"Inflation" was not negative in June. The inflation rate was 0.1% lower than the previous month. It was 3.3% in 2024-MAY. It was 3.0% in 2024-JUN. Now you might be saying, "Wait, what?" That's because the headline of "0.1%" is because analysts were expecting inflation to be "3.1%", so when it was actually "3.0%" the headline became the "0.1% lower" that tripped Pakman up here.
(1:25) You're looking at "consumer price index" percent change, not "inflation". Consumer prices also happened to be down 0.1% month-over-month, 2024-JUN. Prices and inflation are not the same thing.

The problem with deflation is not so much, "I will wait because it will be cheaper." It is the fact that the company producing the goods has a smaller profit margin and therefore makes less money on the product. Because they are making less money on the product, they may be forced to lay off their workforce.
@kevinmichael9482 I literally said that in my first sentence, but in reality, it doesn't happen as much as you think. Consumers don't hold back for long. If they see a drop in the price, they will buy it. That only applies to wants, not needs.
The smaller profit margin is what kills the economy. You can't sell goods to break even or at a loss.
@kevinmichael9482 The Great Depression experienced runaway inflation, not deflation. Ike was the last president to experience measurable deflation. 2020 saw deflation early in the pandemic, but it was knee-jerk reactionary and the reason we saw runaway inflation in 2021 and 2022.
The thing that's really funny about gas prices is that it shows that they down about 12-15% year over year. Most gas prices in my area are really not that bad, being in the low to mid $3 range for regular.

The problem with arguing economics to ordinary people is, they will always base their personal economy off what they are currently experiencing when going to the grocery store, getting gas, purchasing a car, trying to buy a home. These feelings of economic anxiety and the actual statistics don’t line up for regular folks, hence the perceived economic status takes precedent over the empirical economic data. Young people aren’t likely to care about this information if they cannot find a home themselves, thus, they feel stuck and don’t see a positive economic future. I’m glad to see these improvements, we just have to hope they translate into real tangible feelings, and hope people go to the ballot box this November to keep this thing going!
Not to mention there is no concept of what stuff used to cost, relative to today. It seems like largely prices returned to about what they cost back in the good old days adjusted for inflation, and stuff.

There is another much simpler reason also which is that companies don't want to lower prices. Deflation actually means a shrinking market which is why it's happening in Japan which has a shrinking population.

If prices today are below what they were five years ago, chances are you're not getting your necessary goods to survive because consumers have to buy *way* less into products.
We had deflation in 2020 because the supply increased so much relative to the declining demand that came with people staying at home pursuant to COVID.

I don't buy the argument for why deflation is bad. If you have more money than you need to spend in a given month, you can exchange it into stocks and/or bonds until you need the money, and that would give you the same disincentive to spend the money right away as if there was actually deflation in prices. You are generally allowed to and even encouraged to own appreciating assets. They just don´t want money to compete with any of them.

IIRC inflation is still at a fairly high 3% (2% is usually the Fed's target), but there is deflation in some highly specific volatile categories.
The whole schtick of blaming / praising Biden for the inflation rate is also kinda moot because the main guy in charge of controlling it, Fed chairman Jerome Powell, was put there by Trump and only extended by Biden.

Sure it’s great that inflation is declining, but the problem is that it doesn’t impact our wallets like it is. Inflation is the same as the stock market, it’s ethereal money. We need to see legislation preventing price gouging by Utilities, Grocery, and Gas companies to prevent shrink/greed-flation. That’s how you win the election. Not mentioning that inflation is down. People need to see it in action not just hear about it.
