Ok, panamanian here. The video is overly simplified, but the gist of it is mostly right. Colombia actually did agreed to the construction of the Canal and signed the Herran-Hay treaty, but it was rejected by the colombian Senate because it gave the US sovereignty over the land for 99 years. The Hay-Bunau Varilla treaty (that no panamanian signed) later gave the land away literally for eternity. However, several national movements (mostly lead by students) pushed for Panamá to reclaim sovereignty of our country. In 1964 a group of students marched into Balboa High School in the Panama Canal Zone to enforce an agreement that the Panama flag should wave in all schools. They were beaten by US citizens and the Panama flag they were carrying was torn to pieces. This led to a national revolt. The US army quelled the revolt by deploying tanks and killing dissenters. This prompted the president to formally break diplomatic relations with the US (a first for any latin american nation with US occupation). This generated a huge momentum, and finally in 1977 the Torrijos-Carter treaty was signed and the transition back to Panama began. The whole process ended in December 1999, and since then the Canal has been operated solely by panamanians.

y'all wrong, you know anything Panama. And I say it, because i live in Panama Panama has won a millions because of the Panama canal, because it has an ampliation. You though that Panama only had the U.S. made canal? jaja The canal is what makes Panama the richest country in Central America. And Panama had its independence with Colomia in November 3 of 1903. Panama never was from the U.S. neither from France
I don't think you can tell the story of the Panama canal without at least mentioning the 1000 days war. The reason Colombia lost Panama was not only because the USA send a big army but because just recently we had bleed to freaking death in a civil war that Panama didn't want to be part of. At that point in history Panama even had engraved in the Constitution of 1886 about how the Itsmo would be ruled by special laws. It wasn't mainly that USA wanted a canal and basically divided a peacefull country, they took advantage of the inestability inside Colombia to do it.
@Kyle Farren it isn't though lmao, at least America doesn't let its own country be slaughtered by foreign invasion without helping it isn't that right Europe
@@justsomeguywholikeswater3566 huh? if you are talking about the World Wars the US barely participated in WWI and only entered at a point were the victors were pretty much decided, in WWII it was the Soviets who beat the Germans, the US mostly fought against the Japanese and only to liberate their colonies in the pacific. Funny thing in both wars the US sold resources to both sides of the conflict (yes, even to the Nazis).
@Kyle Farren Technically speaking, America is but also isn't an empire. Due to it being a federal and constitutional republic without a monarchy nor any form of imperial leader, the closest thing the U.S. has to a "emperor" is a president but emperors are normally born into an imperial family or have most power go directly to a single person. There are few exceptions where emperors/empresses don't fit into any one of those categories. The U.S. is much more akin to that of an empire as its closest historical counterpart; the late Roman Republic, specifically the Caesarian-Era Rome before the Civil War. Btw I'm not denying nor disagreeing with you on American Imperialism, I'm just being technical.
During the first attempt by the French to build the canal, thousands of french workers died to malaria. Americans fixed this (preventatively), which is why they successfully built the canal.
The “large part” was mostly flat soft land and they stopped construction after reaching the mountains because a bunch of people died and it would take too long to make it an open water canal so they sold the contract to the Americans and they made a lock and door canal over the mountains
It wasn't just to make him look great, Roovsevelt had recently read The Influence of Sea Power upon History by Alfred Mahan. It stated for a nation to prosper it needed to be protected by a strong navy with plentiful docks, refueling stations, and canals to drastically cut back on time to cross from one place to another
What they did to Panama is just like what they did to Philippine and Cuba. You help them gain independence and then you make them into your own territory/easy to control state. Why I said easy to control state, because Cuba was granted as a independence sovereign state, however the government of that independence sovereign state must do whatever the US say.
Has anyone ever heard of the "Fallacy of Oversimplification?" It's just that I'm taking a class on persuasion and some of these videos are getting a little way out there. @Pasha Staravoitau Okay, for example, the fact that they talked about black people getting shot by cops more, which isn't true if you actually look at the stats. Then, they try to defend the black panthers, who murdered policemen. Also, the entire world is full of countries that were taken over by war, but they treat the US like some sadistic country that should have stayed in Europe and let the native Americans live in isolation.
@@vortex_panther3476 the US definitely helped in WW1 and WW2, but in some other cases, they didn't help at all. Just because the former oppressed a nation doesn't mean that you can justify the oppression by the latter. For a time, we were almost imperialist. Getting involved in Vietnam and Cambodia and Indonesia was not worth it, especially Cambodia and Indonesia. Minus the cultural genocide of the (remaining) native Americans, and the Atlantic slave trade that we continued on with even though many other nations already stopped, we are not as bad as other nations. I would say that we are definitly better than the many fascist dictatorships in history like Nazi Germany, Soviet Union, China, North Korea, Democratic Kampuchea (Communist Cambodia), Indonesia, imperialist Japan, etc etc. As Americans its very normal to remember from our faults, rather than pointing out the faults of others in order to justify our actions.
Adam Ruins Everything isn’t so subtle about their leftist bias. I’m not trying to trash the entire show, but if there is anything related to politics being discussed, use the info as a jumping point to do further research.
The United States didn’t create Panamá, Panama was its own country but was allied with Colombia for protection from Spain, in return we gave them access to our resources. Idk where you got this info but it certainly isn’t true. We were our own country the moment we became independent from Spain, we just weren’t independent since we allied with Colombia. Know what you’re saying before you say it.
In practice maybe. But full on independence was not recognized by Colombia until the whole Canal affair was over. As far as Colombia was concerned, Panama was not an ally it was another territory within it's borders. And that was the problem in the first place.
Actually untrue, yes it is true *at first* Panama joined Gran Colombia for protection but then you wanted independence, and tried and lost it several times before this.
Fandom guy yeah but that isn’t the point, the thing is Adam states that the US created (Keyword created) the country of Panama to make the canal, but Panama already was its own country.

Everytime I watch one of these reanimated history episodes on adam ruins everything, I feel the need to binge watch Rick and Morty. The narrator is Chris Parnell, the same voice actor that voices Jerry Smith on Rick and Morty.
Colombian here but Panama was independent before Colombia's annexation. In fact, Panama decided to join Colombia voluntarily and after some years of decadence some movements wanted a voluntary independence (which technically they could've done if it weren't because there were so many whealty Panamenian elitists with high public positions in Bogotá) and those Rich Panamenians were happy of being part of Colombia.
The second part is sadly true tho. America betrayed those Panamanian movements making them think that they could become a totally sovereign nation and after some conflicts within the canal zone, America decided to make some treaties granting Panamanians living in the canal: - Citizenship in mainland U.S.A - Prioritized militarist protection if needed - Shared sovereignty
TheRealChen Panama became a country in 1821 gaining its independence from Spain. And we joined the La Gran Colombia so the Spanish wouldn’t try to reconquer the land. After that in 1903 we separated from Colombia

If I had a nickel for everytime Adam Ruins Everything comedically downplayed Theodore Roosevelt's many contributions to the US, and made him out to be a random mustached nobody. I would have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice. I've heard plenty of people talking about the corruption of the Robber Barons from US history and how they hoarded wealth from the people, but I have seen very few people talk about the fact that Theodore Roosevelt (a republican president) was one of the most important people involved in breaking up those absurdly large and corrupt businesses. That's just one example but I could list many more. He did a lot for the country. It's a shame to see it overlooked
When today's Repubs bring up Lincoln implying if not outright stating that the Democrats are racist, people should counter with monopoly-busting Teddy. He wasn't perfect, nobody is, but he identified himself as a progressive and backed it up.

Article XIV of the Hay-Banau-Varilla treaty: The United States agrees to pay Panama $10,000,000 in gold coins at the beginning of the settlement then an additional $250,000 nine years after the opening date. Title of video: How the USA “Stole” the Panama Canal... Because paying money for something is obviously stealing. Also, after counting for inflation, the cost of the land for the canal was $294,380,000 in today’s money. Money that was sent to Panama. And that’s just for the land. Panama also didn’t have to pay for the physical construction of the canal, while the US did. Panama also got to use the canal for the same lower fee as US ships. Panama has also tried to be independent from Columbia since 1831, and had been in an attempted revolution from 1899-1902, when the US was negotiating with Colombia still. Panama was given the Canal in 1999. Explain to me how this counts as stealing.
You forgot the part where before the US planned to put the canal in Panama, they tried to make an agreement with Mexico to buy land and built the canal there
But without the Panama Canal, the US would likely have never won World War II. The Pacific Fleet only exists because of the Panama Canal and Imperial Japan would have had an easy avenue to invade the country because of that.

Tell me, if the US were interested in securing oil through aggression, why didn't we just take control of the Iraq oil fields and start selling off the oil for profit after the fall of Saddam Hussein's regime? You USA-bashers are like broken records with your oft-refuted claims. The US is constantly saddling tax-payers with altruistic wars where we unseat dictators, pour billions of dollars into propping up the replacement government and then get nothing in return for the lives lost and the money invested. Frankly, I'd be much happier if we did take the spoils of war, but we don't. And if you were honest, you'd admit that. What did we gain from WWII? Korea? Vietnam? Desert Storm? Desert Shield? Operation Enduring Freedom? The answer is nothing. We gained nothing but perhaps a little increased security and a giant pile of debt.
So your saying it would have been better to leave trade going all the way through the Straights of Magellan? No? Then don't argue against the canal with out pointing out the alternatives and merits.
The canal was going to be built one way or another through Panama or through Nicaragua by America or by France (but America would have probably taken it over dew to the Monroe Doctrine). And Roosevelt didn't *just* build the canal so he could show off (as if he really needed to the was already very popular in the eyes of the american public) the main reason it was built was to CONNECT THE ATLANTIC AND PACIFIC. My problem with this guy is that he condenses topics into 5 minute clips and people blindly take his word without a second thought or looking deeper into the topic then turn around and speak as though they have authority on it.
I was being sarcastic a bit. It's ridiculous that this video would reduce this concept to something so biased and simplistic. Anti-American/ Anti-Western rhetoric.
this is exactly how i remember it from history class in 12th grade. And if im not mistaken, the french dude didnt have enough funding to build the canal so he asked the US to breakeven
This hole video is bull sh*t. The Panamanians could not have built the canal on their own. They had brighter the funds nor the engineering expertise to do so. Only America could have built that canal, I say that because the French tried and failed before us. We offered Panama independence in exchange for the Canal Zone and right to build the canal that would change the whole world for the better. Nothing about that is wrong and it's not "theft." Also, how come when any other country outside of Western Civilization wins land in war it's "conquest" but when we do it it's "theft." For example when the Zulu's conquered all their neighbors and founded their empire on a pile of their neighbors corpses. But when the British conquer other people's land it's "theft." Makes no sense. Another example is the Sioux Indians. They took the Black Hills from the Pawnee and other tribes through war fare, and massacre yet when America took the Black Hills it's considered "theft" of land by Leftists. Makes no sense at all

Just Killing Time i'm a panamanian, and all those things that you are saying there are true, all the people here in my country are waiting for a good president in the next elections in 2020, the people at the goverment are stoling our money and our public education is going bad to worse because of corruption, me as a teenager i'm really worried about what could happen in the near future, if you see our historical structures they look like if they could fall at any moment because the goverment actually doesn't care about it, yesterday we stood in front of the govern because they wanted to put elevate prices for electricity and if the prices of that go up the food, clothes and gasoline will elevate its prices too so we as a nation didn't want that they just want more and more of our money just because they are not satisfied with what they have and just like i said they just want ti stole our money, i wish that the president stop lying to us and gets his own medicine and i hope that the economy gets better too(sorry for my bad english but my first language is spanish)

Panama has won a millions because of the Panama canal, because it has an ampliation. You though that Panama only had the U.S. made canal? jaja
The canal is what makes Panama the richest country in Central America.

Funny thing in both wars the US sold resources to both sides of the conflict (yes, even to the Nazis).
what's with this american apologist they're still denying the obvious
This was actually informative. I thought he was just going to talk about the thousands that died to disease digging the canal
What has malaria to do with the canal though? The video is about correcting a false historical impression about how the canal came to be.
Curing malaria was decades later and has nothing to do with the canal. Although, many did die of malaria during the canals construction.
During the first attempt by the French to build the canal, thousands of french workers died to malaria. Americans fixed this (preventatively), which is why they successfully built the canal.

Has anyone ever heard of the "Fallacy of Oversimplification?" It's just that I'm taking a class on persuasion and some of these videos are getting a little way out there. Yeah, this show is becoming some socialist teacher.

Go back to Columbia. Talk about looking a gift horse in the mouth, sorry we rented some land for 100 years after we freed you from Columbia, sorry independence is such a burden. I apologize on behalf of my country for that giant money making public works project we made for you.
@obiwanbd1 Shows how much you know, people died because of the US army in a struggle to regain control over that land. Rented? The US planned to keep if it wasn't for the student protests that led to the Torijos-Carter treaties.
As an American I sincerely apologize for invading a land which we had no business in and Obiwan does not speak for all of us. As a human being what our government did was despicable and unexcusable. Our government does whatever it wants at the cost of brown and black lives.

but Panama was independent before Colombia's annexation.
America betrayed those Panamanian movements making them think that they could become a totally sovereign nation and after some conflicts within the canal zone, America decided to make some treaties granting Panamanians living in the canal:
- Citizenship in mainland U.S.A
- Prioritized militarist protection if needed
- Shared sovereignty

Article XIV of the Hay-Banau-Varilla treaty:
The United States agrees to pay Panama $10,000,000 in gold coins at the beginning of the settlement then an additional $250,000 nine years after the opening date.

So your saying it would have been better to leave trade going all the way through the Straights of Magellan? No? Then don't argue against the canal with out pointing out the alternatives and merits.
But the video said the canal was built just so the President could show off.
We offered Panama independence in exchange for the Canal Zone and right to build the canal that would change the whole world for the better. Nothing about that is wrong and it's not "theft."
Also, how come when any other country outside of Western Civilization wins land in war it's "conquest" but when we do it it's "theft." For example when the Zulu's conquered all their neighbors and founded their empire on a pile of their neighbors corpses.
