How to Texture a Wall (7 options) Do It Yourself

Whether you’re building a new home or remodeling an older home one of the many decisions you have to make is what kind of texture you want to put on the walls. Texture can really enhance the look of your house. Just think of your drywall as a canvas to create the look you want for your home. Texturing is really easy and there are several different choices to create the look you want. Check with your local home center and choose the right texture mix for you.
Sand Texture
As the name implies, this mix comes with sand mixed in to create this texture.
Simply put it in a paint roller pan and then use a roller to apply it.
If you want your texture to be a little finer, simply add some water to the mix. This is going to give your walls a smooth, subtle texture.
Because of the sand, the texture is raised from the wall giving you a slightly three dimensional look.
After this dries, you can simply paint it any color you want.
Smooth Texture
Again, pour out a little bit of the texture into a paint roller pan and use a roller to apply it to the wall.
The difference between this and sand texture is we’re going to use a coarse napped roller to apply this texture to the wall.
This is going to give us a different look. Cover the wall completely with the texture.
Then come back with the roller and here’s where you can get creative.
If you push down hard on the roller you can get a smooth look.
Or if you lightly drag the roller across this texture, the coarse nap of the roller pulls it up off the wall a little bit and you get a different look.
Rough Texture
Again, use a coarse napped roller to apply this texture. And it, like the others, comes pre-mixed.
Really coat the roller as you apply this to the wall and cover the entire surface.
Then take the roller and lightly pull it across the texture to pull it off the wall and create a really rough finish. This gives you a deeper, more scattered textured look.
However, it’s going to be kind of sharp after it dries. This is not a good texture to put in a child’s bedroom or playroom because brushing up against it could scratch baby soft skin.
Sponge Stippling Texture
You can use smooth texture mix for this application, but since you’re using a sponge, add some water to the texture to make it more workable.
Put some smooth texture in a roller pan, then use a sponge to apply the texture to the wall. Depending on what type of sponge you use, you can create all sorts of patterns.
The sponge creates the stippling or puckered pattern on the wall.
And the great thing about this is that if you don’t like the pattern, you can change sponges or twist and drag the sponge to create your own custom look.
Crow’s Foot
This pattern is created by buying the crow’s foot applicator. It looks like a dust mop.
Once again, use smooth texture for this application.
Dip the crow’s foot applicator into the smooth texture and then apply it to the wall.
Just keep rotating the applicator around and push against the wall as you go to get the look you want.
Once you paint it, the texture really pops!
Monterrey Texture
Again, use smooth texture and a 6” drywall blade. You can also use a wider blade if you want, it just depends on your personal sense of style and what you’re trying to create.
Take the blade and scoop up some texture and apply it to the wall. You want the texture applied to be thick but not rough. Apply it to the wall in short strokes.
As you do, you’ll see little ridges pop up. This creates the relief you want on the wall and will give the wall it’s cool texture.
Once it dries, add some paint, some stain and then coat the wall with a finishing glaze and it gives you a rally expensive textured look.
Knock Down
To apply this texture you need a hopper gun, an air compressor which you can rent from a tool outlet or home center.
Once again, use smooth texture but you’ll need to add quite a bit of water to thin it out enough so it can be sprayed through the hopper.
Turn on the compressor, pull the trigger on the hopper gun and the texture is squirted or splattered on the wall.
The technique of applying this texture is called “splatter drag”.
Why? First you splatter it on the wall, holding the hopper gun 18”-24” away from the wall.
Then you let it dry for 15-20 minutes and come back with a plastic blade and drag it over the texture, this is called the “knock down”.

I get that fancy "monterey" look just taping my seams lol.
I'm dealing with old plaster and a lot of patchworking so this should cover a lot of the adequate but not so perfect fixes I did.
I like the knockdown drag out look, even if that does sound like a battle royale!
It's just called knockdown lol. But if you're trying to cover up some ugly plaster, you could just skim the whole wall with a large blade and regular drywall mud, and then sand down the highspots

Where I live if you wait 15 minutes the drywall texture would be completely dry and you would not be able to knock it down

This looks like exterior texture to me. Too rough for inside walls.
Thank you for this! I live in a pre-war with horrible walls. Layers of patches of paint jobs are visible. Texturing will hides these. How does a high-gloss paint finish look on a textured wall?

What type of roller did you use on the sand finish?
I’ve had to repair and attempt to match it several times and it looks horrible. It doesn’t add value to your home, in fact it does the opposite.

Yes. Sand lightly with 100 grit sandpaper. This helps the new paint grip or adhere to the wall..

Sand texture is awful
Everyone of these textures are 50 years old or more. They look like crap. Watch more videos. Orange peel, knock down and smooth wall are all anyone wants. P.S., she didn't do the knockdown right.
Moteray? No that texture is called "I don't know how to put down mud and I'm too lazy to sand".
And when you're done, that will the one and only time your wall ever be clean because you're never going to be able to clean that train wreck.

I love textured walls. So elegant and makes a home look expensive. I hate sheet rock and just painting it is dull and boring. Texturizing or wall paper is the way to go. IMO

Liked your video. You didn't mention how messy these procures are and how floors and so on should be masked off. Also there are spray cans of texture available at the big box stores. Expensive, but if it's a small area, might be worth it. Also Wagner makes an texture gun that doesn't require a air compressor and hopper. It retails under $100, and can be used over and over. Well I could go on, but my last comment is most drywall people charge $1 a square foot to repair, patch, texture a wall or ceiling. They do the cleanup. This might be a better alternative...

IF NOTHING ELSE that garbage she called "Monte Ray " is not a real thing. That's not a real texture. Thats what I end up fixing every time an old man thinks he can do drywall. If it's been painted, the fix is often tear the whole wall down and start over. YOU WILL RUIN YOUR HOUSE IF YOU TRY THIS BULL SHIT.

I like the knock down look because when its painted with semi gloss paint it look elegant. Textured walls looks good but it depends whats your decor. If your decor is boring modern flat smooth walls are good for you. Texture walls is nice if your house has arches in it.
I agree. And sometimes it just simply more practical. Texture hides bumps and bruises if the home has children or pets

Great video on texturizing house walls. We had a handyman type ruin our kitchen walls with plaster and then oversanding areas down to the metal....It going to cost us ADDITIONAL money and LOSS time now to fix it. Our kitchen walls were pristine....until he ruined them.

Lol so this painter I was potentially going to hire sent me this video. Don't know why I told him we have orange peel texture. My only question was is he applying it by a can or with a hopper gun? now I know who not to hire
I saw online, some people add silica sand directly into their exterior wall paint can and it is ready to use on the walls after stirring it up really well so the sand does not settle at the bottom.
Is it a good idea to do that I mean if I want to give texture to fiber cement walls should I just add some white silica sand directly into the paint and use it and that is it?

Texture is so dumb to match when having to do a repair. Why can’t the walls just be walls no texture.

I'm a 45 year taper with thousands of jobs completed, according to my records around 1500 in the last ten years alone, my advice hire a pro, if not you'll pay for it on the resale of your home, it's not easy to get a nice texture, can't tell you how many jobs I've fixed for new home owners that loved the house but not the drywall, could cost you thousands in the long run
Knockdown texture
A bought a box of the dry powder wall texture from home depot (not the premixed stuff), and I'm wanting to do the monterey finish. Any idea what the ratio of water to mix should be?

Wonderful video. We live in France (but not yet totally French speaking :) ) and we had some electrical work on our walls wherein the the electrician had to take some ridges and fill it with plaster which made some parts of the textured wall flat. I had no clue until I saw this video how its done. Let me try.
