Finally a good video on The Witch and The Hundred Knight. As someone who just came out of properly finishing the game and been getting other people to hop on it I need to express how glad I am for a GOOD review of the game to exist today. Minor thing, while I agree that exploration is a hassle for 100%, I think it's mitigated once you obtain the Shinobi facet and the scouting tochka, considering that Gcals are consumed little by little as you uncover the map, both of these things are just godsends for the exploration. Otherwise, great video, thanks for being possibly the only person to come out with a good review of the game.
While it might be a fairly flawed game, literally almost didn't release at all according to interviews, it somehow managed to become one of my most memorable gaming experiences. I don't quite know why it managed to connect with me as much as it did, especially in the face of the original PS3 version that randomly crashes, but I'm almost kind of glad for it. I am still to this day obsessed with it. And surprisingly, I must not be the only one cause NIS definitely regards it as a cult classic of theirs and continues to bring it back up in some way: The "Revival" remaster that adds and fixes up various things. A one-shot manga. The, albeit very divisive, sequel. The, arguable, actual sequels through "Labyrinth of Refrain" and then "Labyrinth of Galleria". Two cameo inclusions in "Disgaea". Multiple banners in "Disgaea RPG", basically annually (To the point Female Laharl, Awakened Rosalin, and Seraphina have Metallia cosplay variants, while Metallia herself has a variant cosplaying Female Laharl). ETC. But yeah, I was so obsessed with it that it's one of the rare few games I actually went back to replay. Not only that, I went out of my way to talk to every NPC, explore and exploit every nook and cranny I could, and even came up with -shock- multiple fan-theories. The game outright bashes you over the head repeatedly with foreshadowing that you only really will notice on a replay. Like, did you know there's a NG+ exclusive NPC? Interacting with the back of Metallia house, around the chimney/furnace, brings up an entirely unique character who just gives you food items once a chapter. NPCs actually update their dialogue, sometimes even multiple times in the same chapter (Lucchini's village especially) Chapter 7 (the one with Mittens) is regarded as a fluff chapter but it actually is one of the most foreshadow heavy chapters in the game, bringing up multiple details that become crucial plot points later on. Invading one of the houses in the Martial Snowfield reveals that's Sabina's hometown. Tochka...is an old Russian unit of measurement, equaling 1/100th of an inch. I could just go on and on about "The Witch & The Hundred Knight". But as always, I gotta shut up and stop before I lose it.
Technically, the Witch and Coven games (labyrinth of Refrain and Labyrinth of Galleria) are sequels too. I highly recommend them, they got some jank but phenomenal artistic direction, stellar story and I think Tenpei Sato is at its very best in those game. I never played the Witch and the hundred knight but I hope NIS release a remaster or remake of the two games before I end up buying a ps4.
@@MagsIsGaming It's something that when you play it will be immediately obvious. I haven't played Witch and the Hundred Knight, but when seeing the names of facets and the weapons types that use the same icons it was hard to not see.
I was going to say this if nobody else did. Labyrinth of Refrain also has some of the wildest variation in level themes I've ever seen which made it very entertaining to progress through even when I was just spamming the same one OP magic attack for the whole game. No forest world -> ice world -> lava world crap with that game that's for sure.
@@HammerspaceCreature Absolutely, the narrative and level design is marvelous, I still think the game was the best in its genre there. It's pretty sad the level design was not very strong in the sequel.
Ah, the first entry in "the Witch and Her Lackey" series! These games genuinely surprised me with their writing chops. **Maybe Spoiler** It's when I purchased the "Coven of Dusk" artbook (which I highly recommend avoiding until after playing the game) that I realized that they are interconnected-especially in terms of mechanics and certain story elements. I started after the "Hundred Knight" games. **Maybe Spoiler ends** The stories really manage to hook you, I was always wanting to see the following segment. As for your concern about map exploration, that aspect becomes less of an issue as you progress in the games. The tedious parts remain sadly. Some mechanics are also a bit more fleshed out down the line and the "mindlessness" is less of an issue as the games go on. Also, Tenpei Sato seems to never miss! I have yet to hear a genuinely misplaced track in the games he worked on. Great review-keep up the good work!
The Witch Series is my fav... Hundred Knight and Labyrinth of Galleria are so special for me, Especially Galleria which is my favorite game! I hope you'll also dedicate a review to the rest of the series in the future, maybe some people will decide to try them
Can't wait for you to review Guided Fate Paradox and it's sequel. Aside from an appearance as a DLC in Disgaea D2 it seems like the characters there never had a reappearance. And a port of the game is about as likely as D2.
i really love the story in this one and the next witches games finish them last year sad that director left NIS. I did not like 2 and then I looks it up and its a entire new team that worked on it aside the ost.
@@awsomesaucekirby I thought I’d save the guides for the bigger “disgaea-likes” that have a lot more to them. I didn’t think a dedicated guide on a game like this that doesn’t even have a postgame would be very interesting, but I still made sure to go over the completionist aspect and endgame content!
It's not afraid to try and disturb the player, yes. It's more to cement the vulnerabilities of characters and raising stakes. It's a few key moments, nothing too extreme or graphic.
Honey wake up Mags just released a Witch and Hundred Knight video

Man I saw this game on the switch store and was like "holy shit this is were metalia is from" and really wanted to buy it
I missed the stream but I'm not missing this video.
Edit: i'm not even halfway through the video and i already wanna buy the game lol

@@EasilyBoredGamer yup! They are all 4 connected ( Hundred 1,2, Refrain and Galleria ) It's my favorite NIS series ^^
I can't believe you are talking about this game I just beat it not too long :)
Underrated game enjoyed the story and the gameplay was fun but a bit tedious if you go for all endings

i LOVE the first one i really wish i could say the same about the sequel it looks the same but also just boring or okay
Damn. I wish i could play this. Anything similar on pc?
First ZHP and now Hundred Knight? Why are you torturing me with memories of dead series and horrible sequels...
The background music has this odd high pitched synth whistle sound this is awfully annoying otherwise great review
Not a 100% guide? A review?
Odd.
