love all the ladies though but her voice is amazing
I thought that they had cut to a recording. Her voice!
yeh beautiful
We need a concert with ALL OF THESE TALENTED LADIES💯♥
Even a vegas residency with all 5 of them is more than enough
@@stanbaloas much as I love them, don’t think they’d survive a residency. That’s too grueling for a person who hasn’t been performing constantly
@@Iris-zq5mq these ladies are pro and residency does not mean they will perform everyday. I think 3 times a week is already a lot. It is easier for them to do it there. No travelling from place to place..which is very exhausting
@@stanbalo no one goes to seen them now.. they aint gonna go see them in vegas
@@juanshaftpatel7488 i dont know how old you are but these ladies have hits and can make everybody dance. As a collective they can put on a great show.
This was so great to see! Martha Wash paved the way for so many in the music industry and she doesn’t get the recognition she deserves. Thank you for sharing your platform with these legends!
This made my heart smile❤ These ladies played a vital role in my high school and college years and I can't thank them enough. Glad to see them getting the flowers the absolutely deserve💐
These women are indeed legends and they broke glass ceilings in the club music/house music genre. 👑❤🔥
...And chairs!?
@nadiaddis1145
Ooh, you’re something. But everyone knows that meat on the bones makes for a fuller sound vocally. 💯
They really didn't. They are mostly one hit wonders... like DeeLite's Groove is in the heart. They are going out of their way to amplify their impact because they were black women.
@@nadiaddis1145 you are a nasty piece of work 🤮
I dont think they broke ceilings as much as they set the bar... house was a niche genre it's crossedover into the mainstream now but they kinda had those first hits that made it out of the clubs into houses and cars
OMG, i need the longer version of this interview. These women are legends, iconic powerhouses of the genre. The best that ever did it. Thank you gma3 for bringing these beautiful women together to share their stories.
That WAS the whole interview.

This brought tears to my eyes. Those songs are the soundtrack to my high school years. I remember one of the KC radio stations would play nothing but house music on Friday nights, so we would listen as we cruised. Didn't matter whose car we were in, we listened to that station.
Me too, sister!
OMG! I STILL listen to their hits like they came out yesterday! 'Way back in elementary' in the words of Tupac, I fell in love with house music and the love will NEVER die! ❤❤❤❤❤
no tears over here. confession: I felt it welling up shook it off. lol these women are absolute icons.
They (if they haven’t already) hook up with Farrell. Or the other way around..
*I.*
*HAVE.*
*GOOSEBUMPS.*
I am a club goer from the 90's, I still have CD's of all these talented and beautiful artists, they could put their voices out today and they'd still be chart toppers. ❤
This segment should've included Paris Grey, lead singer for Inner City. 5 #1 Billboard dance music hits and the house record "Good Life" is STILL played in dance clubs all over because it's MAGIC. If you really want to check out a mind-blowing house record you have to hear the epic cut "Can You Party?" (often mistaken for being titled "Can You Feel It?") by Royal House. OMG, your speakers will melt !
Inner City came out in 1988 with "Good Life" and were based in the UK.
No, Inner City is from Detroit. They just happen to have hits in UK in both dance and commercial charts(Top 3) before re-exported back to their own home country.
Don’t forget Melanie Thornton of La Bouche. Melanie died in a place crash near Zurich a few months after Aaliyah in 2001. I am now 50, and I grew up in Virginia Beach when all this music came out in the late 80’s and early 90’s. It captured me. I believe Lose Ends was a bridge from R&B to Techno Dance music. To this day, Rhythm is a Dancer gives me chills. To this day, many black Americans and other black people around the globe who know our music and artists never mention these important Black women to the world of music. To me, music is music. There is no race in music. I listen to heavy metal, hard rock, R&B, a little bit of country, Rap, Reggae, Afro Beats, and so on. I love music. It happened for me when I was in my mothers womb in 72. My mother said my father would put headphones on her belly and would play Jimmy Hendrix. I had no idea as a kid why I loved Jimmy’s music so much until my mother told me this story about 15 years ago. I love music. For a little bit of history, I actually grew up in VA Beach with Timerland and Pharelle Williams. We all used to hang out at Future Record in VA Beach. Future Records belong to Teddy Riley. I saw many stars before they started to come through future records.
So true. I just know Melanie would be sitting there as well
@@SaraShakur94 Absolutely. "Be My Lover" and "Sweet Dreams" are straight up classics of that era.
Awesome. Thanks for sharing!

I feel the same I'm a 43 year old white guy from Florida and I love 80s and 90s Latin Freestyle music. And when I tell people my favorite genre of music they look ate weird orake fun of me saying I should only listen to Rock, metal or country and I tell them I do plus I also live Hip Hop, R&B, dance and pop. No one should ever be regulated to a Specific kind of music just because of your race or color.

Legends, period. Crystal Waters was one of my introductions to house as a kid in the 90s. And who doesn't know Martha Wash's voice? All of them are true talents.
You have my total respect for giving these Iconic women space at YOUR table. Honestly, they should have a whole 10-part documentary. These are just a few of the women who had historic impact on dance music history.

Martha Wash, for me a legend of dance music. She has an incredible power in her voice. She has a long career, performed in the 70th as a background singer with the legendary Sylvester, after that she was one member of the weather girls, then singer by C+C Music Factory and Black Box.
This almost made me cry. I was never a fan back in the day but seeing them full of joy just got me moved. Have to salute their talents!😊

CeCe Peniston, Crystal Waters, Martha Wash, Robin S. and Thea Austin. Been listening to you ladies since the 90’s. 🤗
Still loving the Crystal Waters collab with StoneBridge's "Be Kind (S69 Classic Mix)" and Inaya Day's "Long Day (JX-C Mix) on the Fierce Angel's "The Collection" compilations.
Inaya Day, Shena and Diane Charlemange (R.I.P.) deserves a shout out too. With different house music compilations, those three do make alot of unexpected appearances.

These women are truly the GOATS!!! This interview should have been much MUCH longer!! 😭😭
As a singer/ songwriter, I feel like these are my "big sisters" in music. Life at HU would NOT have been the same without these ladies!! Sybil is missing from this group!
I’d replace Sybil with Ultra Naté.
Sybil, Ultra Naté, Jocelyn Brown, La India, Barbara Tucker, Lonnie Gordon, Penny Ford, Adeva, Paris Grey...then you'd have the FULL set of dance/house divas from the 80's and 90's...

La India 👑 🇵🇷 🔥
Jocelyn Brown 👑 💃🏽 🔥
It breaks my heart to hear that these iconic women are still not getting the respect and acknowledgement they deserve.
I CANNOT believe this incredible group of women is sitting together in this interview. These women are musical geniuses. For anyone too young for this era, you would NOT believe how groundbreaking these songs were in their prime. They're still brilliant, but man-- those were the days!!! :D
I’m only 27 but I know these lovely ladies voices because of the 99 cent store in my neighborhood in Harlem would play their jams! When I hear them, I get transported back to that 99 cent store. ❤❤❤❤
WONDERFUL! This interview just wasn’t long enough.
I had the opportunity (and the pleasure) of meeting Robin S and spending most of the day with her when "Show Me Love" was just hitting, and she was booked to play a set at the nightclub where I had a residency (Pleasuredome, in Niagara Falls, NY). I've worked with numerous artists over the years, and I can tell you that I've never met a more gracious and kind woman in my life, and as for that voice, all I can say is WOW!!!! She has an extremely rare gift, and her voice sounded even better live than it does on the record, where it sounds spectacular! Oh, one more thing, kids. There was no autotune back in the day. Just #PureTalent!!!
Your comment about her voice sounding better live than in recording - SOOOOO true.
I absolutely adore Martha Wash.. and too see her there with Robin S, Crystal Waters, Thea Austin made my heart flutter. I love dance music and listen to it everyday including these Queens who put the glitter and sparkles in my life with their music.
Please give us more of these Divas! A concert, tiny desk concert, anything please!
Tiny Desk plz!!!!!!!!! @NPRMusic
These phenomenal women sang the soundtrack to our lives..thanks for this story GMA
I wasn't I to house/club music, but these ladies deserve their flowers now for how they turned out parties back then. Their vocal range is mind blowing. Glad to see they are still around.
QUEENS!! They're so fly! Repping DC, Chicago, and the OG's. Thank you for all you contributed not just to "House" or "Dance" but to BLACK AMERICAN MUSIC.
This is historic, to have all of these lady legends of house music in one interview.👏🙌
These hits are still being played today on tv, in clubs, weddings, movies. It's about time these ladies got their flowers.
UA-cam as well.
I still play all of these ladies Music during my work day! Love it!
Women with talent who didn't have to show it all absolutely stunning and talented 💕
It's just too bad the discrimination against the heavier women then didn't allow them to be shown in videos. But I am glad they thrived regardless.
Been on tour with two of these sisters and they had big hearts and big talents and have influenced my daughters musically.❤❤❤
I grew up in the 90’s and I have all those beautiful ladies on my playlist.
I really wish there was more to this interview. I'm sure there is but they always cut things short for the viewing audience, especially with UA-cam videos.
I grew up in Japan from 89-95 (through high school) and danced my ass off to their music in the clubs as well as by myself with my Walkman/Discman/ MDplayer.
Ooooh, I WISH they would get together and give a an entire album 🥰😍🥰😍!!
The Iconic Queens of House: Martha Wash, Cece Penstion, Crystal Waters, Robin S., Thea Austin, are Legends! I've been waiting since I was a teen playing their tracks on my mixed cassettes. Patiently waiting these Iconic Queens receiving their recognition!
"Finally, Everybody, Showing them love, cuz Rhythm is (history) La da dee la dee da!!!"
These ladies need to be celebrated in every day music not just house !I have so many memories from 10 to being in the clubs that this music is apart of and when I hear these songs I’m transported in such a nostalgic way too the first time I heard these songs ,and what you felt the first time you heard each of these songs and the ladies singing it!
They are the pillars of the mainstream music that we hear now in today's music. Just quality because then back in the days it was more about the music, and entertaining people together at parties instead of interacting on their phone. Glad to be born in the 80s and raised and danced in the 90s
Me and my mom use to jam to all of those songs. I might have veen young. But i never forgot the music.
They should all tour together in 2024! Love them all!!!❤️
Growing up in a little town in distant New Zealand these women and their songs were heard valued and adored ❤

True icons. They need a whole documentary.
I’m glad I lived in the 90s with memories of when these songs came out. There’s nothing like the reaction of the crowd when these jams came on and made everybody dance together.

Omg the sounds of my tweenhood. Bless these women for blessing us with their voices
I remember hearing "Finally" when I was in junior high back in '92. It's still a great song. My kids (7 and 3) like it too
I would LOVE to hear new music from these ladies. It would go to the top of the charts in EDM music.
yeah... if they can get DJ David Guetta to stop putting out records that sample other peoples' hits! Dance music lost its soul in around 2016, it's very generic and soulless nowadays. The last shining light of dance music was Aviccii and he checked out.
Martha Wash was a beast back in the day. Much respect to all these lady's. Glad to see them still kicking it.
all these women have legendary voices; but I must admit, Martha Wash is the only one whose name I know by memory. So thank you for giving all of them all exposure.
