- Appearing on The Rolling Stone 10th Anniversary Special in 1977, Keith Moon tells one of his great hotel room destruction stories, and then gives a practical demonstration. Also seen here are Billy Preston, Melissa Manchester, Phoebe Snow and Steve Martin.
I love what Alice Cooper said. He said, "Maybe half of what you've heard about me, or Jim Morrison, or Ozzy Osbourne, is true. *Everything* you've heard about Keith Moon is true. And you haven't heard the half of it."
What a bore; needs a proper job and some dignity
Yeah, the video is called Behind the scenes with Alice Cooper - Keith Moon
That face Keith makes when he asks if they’d like to listen to his story is adorable, mischievous, and absolutely one of a kind. RIP Keith Moon.
He was surprisingly well spoken and educated when you see and hear him away from all the madness.
Inteligent man as well
Not his real voice - completely invented. He wasn't posh at all.
Antony Ashton Knew him personally did you?
@@JCStorm76 Its true he put on an accent, after Kit Lambert took him under his wing and mentored him. Keith then started to behave like Kit, such as putting on an upper class accent, when really he was a working class kid from Wembley. Read a book called 'Dear boy' a biography about Keith
A person can be clinically insane and also intelligent. Those traits are not mutually exclusive.
Keith Moon: Drummer, singer, showman, actor, raconteur, connoisseur of wine & spirits, demolitions expert, original Hollywood Vampire and all around renaissance guy.
And good drinking buddies with Ringo Starr, John Lennon, Oliver Reed, Joe Walsh, Alice Cooper...Man, to be in L.A., back in the early to mid 70s. 😎👍
I’d give my left arm to experience....um....as long as I could survive in that environment...🤔🤣🤣🤣🤣
Add narcotics expert to that list and you've nailed him to a tee....
@@AD-zn2gs No moreso than Elvis. If he was truly an expert he'd probs still be alive today.
Well said
I love the Roger Daltrey quote about Keith Moon; "The Who were not about making music. The Who were about keeping Keith on his fucking drum kit."!
Pete said, " Keith's drumming was faster than a machine gun." That's insane. I feel like he was the heart that kept the blood flowing. Peace.
Guys Keith moon needs a room.
Let's give him one with a water bed.
Kinda asked for it didn't they?
No one was like Moonie; he was a 1-of-a-kind gem. Every art needs a Moonie to lighten up the world.
Imagine Moon, Jim Morrison, John Belushi, and Sam Kinison all together for one big hotel-trashing party. Within the first hour the governor would be calling in the national guard.
Throw in Joe Walsh, and we'll call it a day.
That would be so epic, the craziest would be Moon then Kinison, stripperes naked pile of Cocaine on table bottle's of booze everywhere, what a party that would be, I don't think I would survive the night
@@waynej2608 Walsh is B team, not in the same class.
@@waynej2608 Throw in John Bonham too and Ozzy then you’ll have a deal
Lemmy Kilminster too
There was a guy in my high school who was just like Keith Moon. You’re born that way.
alcohol helps
I think Keith definitely changed after his accident that killed his driver. He became more self-destructive.
I have been a Moon fan all of my life. I'm sure I would have found him annoying, obnoxious and many other things if I randomly met him, not knowing him, but reading about his life from start to way too early of a finish and watching and hearing the best rock and roll drumming ever...I adore him and think about him as a lost boy. Bipolar, ADHD and self medicated, he got caught up in the fame and fun and couldn't stop himself. He didn't know how to be anything other than the fun and wild Keith Moon and that became his sad path to assured self destruction. A sad clown with a happy face. Flamboyant and loud to cover his insecurities and sadness. One of a kind and so special that we still love, study and are entertained by him nearly forty years after he left us.....
Wow I think you hit the nail right on the head there, Ginger Ann... I did actually meet Keith once in the early 70s, quite randomly, and had a slightly weird sort of conversation with him that left me with an impression of him pretty much as you describe, plus a bit of the (sorry to have to say it) rockstar delusionary ego thing, that presumably comes with the territory. That unexpected/unsought-after insight into his private life touched my heart though, and I was very sorry to read, only a few years later, of his death.
Ginger, please assess me too. 😉
@MusicalElitist1 Why do you think he was autistic?
Keith was the kind of guy you'd love to bump into, or go see him at his house but you don't tell him where you live!!!
Yes we all know
Any hotel that would knowingly rent a room equipped with a waterbed to Keith Moon deserves what it gets.
At that time, I would be the height of incompetence in the hotel industry not to put Keith Moon into a room with a bed and tv bolted in place (although I can picture him getting tools from the roadies to “show dem ‘otels” that he couldn’t be stopped! RIP Dear Boy....you are still missed by many 42 years later....
@Greg 4 more years!
Any hotel that rented a room to Moon deserved what it got.
Steve Martin and Keith moon are hysterically funny. I laughed out loud.
I wonder if Keith ever jumped out of a Hotel window prior to 1969, that would have been the First "MOON LANDING" 😀
Love it
In Argentina our local rock star Charly Garcia jumped from a 9th floor into the hotel pool and survived. You can watch it on youtube "me tire por vos charly garcia". Beasides that he is a musical genious.
@@SantiagoBsAs did he cry?
@@bonkeydollocks1879 No lol he asked for a glass of whisky and drank it while swimming for all the media that gathered there. Couple of weeks after he had to start a serious drug treatment... he had crossed a dangerous line. He said afterwards: "I was not afraid of jumping, I got afraid of not being afraid..." Oh yeah I’m sure all the people who’s lives he ruined would agree. Like his limo driver who he ran over and killed in one of his drunken attention seeking episodes. The world sighed with relief when he killed him self.
@@PAULLONDEN Naff Off !!!
Keith recounting Rock'n'Roll excess like a thespian..., that's simply marvellous!
Thanks, I've never seen this full clip.
Haven't seen the entire clip of this for years.
What an unforgetable character. 😜 Rest in peace dear boy...wherever you are.
Keith just expressed such absolute JOY in being KEITH MOON. You can only keep that up for so long and Keith did! Thanks for the years you were here.
Amen. But, you just know that some of them hours had to be a bit scary too. Ain't easy bein' out there like that, on all the time.
absolute 'JOY' of being Keith moon?? Did you ever read anything about him?? His life was a nightmare.
😢🙏👍
Joy isn't the word I'd use for an addict with BPD who beat his wife, neglected his child, pulled a gun on someone, and killed a friend because he was too high to notice they were behind the car...
I think he did it more to mask the pain from knowing he accidently killed his chauffeur.
No one has balls to be a true rock star any more...long live rock...long live Keith Moon😎😎😎😎💗
Don Gilreath Because these days, everyone is so uptight. They would put him on a terrorist watch list or something. Those kinds of shenanigans won't be tolerated in the new world order.
Don Gilreath liam gallerger has always fancied his self as a proper rock star 😂😂😂😂
Except he didnt, did he? Id rather have heard more of his music than more stories of smashing stuff. Pity.
I am not sure what that means?
Yeah, everyone's afraid to offend someone in the distance. Keith would be cancelled in this day and age.
There is only one! they broke the mold when Keith passed. One of the Greats of all time in drumming Universe. A true ORIGINAL
Omg I love this Keith Moon was so awesome best drummer ever ♥️
He looked good and healthy in this interview. Amazing that a year later he aged like 20 years and die.

The man has always been my spirit animal! Kids today have no clue..If it's already been thought of, moonie, or someone from the 1st wave of rock superstars, have already done it.
To split hairs, 'spirit animal' is a type of animal that a given person identifies with, not a fellow human whom one admires.
What a legend..!!! And so well spoken too.. 💖 Keith Moon 🥁
Better than any SNL sketch in decades!
i was very lucky to see moonie live around 72
I have never seen this, thnx for sharing.
Keith's looking actually fit and in decent health here.
I was lucky and amazed to see Moonie on the sticks for a Who's Next tour
I wish I had been able to see them anytime between 69-73...that's their sweet spot
Well you got Moon and Entwistle
I missed Keith unfortunately
That must have been euphoric...even without medications...I would have been so high on life- no drug could ever have gotten me higher....I am so envious!!!
I miss Keith Moon!!!
Let's face it he was one hell of a great drummer and I was sad at his passing
My six degrees (or less) of separation to Keith Moon, from this interview:
Melissa Manchester, wrote a song with my friend James L. Collins - THERE!
I'm just seeing a man have to play a part while depressed (from reading up on his life around this time).
He never got over accidently running over his driver in 1971, that was really when his behavior started becoming self-destructive.
Before I knew it was Keith Moon I thought it was simply a parity about him. While Steve Martin is talking I thought to myself, that guy is tearing this room up like he’s done this before. Truly poetic physical distraction on display!
Love his drumming but the pranks and vandalism were juvenille!
Back in '76, for my first ever concert, I went to the Super Bowl of Rock and experienced Keith Moon + The Who!! They also had their laser show, too...
The man was just insane. Genius drummer...but insane.
HE WAS BLOODY TERRIFIC!!! I LOVED HIM ;-)

No surprise. I could have sworn he died of alcohol poisoning, but it looks like it was a cocktail of substances.
A Shame.
@@senatorjimdracula1603 so am I, but it's alcohol that's going to kill me.
@@jefffraley7094 He died from the prescribed meds, designed to treat his alcoholism.
Moon died from an overdose of Heminvevrin, a drug used to treat alcohol withdraw symptoms. If he were a regular citizen, they probably would have kept him at a treatment facility and administered it under medical supervision. Some alcoholics should never attempt unsupervised home detox.
John Bonham died from excessive alcohol consumption within a 24 hour period. He choked on his own vomit.
Alcohol is the only drug that withdrawal symptoms can be fatal.
What a terrible loss of two incredible musicians.
Oh yes! And he was a phenomenal drummer!
Thanks to insurance for the gravy train,
we will never see this kind of superior appearances again by actual legends in entertainment. This skit is priceless. I wish I could have been there.
Ol’ Moonie probably took every narcotic you could think of in excess for most of his adult life and managed to survive. He then dies of a prescription drug overdose meant to help him quit drinking. Can’t get any more ironic than than that. So sad
He took 32 pills. I don’t see irony.
The drug was an opiate. Never should have been prescribed to him.

Damn, what a character! He was so excited to Share that hotel story, just to hit The punchline.”Well I destroyed 3 rooms in one fell swoop!”
Disclaimer: No actual hotel rooms were harmed in the making of this video. 😜 Now that that's out of the way, I have to say, that was a brilliant bit of comedy.
There was poetry in that destruction!!!
well put.
No there wasn't.
Just the right amount of agression for maximum comedic effect.
Everytime I watch or listen to Keith Moon he always has me smiling away. On the drums he was just a beast the best drummer imo but also he was such a mad as hell individual the wild things he used to do in hotels putting explosives in his drum kit I mean he is is the epitome of Rock & Roll
Keith Moon was a rare individual. One of those people that any story you here about him, ANY, it probably really did happen.
RIP Keith Moon
Lol yup...on Keith Moon Last 24 Alice Cooper says something like only about half of the stories about Ozzie and him are actually true, whereas with Keith, just about any story you hear about him doing some crazy shit is most assuredly true 😆😆😂😂
"And over that period of time one of the scariest things that happened to me - ever - happened. And that was that Keith Moon decided he liked me." - Joe Walsh
a couple of stories were fabricated, tho. He never actually drove a car into a hotel swimming pool, for example.
He's crazy with great talent
Alex Kid the 4 Who had talent to live 10 lives
This is the first Keith Moon interview I've ever watched. Didn't expect him to sound so middle class.
It was a completely fake accent that he started to affect in the mid 70’s, he’s from Wembley and his real accent is much more like cockney.
Check out the Russell Harty interview from 1972 as an example of his real voice.
@@justindodsworth8893 Listening again, he slips in and out of it constantly. He seemed more showbizzy than rock and roll.
I guess this is the only filmed example of his art of smashing a room.
Keith John Moon was a sheer force of nature.
His laugh and the face he pulls is infectious and sinister 🤣🤣🤣
Forever, one of a kind and greatest drummer in rock ‘n roll history. I’d say RIP, but I doubt that he is.

Keith Moon, Alex Higgins, Oliver Reed, George Best, Richard Harris..... Just several of my favorite British characters.
Can you imagine Keith and Oliver together???? What times.

That was so funny (with great touches of sadness)... I'm pleased to say I seen Keith live with the Who in the summer of '76 at Parkhead in Glasgow. quite incredible even all these decades later...
wow, that's Phoebe Snow, and two years after this, I personally flooded her hotel room!!! Never knew they had this interview!!
Greatest rock drummer ever....period
Keith was just as energetic beating those drums as he was beating those hotel rooms...LMAO!
I always thought Keith and Dudley Moore would have been an unstoppable combination !!! I've never heard any stories of them together though.
Keith and Peter Cook recorded some stuff.
He did hang out with Graham Chapman (of Monty Python fame), but I dont think they created any media together.
I like how Melissa Manchester was slightly afraid of Keith…and rightfully so. There was no telling what he might do next!
Frickin brilliant, 2 wild and crazy guys with one actually parodying himself. Keith really was the master. O and by the way he also played drums... for the greatest rock n roll band. The Master Race Blues Band.

He looked so young here. He looked 20 years older the following year just before he died.
Strange watching this now... I can clearly remember the day(s) that he died. I had just left school and was working in a lumber yard... there was a long haired hippy type guy (looked a bit like Mick Fleetwood) who we used to call 'Brian the Lion.' He was inconsolable... 'Who Are You' had just been released... and they were playing it non-stop on the radio... 'He said, you can go sleep at home tonight
... If you can get up and walk away.'
I think that within a week, Brian the Lion himself was dead... drug overdose or something... that is now 41 years ago... frightening...
Damn!
Bullshit Brian is alive and well

Moon the Loon destroying hotel rooms and throwing television sets off the window is one of the most epic rock star signatures. Another practical joke I always enjoy is how Tony Iommi used to set Bill Ward on fire.
Hard to think he died only the year after. He actually looks quite well there.
He looks about 35 lbs. heavier here than he looked in The Who’s hey-day, the late 60s-early 70s.
Jesus he looks like he aged 10 years in just a year because he looks so different in his final interview a year later

“Sorry about that.” After throwing an air conditioning unit out the window. 🤣
Over the past few years I have stayed in a great number of hotels, I can quite understand what drives people to want to wreck them.

"Hhheeerrreee's Keith!" 😛
I was fortunate to see the original who twice - great drummer - mate of Oliver Reed imagine those two together in a bar !!
Outstanding in a field of one.
the best drummer of all times
From what I gather Keith was a true philanthropist at heart. I think if he survived and got clean before his last year alive, he would have been a great advocate for sobriety, and he's probably have a hospital wing or two named after him. Can you imagine the Keith Moon Rehabilitation Center? What these rock stars needed to do (and still do) is invest some of that wealth back into rehab and therapy for themselves and others, which I'm sure is already going on.
Roger Daltrey invests and has a charity, holds benefits, etc. for teen cancer patients. I think it's spectacular.
The worst part is, trying to get sober may just have killed him.
Yep. Of course, I think part of why Keith's addictions got the better of him was the fact that he held himself responsible for the death of his personal assistant. After that happened he totally went off the deep end for years. If he had survived he might have been an advocate for sober living, but still been a madman and maybe he could have finally broken into the movies and become a great comedic star.
yes that is what eric clapton has done most successfully
Joe Walsh probably came closest to suffering Keith's fate, but finally cleaned up, and looks better than ever. It's a shame Keith never could get there.
