- 1964 Chrysler Imperial is not a Chrysler?
Yup not a Chrysler. Chrysler was trying to make a stand alone brand to compete with Lincoln and Cadillac. So the Imperial was to be it's own brand.
So is this car as good as the competition, like Lincoln or Cadillac? Some say it's even better. No expense was spared in the construction of this car.
It's large, heavy, quiet and comfortable. It has all power feature you could imagine.
I was an exclusive automobile. These car were built for specific customers IE: Ordered from the factory. Each car was built for a specific client. This car was made for Florence Henderson.
It's one of 922 Crown Convertibles made in 1964. The cost of a base model is almost 6000.00 dollars. That's crazy money in 1964 when an average car cost around 2500.00 dollars.
Why so expensive. In this veideo I'll show you why. Give you a brief history. Show you all the cool facts and features of the car.
See what power and prestige in America was all about in the 1960's when the Big Three ruled supreme.
Thank you for tuning in.

In my opinion, there was no better interior design than the 1964 imperial, simply the best, the attention to detail and craftsmanship was second to none; even Cadillac could not match it , Lincoln closer. Cadillac was a common example of affluence, while Imperial represented extraordinary, taste class, and refinement!
Back in the late seventies a friend of mine had a 1961 in black. We called it the Batmobile.
This one is Beautiful. Spectacular automobile. I would love to have one. Thanks for sharing.
Want to have your mind blown? 🤯 this vehicle's MSRP was 6k in 64, which is roughly 59k in today's money.
Now look at what you got in 1964 for 60k. A hand build vehicle, built specifically for you, to your specifications, with a laundry list of options... VS a run of the mill BMW 4 series, or a pick up truck. With a handful of options, many that are forced on you as a package. And hopefully, those features are not locked away behind a subscription pay wall.
Auto industry really went to hell in a hand bracket.
I couldn't agree more.
( respectfully, hand basket.)
That is correct. Imperial was it's own brand within Chryco.
Beautiful Automobile. 1964-1966 Imperials are a personal favorite of mine! You produced a great video!!!
Thank You for the kind words my friend
Tremendous lineage with this vehicle - Ms Henderson was indeed a classy, successful young 30yo when she special ordered it. Most inspiring and interesting history, thanks so much for the post!
Thank You!
In my senior opinion, it's pretty freaking awesome dude!
I've always loved these creampuffs 👍
The 1966 Imperial shared the same body, and of course, that included the same wrap-around windscreen. The 1967 Imperial featured the next generation windscreen.
"...shared the same body..." with What?
@billmcdevitt1298 1957-1968 Imperials shared no body parts with any Chrysler.
@billmcdevitt1298 Nope. I refuse to continue mental battle with an unarmed adversary.
@billmcdevitt1298 Do I own one what?
@billmcdevitt1298 Chrysler was unibody since 1960. Imperial was a body on frame until 1969.
Absolutely stunning in every aspect.🇺🇸👍 You had great taste Mrs. Brady! 💕
Just got one today that has been parked in a garage since the 80,s and it’s a convertible
Congratulations!
1966 was the last year for the wraparound windshield. The first year was 1957! Same windshield, same cowl. The power vent mechanism was purchased from General Motors.
Awesome! Good stuff
@@troykane Troy, glad to help! Chrysler registered Imperial as a separate marque from 1955-1975. Before and after that period, Imperial was a higher-trim New Yorker. 1964 was the last year of the pushbutton Torque Flight transmission all across the Mopar line. The buttons first appeared in 1956. 1955 Mopar models had this weird little lever sticking straight out of the dash.
Carol Brady once owned this car! How cool is that?
I have a Royal Turquoise 66' Imperial Crown Convertible. White interior. ALL options. In the same condition as this one.
I had a 1964 Imperial Crown 4 door. I loved that car. I’ve never had a car that drove as well. I’ve owned two Rolls Royce. This car tops them all. I have a 1970 Oldsmobile 98 convertible now. I want an Imperial convertible but I haven’t found one that I could afford at the time I found it.
I had a 1966 Crown 4-door hardtop and I concur with your comments.
64 Imperial Best looking year in the 60's
A full Elwood Engel design
Fantastic looking Imperial. Great work.
Thank You!
Always loved those old Dodge's, especially their rag tops.
All of the Mopars 50s-60s. 👍
This would be the last year for the push button transmission selector. Starting in the model year 1965, Chrysler began equipping their cars with shifter selectors, same as their competition. Driver education people was active for identical automatic transy selector controls on all cars.
Interesting
Beautiful car. Thanks for sharing. I remember our high school principal having a four door Imperial, I though it was so cool 😎
Beauty of a car! Loved my 69 Imp LeBaron !
Thank You!
Great video! Love classic cars like this. And for the record, the purchase price of $6000 for this car in 1964 is about $59,000 in 2023 dollars (according to Google on-line search results).
Awesome thanks for the research
Beauty, i have a 63 Crown 4 door hardtop. 46 k original miles, great land yaught. gets lots of looks...
Awesome! Thanks for the comment
Simply Beautiful car, your restoration job is amazing! I love what you've done. I wonder how long Florence owned it.
Thank You! I don't know how long she had it.
The 64 Imperial Crown Convertible is simply the most fabulous convertible ever made by anyone at anytime. It is a slap in the face to my Eldorado convertibles and my Rolls Corniche. I own all of them, so I know.
If you ever have an opportunity to ride in one….take it.
This particular car is magnificent.❤
Awesome! Thank You!
ONLY the transmission and some engines were shared with Chryslers.
NOTHING MORE!
great info, i have two of these , one coupe and a convertible both are the same factory color
Wow, very cool!
Gorgeous Imperial!
Thank You!
Its a shame what happened to Chrysler their Imperials wore beautiful.
Unfortunately Chryslers attempt to compete with Lincoln, Cadillac (and what was left of Packard in 1955) never quite pushed it to the top in spite of being (as advertising called it) the INCOMPARABLE Imperial. Truly love these LAND YACHTS, a monument to OTT excessive American chromed luxury of the time! Unfortunately, a time we will NEVER see again. For me, the 61 LeBaron was the pinnacle, with limo like roof and fins actually an inch or two higher than fabled 59 Cadillac. Engels 64 and up were also beautiful, but not quite as spectacular as Exners fabulous finned fantasies. Sad to see what little remains of Chrysler and all autos.. For me the last REAL Chrysler was 80s RWD Fifth Avenues.
My Dad was a Mopar guy he had a Fifth Avenue.
@@troykaneI had 83 and 85 Fifth Avenues both silver with matching plush velvet interior. To me they easily held their own with subsequent Town Cars and RWD FLEETWOODS.
Definitely the last real Chrysler, i have an 89 fifth avenue.
@@taylorsopko5807 I had 83 and 85 RWD Fifth Avenues. Great luxurious, comfortable and with Formal roof provided a luxury vehicle which held its own with subsequent Fleetwoods and Town Cars!
One of the nicest looking cars ever!
Beautiful color.
Thank You!
Beautiful automobile...excellent job.
Thank You!
Considering minimum wage in 1964 was $1.25 an hour, $6,000 was small fortune. Imperial put Cadillac and Lincoln to shame.
Beautiful car!
Thank You!
Great work. What a beauty!
Thanks!
That is a lot of car for Florence Henderson. Any idea how long she drove it for?
I do not know
plus full gauges!!! not idiot lights
Are the seatbelts were standard on these cars? My family has a 64 imperial crown sedan, and there are no seatbelts in the car! How could this be?
I don't know, maybe they were an option?
With that mother-in-law crack, I don't think the host will be getting a fruitcake this Christmas! 😁
😅
absolutely beautiful
Thank You!
Just beautiful
Thank You!
Masterpiece!!
Thank You!
The 1966 Imperial was the last American automobile with a wrap-around windshield. _(1/1/2023)_
Thanks for the info!
Gorgeous!
The Vermont plates look as if they were meant for the car. They match the color of the car - and the last two digits happen to be "64"! Coincidence?
So huge and so wide but only one outside mirror! Drivers used to have much better peripheral vision…
People could drive. And had some common sense
Is this car for sale?
absolutely gorgeous
Thank You!
Your title state it's "not" a Chrysler - agree. Then you go on to state "Chrysler Imperial" multiple times in the video...
Well....Let's face it. It is a Chrysler.
@@troykane then how come they don’t call Edsel a FORD Edsel?
@@bk14nyc "Edsel" is an actual name, of an actual person. "Imperial" is more adjective than noun. It is too generic. Brands have identities that people identify with. The word "Imperial" has many negative and impersonal connotations. And it was a model before Chrysler tried to make people believe it was more special. The cars are pretty special, but the branding was empty headed with only legal papers filed. It had no dealer network, it had nothing separate from Chrysler. Nobody believed it then and it is not worth getting defensive about now. Chrysler gave up their charade, so should anyone really get very butt hurt? No.
Stereo system ?
Trying to be a Mopar supporter is like being a republican in south Chicago and all the criticism and lies you get from the Buick and Chevy guys. Funny thing it was so Chrysler who saved Buick. They hired him in 1915 cause sales were down to 60,000 a year. In two years he had straightened Buick out and got sales to 600,000. They can't stand that.
Awesome ❤️ 💯 👌
6:29 is that John Holmes?
Just think how many more would have been wrecked if they were allowed to enter demolition derbies.
Probably saved a lot of cars.
He admits, that the IMPERIAL was a standalone brand, (true) but he still calls it, a “Chrysler” Imperial. (false).
Big deal. And Trump said shithole.
It is AWESOME and BEAUTIFUL! Too bad Chrysler had been owned by Losers who didn't appreciate their history.
Mother-law😂
I am not getting this fully, I mean a Volkswagen Beetle that was made in Brazil is still a Beetle and if it was made in Mexico, is still a beetle. If Imperials were made were made by the Imperial car and corporate shenanigans llc, at a chrysler owned building, they would be and are Chryslers.
It's a Chrysler product, but not branded as a Chrysler.
Is a Lincoln a Ford? No. It’s a separate division of the Ford Motor Company, just like Cadillac is a division of GM, just like Imperial at that time was a separate division within the Chrysler Corporation.
