Your scope is mounted higher then the standard 1.5" above the bore. That is why your trajectory is higher then expected. An ar's scope is approximately 2" above the bore so pretty much a 223 is dead on at 100 and 200 yards. With a bolt rifle with 1.5" above bore same cartridge is slighty over 1" high at 100 yards to be dead on at 200 yards.
The reason it's that high,is because your scope is to high, the ballistics they're giving you is for a scope no more than an inch and a half above, yours is higher then that.
Yes you are correct. It has high scope mounts so there is enough room to cock the trigger with your thumb. Thanks for watching!
Part of the difference in where bullets were hitting and where the box said was the higher scope mounts. When they give those numbers its with really short mounts.
I agree thanks for watching!
Just a little advice.. you never take a cleaning rod and RAM it down the muzzle. You clean a rifle barrel by pushing your cleaning rod from the breach to the muzzle
Barry, you were taught the wrong way to clean a gun barrel and I will prove it to you. Not all guns will brake open like this CVA. So on regular guns, it is impossible to start from the breach without putting the cleaning rod in bind. I've been cleaning guns for over 40 years and not one time has it hurt the barrel or caused any kind of disarray. But you are correct on one thing, you don't RAM it down the barrel. You gently push the cleaning rod down the barrel like you see me do in the video. Thanks for watching!
No not all guns break open like the CVA scout.. a bolt-action rifle, you take the bolt out, and push the cleaning rod from the breach to the muzzle. A break open single-shot is even easier. You push your cleaning rod from the breach to the muzzle so that you are not harming your crown. And I was not taught wrong how to clean a rifle. I've been doing it for over 40 years myself. By starting at the muzzle and pushing your cleaning rod in that way you can damage your crown of your barrel, which can lead to an accuracy of your rifle. Ask anybody that knows anything about cleaning a rifle
@@barrycarrick1920 There is only one way to clean automatics and lever actions. You start from the muzzle. Either way, you have to use common sense and not damage the crown of the barrel. I have no problem with starting from the breach, but like I said all guns can't be accessed like that.
Another way is to use a bore snake type swab to clean the barrel that way you don't have to deal with cleaning rods rubbing against the crown or the rifling near the muzzle. You can clean any rifle action with a borne snake, and you can make your own out of cheap rope or twine and some braided fishing line. You can save money on gun cleaner by using Walmart carb cleaner inside the barrels.
Yes sir that will work. Thanks for watching!@@PassivePortfolios
... nice shooting ! ... you can't believe the stated muzzle velocities and other ballistic data on ammo boxes ... you need to chronograph the ammo yourself to get the true velocities in YOUR rifle so you can have a true baseline to start from
Nice job Trent. You did an excellent job of explaining the procedure you used to sight in your 350 Legend.
Thanks Robert, Hopefully I get to see what these bullets will do to a big buck sooner rather than later. Thanks for watching!
Good data, thanks! -W. Liggett
Thanks for watching!
Great editing! Very fluid and good explanation
Thank you kindly mam'. Thanks for watching!
another great video Trent!! Nice scope as well! E
Thanks Ellis! You hold the fort down over around the mighty Mississippi!
I wish someone made an mlock rail for it. That with a wood stock, mount an ir laser for night hunting, would look super cool and be pretty practical imo
Love my vortex
... why would you clean a break open rifle from the muzzle end especially without a centralizer to keep the cleaning rod from rubbing up against the crown and ruining your accuracy?
That's why you always sight in farther. Your bore to scope axis can make a huge difference in your 25-100yd impacts and the ballistics calculator is just a reference point. The higher your scope sits the more changes you'll have in impact. Looks like groups got much better.
I have some 140 grain - fastest on the market. I plan on doing a video. It's been really hot lately and I have not made it down to the hunting property.
Scope height can really change where it’s hitting a different ranges. Measure the center of the bore to the center of your scope and use that in your calculations. Looks like you’re at 2 inches or so. If you’re zeroed at 25 the bullet is raising that 2 inches to meet your scope in only 25 yards so it’s on its way up. It’s going to continue that rise for quite a ways so that’s why it was high at 100. The best thing to do is actually get out and check it like you’re doing
Yes sir they can. I've got to test another round soon if it will cool off a little. Thanks for watching!
Exactly. It looks like a 50mm objective lens on the gun, which raises the center of scope in relation to center of barrel. So that means to hit your line of site dead on at 25 yards, the angle of the bullet travel is steeper than it would be if you had a forty millimeter objective with lower scope mounts. Hope that makes sense. My dad explained this to me when I was kid. He drew it out on graph paper and it made perfect sense. Google “how scope height affects trajectory”. So you will have different trajectory results with that same rifle and ammo, if you went with a 40mm objective lens and lower mounts. Thanks for the video. Im hoping to get a 350 legend for my wife soon. 👍🏼
@@seancotten8076 Yes sir it makes a difference for sure. Thanks for watching!
Great video as always Brother. I didn't know nikon stop making scopes. I love my nikon scopes.
Yep I know it's a shocker! Leupold is also good. Thanks for watching!
I was using a Bushnell 3-9x40 scope on my rifle in 350 Legend. I went to the range one to sight in a little bit better the crosshair broke. I put my cheap CV Life on there it never failed me. Bushnell sent me another scope after that.
I've always used Nikon scopes my entire life and had great luck with them. Would you believe Nikon isn't making rifle scopes anymore!? Thanks for watching, God Bless!
You're a good dude Trent! Sup!
Sup Ellis! Pumping out one quality mount after another - Peace!
Im shooting the exact same gun with the bear creek ballistics 140gr ballistic white tips. Sighted in at 100 yds and its an absolute tack driver
I have those same bullets as well. I'm excited to shoot them, but I have not done that yet. Thanks for watching!
nice video thx
I appreciate it. Thanks for watching!
I have the stainless/black version w a Vortex Diamondback 2.5x10x50 on it (looks like we’ve got similar rigs). I had good luck w the 180g PP. just shows you different guns/shooter’s different results. Mine was effective last fall on whitetails
Very true. As long as it works - thanks for watching!
While Leupold scopes are assembled in the US the lens are usually outsourced. China for their less expensive models and Japan for their upper tier. Vortex is much the same.
All we can do is support the US and buy things here. It seems just about everything we buy here lately is from China. Bummer! Thanks for watching!
@@TrentGunnellGeorgiaExposure thanks for your reply. Been eyeing a CVA Scout in 350 Legend at my local store. Been sitting there for months, calling my name. 😆
With the leupold vx dont you have the CDS dial? Just zero at 100 and then see what it does at 25 and 50.
Yes, gun needs to be around 2" high at 100 yards.
@TrentGunnellGeorgiaExposure I have the ruger american go wild with this scope and I have it dead on @ 100. Then turn my dial to 200 and can hold a 1 1/4 group.
@@jacobthompson7456 10/4 thanks for watching.
Nice range.
😂
Are you using the box velocity or the actual guns true velocity? You usually get results like this when the rifle is slower than the box advertised speed.
You didn't watch the entire video did you? lol. Yeah this is the CVA's velocity. The box says if you were roughly dead on at 25 yards, you would be 2.5" high at 100 yards. That wasn't the case with my gun. My gun had to be sighted in 1" low at 25 yards to make the rest of the ballistics correct.
I did watch the entire video. I even just rewatched the video to make sure I didnt miss anything but all you said was according to your ballistics several times. You didnt mention how you came to those ballistic calculations. Just kept saying the ballistics And you just answered my question by saying your using the info on the box.
@@thatguyfishingben4794 The velocity on the box was tested with a 22" barrel. My gun has a 20" barrel. That made a difference for sure. I have some 140 grain bullets coming. I plan on doing a video on them as well. Thanks for watching!
Cleaning from the muzzle??!!
I wonder if your results were caused from the 20 inch barrel as apposed to a 22 inch barrel?
It's really hard to say. I have some 140 grain bullets I'm going to test eventually. We will see. Part of it is the scope sitting higher. Thanks for watching!
Most likely just that huge 50mm scope sets higher over the bore than their test rifle causing more deviation between bullet path and line of sight.
@@williamiverson903 Yes for sure this is a big factor. Thanks for watching!
I'm glad it all worked out. Very nice 100 yard group.
Yes sir I can live with the results for sure.
i live in ill and i didnt think you could use a full copper jacket bullet i thought it can only be a soft tip are a ballistic tip in illiinois
The regs say no full metal jackets. "Full-metal jacket bullets may not be used to harvest deer."
@@KarlBAndersen, @tonybrooks6028 -These bullets are not FMJ - they are expandable. A full metal jacket bullet will not expand. That's why in most states they are illegal. Thanks for watching!

Sup Trent! From the original Sup Trent!!!
Sup Ellis!
you have to take in to account that scope is at leat one inch above bore
For sure. Thanks for watching!
What scope mount do u gave
To be honest with you, I have forgotten the brand. It doesn't say it on them either. 1' high mounts bought from Sportsman's warehouse.
Is it a nitrided barrel?
Yes
@@TrentGunnellGeorgiaExposure I've not seen that configuration. Looks nice. I was debating one in stainless awhile back, but if could find stainless nitride, that would be cool too. I know CVA does stainless nitride on some of the muzzleloaders,
@@Hill_Billy_Without_A_Hill Thanks, Yeah the stainless is cool. They are hit or miss trying to find certain ones in the CVA. Thanks for watching!
That little gun will shoot
Yes sir, thanks for watching!
Sup Trent???
Sup E!
If your hurting your barrel with a brass rod, you better change rifles.
No hurting barrels is allowed!
These are some of the ugliest rifles I have ever seen. Why doesn’t someone make a breakopen single shot that looks classic, elegant?
The whole thing is ludicrous if you think about it. The government gets involved and figures out a way to make their money. We as hunters should be able to shoot most calibers at whitetails. Each state decides certain rules and regulations, therefore forcing us as hunters to purchase their certain rifles that are legal. In the end, they all make money. But to reflect on what you said, a break open rifle is not my first choice to hunt whitetails. Thanks for watching!
Have you ever seen a Henry single shot? They look great. But there blue and wood. Accuracy is no better. These cva rifles are built like tanks, stainless and synthetic, with bergara barrels, looks aren't everything.
@@rayjones5282 Yeah when it's all said and done, if it will kill a deer - then I guess that's what counts! Thanks for watching!
Nikon riflescopes were pure trash. The shooting world didn't lose anything when they stopped making them.
Well. I loved them.
... you gotta use better scopes ... I won't go under $50 for a scope ... no junk for me
I have the same rifle as yours and I love it
I plan on letting that rifle eat this year Lord willing.
You gonna pack that shooting rest around with ya? Learn to shoot it is worth the effort! If that is all you can get out of that rifle accuracy wise with that rest keep it under 100 yds
