I live on a lake, and the birds def still eat my fruit in mass. I tried the decoys & tape, neither worked, even took pictures of them lighting right next to them. Only way I could keep them out was netting, but it is just a pain to take it down & putting back up in between picking. Couldnt justify netting in an entire 2 acres, so just net the fruit in season. My papaw gave me some of the best advice though, "You just have to plant enough for them & you. Don't skimp." So I increased the production, and that seems to work haha.

My problem at 1200 feet up is the deer and gophers. The only thing stopping the deer from my grapes has been fencing but the gophers are something else. All of my new vines Im planting into wire baskets underground and it seems to be working so far.

I also find that wire baskets are effective against gophers but they have to be above soil line as well. That’s about the only way to grow certain crops. Forget about any artichokes in the ground or naturalized bulbs!!

Im in Massachusetts and the ONLY bird that is the pain in the butt is the catbird. They sound like a cat screaming. They even just eat the blossoms of blueberries before theres even blueberries. They dont even wait for berries. I tried everything. Tape, owls and netting. I can't seem to find netting with big enough holes that the huge bumble bee can get through so i have to leave it open until its all pollinated. Then i can net it. Its a pain those catbirds.

Flash tape tied to many branches of my peach tree worked very well. Lots of it and long strips. Had to untangle it every other day but it was worth it. Only lost a couple of peaches with bird peck marks. Had 2 owls like he showed but they only worked for a couple days till the birds got used to them.

I’ve had a really good luck using an owl decoy. I do move the owl around every couple of days and have had no problem with squirrels all summer long.
