Three points to suggest: 1. When the texture is BONE DRY - a light prime coat is advisable - preferably an oil based
KILZ spray - because latex paint on bare new texture will liquefy the water based texture. ALSO - 2. That texture comes in water based (where a primer is advisable) OR an oil based texture - which dries much faster and you have to work quickly knocking it down and no need for priming.
3. Often, when you buy these sprays, they can have a weak spray if they are too cool. IT is great to put the can in a pot of HOT tap water to warm it up - keep it in for at least 15 minutes - lifting and shaking the can a few times during the warming process. This really is a fun art! (35 yr handyman here.) Thanks Leah!!
Heating up the bottle made a HUGE difference in consistency. Thank you!
What if I live in CA & oil based paint is illegal? 😢
Now this is how u make a demonstration video very detailed. And absolutely no unnecessary off subject talking. I'm most definitely subscribed now
It is one thing to be able to do something, and another to be able to explain effectively how to do it. Leah definitely has excellent communication skills to be be a good instructor.
This is one of the best teachers to give very detail instructions, not only speaking clearly but also all actions step by step, therefore I can follow it to repair a damage part of my house ceiling. Five stars!
I am inspired. We moved into a house with orange peel walls and a lot of sloppy nail hoke and other repairs that are..annoying. after seeing this, i am ready to give patching things up a try. Thanks
It's uncanny how your videos always end up being the best tutorials on UA-cam. For me, it goes like this every time. I have a repair I need to make, I watch a few other videos, I find yours, I do what you say, and it works every time. You really should be on TV too!
thanks, Phillip!
So glad I found this, putting the orange peel on this weekend doesn't seem so daunting. You are a true craftsman and an even better teacher. Thank you!
Probably one of the most detailed and well explained clips on this process that I’ve seen. Thank you!
" I Can Do This!" This video is awesome. I love the way you explained then showed with finer detail! You spoke clear, your instructions were easy to understand! I really wanted to take a moment to recognize you and thank you for such an excellent video. Thank you! Thank you!
A super demonstration and explanation! This is the best video I have seen!!!
Love the fact that you got up close and allowed the viewer to actually see the process and end result. Thank you!
Leah, I REALLY appreciate your instructional videos!! You break everything down into an easy to follow step-by-step process. Just a BIG thanks!
Thanks Leah, goal accomplished. You encouraged me to tackle an entry hall repair in less than half a day. After getting quote for $500 to have it fixed, I said to my self I'll check youtube, and said to him, "I'll get back to you."
:-D !!!!
You are the best!!
This is exactly what I need to do, this is my first time living in a home with textured walls and had no clue on how to do repairs to texture.
Thank you !!
Just getting ready to finish a bathroom remodel and i had a small hole and 5" x 40" strip to patch in the ceiling. Once again you've saved my day! As always, thank you for the information and the great walk-through.
Leah-I am always so happy when I see that the video is you. You give the most clear and concise instructions necessary. Thank you.
This was SO helpful. I had so much trouble getting Google search results on this concept of matching dried spackle to wall texture and this is exactly the solution! And you way of explaining things is thorough yet concise, very much appreciated and enjoyed watching! Also your voice is lovely :) Thank you very much
This is a fantastic video and the best that I've seen so far. Thank you for the thorough explanation and camera work. I'm enjoying your videos and learning quite a bit. As a first time DIYer, I'm nervous I'm going to do something catastrophic but these walk throughs make it much less anxiety inducing.

Great instructional video! Clear and concise. Help build my confidence in tackling a couple of drywall repairs. Thank you!
I love your tutorials!!! You are my go-to person for DIY!! I just had carpeting removed and wood stairs installed. I have several places where I will need to touch up my walls with Orange Peel. After watching your video I have the confidence to do so:):) Thank you so much - Debi

+esterixis you're very welcome! I'm to be of help. :)
OMG!! I LOVE YOU!!! I've never come across such a great explanation of how to properly texture, as well as lay down drywall patching. I feel so much more confident. The paintbrush blending is brilliant!!
Thanks for your clear directions! Not only are your videos straight forward, they empower me to feel confident to Do It Myself!
Thank you Leah! I have wanted to fix the orange peel in my bathroom but was always too scared, watching your video I know have the confidence and am on my way to Lowes. I can't wait to do this and finally get my bathroom painted. You are the best instructor, because you are so detailed.
Thank you so much! This was truly helpful, it's like you read my mind, I am in the process of painting a loft and have discovered some holes and was wondering how was I going to fix them and Boom! 'I can do this!" Thanks L.
Thank you so much! I've been putting this project off for months but watching this has given me the confidence to tackle this tonight. You explained everything so perfectly.
I am glad I clicked on your video Leah. Very simple explanation of how to patch this wall and texture it and it came out very nice. I have seen some people not even show how to lay down the texture after it has been applied and the closeup of you performing this was great.
Leah, you are simply enchanting. Keep up the great work. Thank you for the help.
thanks!
Great Video!! This is exactly the How-To I've been looking for!! I love how you describe your actions and your reasons! Well Done. Thank you again!
you're welcome, glad it was helpful!
Jane you are one of the people that has taught me alot and I value your work very much. You make it so simple to understand and show very detailed instructions.
Thank you for the perfect educational pace. There are quite a few videos out there that beat around the bush, but you dig right into it and give great tips along the way. Great video.
Jane, you are awesome! I watched some other very good DIY drywall repair videos, but yours hit the nail on the head for me. It was the exact same type of patchwork project I’m in the middle of right now. I had even gotten the same brand of orange peel sprayer. I just needed to know the proper setting and technique. Thank you very much. May you have much success in all your endeavors!
Came here to say the same thing!
Well done. I've watched several of these videos, yours has been the most helpful.
thanks!
Leah, I love your channel and I love how you explain things. I watched 2 other similar videos prior to yours, they were pretty much useless. Thank you. Triple.

Thanks Leah. I fixed & patched an area in my dinette (high visibility) with your help!
you're very welcome, and congrats on doing it! Way to go!
@@seejanedrill I need to match a texture. It looks like a knockdown texture. But I tried and wasn’t even close. If I send u a pic or 2 of the texture u think u could help? Love your videos btw!
I don’t comment on UA-cam videos very often or at all but I want you to know that you have helped me out several times. You are great at explaining things and have made my home improvement jobs go much smoother.
First time home buyer, lots of problems here. You are a phenomenal life saver! Thank you so much for this! I understand I’m 4 years late to the game, but that just shows you how awesome you are! 😊
Yes. A good tutorial. I am in process of texturing some large areas after having done some repairs to my bedroom walls. I tried a can of that spray stuff and got a huge mess, a messy splatter. Instead, I used a whisk brush, thinned the joint compound, and ran my hand across the bristles, creating a fine spray matching the old texture. I ran a spatula over the peel to knock it down a bit.
Yea! I could see how that would work! Cool! Thanks for sharing.
I tried that brush technique and all i did was sprayed mud on myself ...lol
I dont even need this but i love how she explains! Haha awesome
Hey Carina, this is like having those specialty tools, you don’t need them until you really need them.
I need this BUT also enjoying watching her other vids.
Same.
She's awesome 👌
Perfect! Thank you I have to do this repair and was worried I wouldn't get a good blend now with this video I'm confident thank you again!
Absolutely beautiful fix, on top of that Lea love your personality and your clear instructions!
I like your wet paintbrush trick!
Thank you very much. Now I can fix my wall.
+Melvin Morales you're very welcome, Melvin!
I really enjoy and appreciate the way you explain things in your videos. I’ve watched and used several of them and just wanted to say thank you!
OK,,, so once again you provided me with all the information I need for a repair job. You keep it simple and to the point with comments and show just how to do it. Excellent video!
Yesss!!! you go miss lady! this helped me alot,
I just need to know the name of the board and paper attached to it, places to purchase that and other materials you used such as the texture spray and was that wall putty? Also, that wall paint is the same color is mine in my apartment, do you know what color it is? or any tips on how to find out what the correct color is ( maybe take a sample to the store?)
Queenn Callier she peeled the paper off another piece of drywall! It is a wonderful trick!. Another, is to use setting compound to join a piece to cardboard. These are two ways to not spend more money if, like me, you have extra wallboard hanging around. As for places to purchase: I like KamCo, Home Depot, my local business and at last resort Lowes. For your wall color: before squaring off - take a small piece, half dollar size, and bring it to Sherwin Williams. BEST PAINT MATCHING EVAH!
Queenn Callier google butterflypatch. That's what it is, good luck miss.
I have adopted a way like you stated, i have 1 chisel I keep razor sharp, its heavy and .75 inch, I make my plug flanges a little larger than I need to and when I put it in the hole to get the fit right I use a sharp box cutter to carefully cut the flanges so that the box knife blade goes thru the flange and scores the wall, remove the plug and then with the chisel i carefully remove the paper , paint, and all down to the bare Gypsum, it's ok to go a little deep and make the surface rough because the new compound and paper will cover that nice and hold better by being more grippy. remove it all from the hole to the score mark all the way around, now when you put the patch in the whole thing is either exactly level with the wall or lower. If its a Really large hole , like more than 4 or 5 inches accross, sometimes i go ahead and get a 1X 1/4 inch piece of pine ( free bee where I find them) and cut it over sized and run it on the back side bolting it with recessed sheet rock screws it's makes it easier to get a firm plug and also allows for more holding compound when the plug is inserted. i use way more than she did in the edges of the hole, i like to think of it as expanded rock on the other side , when it dries out on the other side it holds it all up nice.
Hell yeah though, do it like that and POOF it's not just a nice patch, it doest show at all, zero show, I shoot for that every single time, if you can tell where that hole is I have failed.
cut your patch first. them trace your patch on the wall. then cut out the line you traced. patch will fit perfect because you traced around the patch
This is why we need you teaching high school students so they can learn this as well! One question, how do you make the drywall plug?
It's called a California Patch. She has a video demonstrating how to make it.
ua-cam.com/video/qOSzbX92ttM/v-deo.html
A well done video that shows technique, warnings, examples, and how to do things step by step / what to not worry about. Great, even 7 years later!
This is the best video I’ve watched on this topic. Clear instructions laid out for beginners tackling a orange peel patch. Thank you!
"I'm going to give one zap".
3 sprays later😂 just messing. I love the video.
That's what's up mami. Great tutorial.
+Noriel Gonzales :)
Thank You Leah, your videos are very informative and entertaining as well !
Yet another excellent video. Wish you had been around when I first started in property maintenance..lol. Would've saved me a lot of trial and error. You always provide just the right amount of detail and instruction for DIYer's. I still learn tips and I've been doing this stuff for decades.
At 9:18 she really "lays it down" makes me want to listen to that old Ratt song while doing my drywall repairs.
*May, I point out the mistakes?*
Stick the can in boiling water (off the stove) let it warm
Up and vigorously shake it … spray in circular motion and consistent don’t zap it. And screw in your drywall to a piece of wood in the very beginning .Coming from someone who does this at least 3 times a week*
Heating the can is a good idea as it does warm the air and cause the spray pattern to perform better. As far as screwing in a piece of drywall to wood substructure placed behind it. First, you need the wood and the screws which is more materials and time; secondly, that is simply another way to do it necessarily better for the average diy-er. Leah is demonstrating a california patch style which is plenty sufficient for anything under 8 to 9 inches and under.
What a gift you are to all of us! My 13 year old daughter & I are grateful ... we both have projects to handle using orange peel before we paint. Thank you so much!
you're both very welcome! :)
What an absolutely amazing video! Great job and beautiful work! Thank you
It is a personal thing, but when using those plugs I like to cut the paint and paper of the surrounding drywall just so I can recess that paper just a bit. I find it makes it smoother for me.
+Joe Smyth Thinking the same. I too remove some of it just enough for the paper to fit in without making it stick out. Now on an orange peel looking wall it shouldn't matter that much (the texture is hiding it) but on a wall without any texture it's always better to take away some of it's layers. That way you won' see a bulge and you can make it much smoother.
Justin Axdahl WTF?!
+Joe Smyth Yes, I would never do it as video shows, recessing is best. Also, with orange peel, you could just use a very heavy roller sleeve, and or extra paint dabbed on.
Ross MUNN Extra paint to create the orange peel look is a no go. Tried it here, and the paint - where dabbed or applied with a heavy roller - ran down the wall like droplets. Not a pretty sight. ^^ Maybe if you have special structural paint it will work, but that stuff is pretty expensive, let me tell ya.
I see what you mean. I've done all kinds of patching and matching. Don't give up.
I punched a hole in my drywall just to follow the instructions.
LOL
Thank you Ms. Lea! This is just what I was looking for. As a long time subscriber, I love your videos and explanations...you truly are a master of your trade!
Leah, your explanation was concise, well-worded, and very informative. You even covered the caveats. Wish me luck, I'm about to do this a very repair!

Leah, your video on the orange peel application is the best I've ever seen. Very precise on the blending aspect. Super job!
Thank you,
Michael DeStefano
So thankful I found you this morning! This is exactly the information I needed to handle my own drywall repair. :)
OMG! This was so helpful. Using the putty knife to knock down the texture made ALL the difference in getting the texture to match. My Dad who was in the contracting business and repaired countless walls didn't even know this. I can't thank you enough for sharing your expertise.
Love this video. I had a patch to fill in and using her technique helped my project come out excellent!
Amazing! Clearly taught and easy to understand! Thank you!!
wow! you're so articulate and to the point. You explained the process so clearly and so concise. You also sound like a professional TV commentator. Thank you
Whenever i need help with a home improvement project i search Jane's videos and she never fails me. I share her videos with all my weekend warrior friends
Watched this video years ago. Have a current patch job so I go on UA-cam to kinda refresh my memory and ended up watching your video again! Thanks for the quality content. 😃👍
I bought a fixer upper two months ago and just discovered your channel. I love your videos! Thanks!
Excellent demo! Concise but thorough. You have a great "radio" voice. Thanks!
Leah, you really do rock as a knowledgeble teacher. Loved your mini-split video as well....thank you
Thank you Leah. I'm pretty handy, but plaster patching is not one of my time tested skills. This video along with with your drywall repair video has me confident I can do it. Thanks.
