"We have him. Move toward him." - perhaps MY favorite line. One of my 4 favorite episodes ("The Doomsday Machine " - "The Ultimate Computer" - "Balance Of Terror" - "The Immunity Syndrome"). I STILL cry at that closing scene, where Kirk tries to comfort the grieving fiancee of the one crewman who was killed. The writing of this episode is soooooo incredibly good. The whole cinematography and lighting looks & feelss a lot more serious and darker / more tense than in most other episodes. Mark Lenard was a crown jewel in the role of the Romulan commander. I just love the fact that the so called "Bad guys" are not shown as black and white antagonists but actual characters with character backgrounds, culture and reason which makes it so easy to root with them and understand how important it is to see and hear all sides in a culture-clash and also between rivaling sides. It is so wonderfully played that at the end of the episode you feel the weight of a feature length film you watched in just 45 Minutes. One of season 1's BEST episodes.
This one is in my top 5. A super episode. Back in 1988, my brother and I (both Trekkers) attended a ST convention in Minnesota where Mark Lenard was a guest speaker. The convention was at a large hotel. Mr. Lenard was just hanging out just out front and a little to the side. We decided to go for it and speak with him. He was very pleasant and related that playing the Romulan Commander was his favorite part in the original series. He stated that if his character had not died, that there could have been a future there with him as a re-occurring character.
I loved this episode. It not only introduces us to the Romulans, but it shows us that an enemy isn’t quite as evil as appearances would lead us to believe. The Romulan captain shows this to us several times, especially in his line to Kirk “I regret that we meet in this way. You and I are of a kind. In a different reality, I could have called you friend.”
The Enemy Below is 1 of my favorite WWII movies, along with "Run Silent Run Deep", "Destination Tokyo", "They Were Expendable" and my all fave Torpedo Run". BTW, check out the name of the destroyer in "Enemy Below".
Well, I'll be... I honestly never knew about Lenard playing the Klingon Captain in TMP. After all these years I'm still blown away by what I never knew. Thank you!
All the Klingons in ST:TMP’s opening scene had their lines dubbed, after they decided that the Klingons should have their own language, so it’s not his voice. But read their lips while watching it, you’ll see that it matches the English subtitles perfectly, so originally it was his voice! Interestingly, the brutish, staccato Klingon language was first invented (and performed) by James Doohan for TMP!
Good job on the retrospective my friend.Balance Of Terror is one of my favorite TOS episodes,I especially liked the scenes aboard the romulan ship,it made the characters more human in my opinion, relatable even. The chapel scene gave this episode another dimension for me and how Captain Kirk inter-acted with a member of his crew during a tragic time.
I love the original Bird of Prey. As a young lad I noticed the similarities of the Romulan ship to the Starfleet vessel. Another great version of this ship was featured in the “Enterprise” episode “Minefield”. Models of these original versions (AMT) are hard to find and a bit on the expensive side, when you can find them. This a great and important episode of the original series. Thanks for spotlighting this episode and ship origin.
This was by far one of the most compelling and meaningful episodes of Star Trek. Kirk was completely down on himself and his abilities as a captain. Then he engages in a battle of wits with an equal, a competition between men of honour, what the Greeks called “Arete”, compelling one another towards greatness. The final scene always stuck with me, just like in the film that inspired it “the enemy below”. At the very end Kirk feels a connection to the other captain and begs him not to self destruct the bird of prey, but the romulan captain says “we are both creature of duty...in another life we would have called each other friend, one last duty”. In real war there is an understanding and respect among men of greatness, what Junger called the anarches among mere men.
In Star Trek II Wrath of Khan the Enterprise and the Reliant had them on their bridges, and corridors etc and in Star Trek VI The Undiscovered Country the Enterprise-A and the Excelsior had them on their bridges ,corridors ,etc as well. in Wrath of Khan they were yellow on the bridge and red in the corridors and in The undiscovered Country all of them were chrome or silver .
I like how the episode's preview has actual phasers being fired instead of the "proximity blast setting" effect that later became the photon torpedo. One advantage the remastered version of this episode has is that they made the proximity blast its own effect when compared to the photon torpedoes in other episodes.
I wonder... was the shape of the Roman helmets in this episode the inspiration for the design of the Romulans from TNG? Those helmets do remind me of the forehead protrusions
This is one of my favorite episodes, it shows more crew interaction and other areas of the ship not seen. Plus I can tell Kirk had compassion for the Romulans, and would have called the Romulan commander friend as well, in a different time.
Amazing how many iconic guest starring roles TOS had many of whom were used twice but none created two different characters of such importance to the show as Mark Leanord
The show "Enterprise" COULD have done a great service to this episode by connecting the attack on Earth in their season three, to the Romulan war. Instead, they made up a completely NEW alien that no one EVER mentions in ANY of the shows that are supposed to take place after. Might have helped save THAT show while connecting it to the best episode of TOS.
Enterprise erred considerably by infusing the temporal cold war and the Xindi saga as if there were no good interesting story lines about the beginning of the Federation
No. No, that is not our way. I regret that we meet in this way. You and I are of a kind. In a different reality, I could have called you friend. We are creatures of duty, Captain. I have lived my life by it. Just one more duty to perform. (He goes to the control console, turns a switch, and the whole ship explodes)
Mark Lenard gave a fine performance as the Romulan commander. My favorite moment was right before he self-destructed his ship when he told Kirk: "In a different reality, I could have called you friend."
I love the scene in the conference room where Kirk sounds out his officers on a course of action. Scotty - Sure we can beat them they only have impulse drive. Sulu - How? No visible target. Stiles - We have to attack, these are Romulans! You know that Mr. Science Officer! And then Spock to his surprise agreeing with him - I agree, attack.
Just started watching TOS and finished this episode the other day. I’m amazed at how tense this episode was. Not only that but I genuinely enjoyed watching the crews of both ships. Incredible episode. If I had a complaint it would be I wished it were longer or that the Romulan commander was able to have survived to return as a recurring antagonist.
I remember seeing this episode the first time it was televised. I did like it then and do now. It reminded me then of a WW2 movie but I thought it was "Run Silent Run Deep" but "The Enemy Below" is a better fit. One of the scenes I liked what when they first saw the Romulans and how much like Spock they look.
I'm starting to notice a pattern with the episodes you choose. With Picard currently running, it sure makes sense to get a few refreshers on the Romulans It's kind of insane that this is the only episode that ever directly talked about the Earth-Romulan war, seeing how big of a topic that war has become in fan discourse
Ahhhh you are the first to notice this pattern :P You see, SOOOOO many UA-camrs are doing Picard Review Videos and Picard Episode Easter Egg Videos, I wanted to do something a little different :) Hope you enjoyed :)
It's hard to talk about the Romulan war because this ep kind of painted everyone into a corner by saying that no one had ever seen a Romulan before. It's really unbelievable that Starfleet would not even find Romulan bodies floating about after battles. Of course, the whole reason for this element is that it creates the opportunity for Kirk to say "Leave any bigotry in your quarters - there's no room for it on the Bridge." So much for "there's no racism in the Federation".
This is one of my favorite episodes... The part I like the most is, When the commander questions the Centurian about the way the Empire, chooses to go to war !!!!
In the original script to Shore Leave, the character had a different name. When they cast the same actress, they changed the name to match the one from the earlier episode.
Love this version of the Romulans. A powerful and honorable warrior race. I would love to see a series set before Balance that follows the Romulan Commander through the campaigns he talks about and ends with his attack on Earth Outpost 4.
Definitiely a favorite of mine. The acting and characters are so good, you can ignore some of the more ridiculous submarine tropes, like the whole silent running bit. You really believe the Romulan commander's sincerity in saying that under different circumstances he and Kirk could have been friends. It's a credit that they didn't just make them generic antagonists and even established a relationship between the commander and the Centurian. You could tell he trusted his advice the way Kirk does Spock's and McCoy's.
Something that came to my mid with the chapel is that even if religion did not exist in Star Trek it would make a nice formal area for weddings and other ceremonies. Also if anyone has not seen :The enemy below", do it. It is a fantastic film.
I thought about that as well, however, the Enterprise D doesnt seem to have one... Opting instead to have weddings in 10 Forward... So it was an odd choice for Roddenberry!
@@TriAngulumAudioStudios Ah a fair point. Another thing to consider outside of it being suggested is the fact that atheism wasn't as widely held/widely known at the time. And with most of the US believing in religion at the time adding the chapel would make sense to the wider audience. And with atheism being more accepted by the 80's adding a chapel to the Enterprise-D was unnecessary. I would have to do some research to confirm deny that though.
I’ve always like this episode. In my humble opinion the idea came from the Robert Mitchum movie “The Enemy Below”. I’m sure some of you have seen it, but the character development and battle scenes mirror that movie.
One inconsistency in this episode is the Enterprise crew claim they are using Phasers, but the Photon Torpedo optical is being used, but in the Trailer, we see the Phaser Optical and the sound Effect is the Standard Phaser Sound Effect mixed with the "Full Power" Neural Neutralizer Sound.
Balance of terror is one of my favorite episodes. Although I really enjoy Styles vs Spock's confrontations. Although I wonder why Spock gets side eyes from the crew that knows him well, I guess that's what happens when a new bigot shows up. I really enjoyed your video and since it was a discovery for me I subscribed I'll love seeing some of your others.
Seems to me it took very little to cause a rift with Mr. E. That being said, "City on the Edge of Forever" is one of my absolute favorite episodes. Also, The Enemy Below is definitely worth watching, especially if you liked "Balance of Terror". I think you can see it right here on UA-cam. It stars Robert Mitchum and Kurt Jurgens, and is probably my second or third favorite submarine movie depending on my mood. JAMES
I don't recall the vessels having the Bird of Prey design in the original special effects for The Enterprise Incident. I think that's something they put on with the CGI to make them more Romulan. Of course, that was also the first time they used the Klingon ship model at all
Yes I did enjoy it like usual, despite its shortness 😉. I feel that the "chapel" was more a nod toward the special duty allowed a ship's captain in regards to marrying a couple then any religious component regardless of anyone whispering in his ear as it had no religious relics of any kind even "futuristic ones" and he put it in it and stuck it to them at the same time.
Great video!!! Very interesting info about the Romulan ship model. Not sure I can agree the Squire of Gothos is not a great episode as it is one of my personal favorites. Harlan... always upset about something. Keep up the good work! Kirk Forever!!!
@@TriAngulumAudioStudios i think what really ruined it was the inclusion of the American flag/declaration of independence/national anthem/oath just really broke the story for me and came across as American propergander which goes against the idea of a united earth in my opinion
Yeah, it's an issue ill try to explore when I do that episode... It seems very much against what Trek was trying to say in most other episodes... And certainly didnt really reflect Genes Views, yet he wrote it!
@@TriAngulumAudioStudios tbh mate. Watching back trek I have come to the conclusion Gene didn't have a solid vision with trek. He contradicts himself over and over again and things change almost weekly and within the films. It's almost as if he threw ideas out and waited to see what stuck and then let everyone else come up with the actual ideas
I agree with that for his early days... By the time of TMP he most definitely had a solid vision, one that was so out of step with what the fan base actually wanted that it almost ruined Trek, twice!
I just watched this again. Interesting how the phasers could not be fired directly from the bridge. As far as I know this was the only time the phaser crew was shown. At least it makes the need for a 400 plus crew more plausible. It's crazy how a star ship is made partly out of plaster that falls from the ceiling when hit by phaser fire. Spock even detected plaster in the debris that was jettisoned. Don't get me wrong, I still like the episode.
Mark Lenard and I shared a bottle of Scotch one night, sitting a few rows in a green room behind my wife Elizabeth sitting between Nichelle and Majel, who were swapping spit with a bottle of Amaretto di Saronno and having a grand old time. Playing on the big-screen TV (a new technology at the time) was "Balance of Terror", a famous remake of "Run Silent, Run Deep" and "The Enemy Below" in Star Trek terms. (I was AGOH, Art Guest of Honor, at "Star Trek 20" in Spokane, WA, 1986) Mark was the first actor to play all three major alien races in Trek history at that time: Romulan, Vulcan and Tlinghan. But as we passed that bottle (mine, on Kelly Freas's recommendation, 12yo Glenlivet), Mark commented about the video: "You know, I've never actually sat down and watched this. It really *is* pretty good, isn't it?" Yes, Mark ... \\//_ ... it really is pretty good.
TBH I like the idea of Starfleet ships having a multipurpose chapel. I know the show didn’t have the budget to show it, but in TAS and even TMP we see that there are non-humans apart from Spock serving on the Enterprise. These people may have religions that they bring from their home continent or planet as a whole that they could use the chapel for, aside from Earth religions using it as well. Good way to show inclusivity in the 23rd Century.
Just a thought... but if the JJ Trek 24th century stuff including Ambasidor Spock is canon, that means transwarp beaming must be canon. Therefore could we see transwarp beaming in Picard? Perhaps the Star Fleet HQ's transporter gates wernt just taking people around Earth, but perhaps to other nearby Federation worlds! Even if Transwarp is explained away as restricted tech, Picard was close enougth to Spock and they did mind meld, he may well know of it!
So the romulan Bird of Prey was meant to be a stolen Starfleet design, the romulan D7 was a klingon design with a bird painting because someone lost the original BoP model and the klingon Bird of Prey was designed to be a romulan ship but the plot changed? I love production back stories.
I always took that as a throwback to submarine dramas, where you do have.to be fairly quiet sometimes. But of course, sound doesn't travel in a vacuum, so yeah, doesn't make sense in a space battle.
Harlon Elison was himself beginning to have issues with Roddenberry... And was very much against what he called, Un-original work Work... These 2 things combines made him drop Paul off his Christmas Card ist so to speak!
I've been hearing for years that the Romulan bird-of-prey model was destroyed this is the first time i heard that a private collector has it.. I hope it's true👍🏾..Now where's the original Enterprise 3ft model it's been missing for years?🖖

One of my faves, i wounder if Styles went on to command the USS Excelsior in Star Trek 3 ?
That's a connection Id like to know as well ;)
Stiles is not "Styles without Substance." I can't see Stiles with a swagger stick up his shaft.
@@Euripides_Panz A reader of "The Captain's Daughter", by any chance?
That's were I read the "Styles without substance" pun first.😊
Great episode, thanks for video.
You're very welcome Scott!
Love the Episode!!
One of the best episodes. Period.
LOL Amen
Balance of terror is one of my favorite episodes. Although I really enjoy Styles vs Spock's confrontations. Although I wonder why Spock gets side eyes from the crew that knows him well, I guess that's what happens when a new bigot shows up. I really enjoyed your video and since it was a discovery for me I subscribed I'll love seeing some of your others.
Not sure if he ever played a Romulan but Tim Russ played a Klingon in 'DS9' which often gets forgotten.
He also played a human in Star Trek Generations.
@@StarWarriorCentral As well as the TNG episode 'Starship Mine' where Picard subdues him with a Vulcan nerve pinch.
I NEVER forget :P But no, he didnt play a Romulan, at least not yet ;)
the best episode of all
I knew it was based on the movie The enemy Below but I did not know it caused a rift with Harlon E.
Glad I could add a little new tidbit to your Star Trek Universe :)
Of course, that was also the first time they used the Klingon ship model at all
1 of the BEST eps ever! Great job! Jo lan tru!
Jo Lan Tru DMS
Yes I did enjoy it like usual, despite its shortness 😉. I feel that the "chapel" was more a nod toward the special duty allowed a ship's captain in regards to marrying a couple then any religious component regardless of anyone whispering in his ear as it had no religious relics of any kind even "futuristic ones" and he put it in it and stuck it to them at the same time.
Amazing commentary and history. New subscriber
My favorite episode. They should feature film this one. Same results but really bloody Kirk's nose in this one...
Great video!!! Very interesting info about the Romulan ship model. Not sure I can agree the Squire of Gothos is not a great episode as it is one of my personal favorites. Harlan... always upset about something. Keep up the good work! Kirk Forever!!!
Good Ol' Harlon :P And thank you very much :) As For Squire, I like the episode but for me, it's just middle of the road :) But to each their own :)
This is by far one of my favourite episodes.
Omega glory I find is very preachy
I hear you!
Would you mind doing one of this videos for "Where no Man has gone Before". I think it's the BEST original star trek episode ever made.
Great Episode! In Germany it is Called: Gleichgewicht des Schreckens
Thank you and that's a mouthful!
@@TriAngulumAudioStudios ha ha indeed!
love this type of content : just rewatched the startrekcontinues final double episode so this fits beautifully thankyou ::: :
Also a fan of ST continues. Fun fact, the woman who plays the romulan character was the daughter of the actress that played her originally on TOS.
Great episode. Well researched.
Thank you so much!
Love this tense and exciting episode. Everyone of the original cast is brilliant. It goes without saying JTK looks hot as can be. Just saying.
LOL I completely agree Maureen! Well about this episode being tense, exciting and brilliant ;)
Great video!!!
Thank you so much! :)
When I watched this for the first time I thought it was a clever way to use Uboat war stories. Later on I found out I was right!
This needs more views, dammit!
LOL well thank you AJ :) Much obliged :)
Brutus ; the most honourable Romulan of them all .
This episode was also the final appearance of Yeoman Rand until the first film.
Indeed it is!
Another great video.
Thank you Troy :)
My absolute fav..
(I was AGOH, Art Guest of Honor, at "Star Trek 20" in Spokane, WA, 1986)
Mark was the first actor to play all three major alien races in Trek history at that time: Romulan, Vulcan and Tlinghan. But as we passed that bottle (mine, on Kelly Freas's recommendation, 12yo Glenlivet), Mark commented about the video: "You know, I've never actually sat down and watched this. It really *is* pretty good, isn't it?"
Yes, Mark ... \\//_ ... it really is pretty good.
Excellent 🎉
OK! It’s Star Trek time on Netflix!!!
Enjoy!
One of my most favored episodes, as it uses real military tactics. What is the music you use in the background here btw?
So the romulan Bird of Prey was meant to be a stolen Starfleet design, the romulan D7 was a klingon design with a bird painting because someone lost the original BoP model and the klingon Bird of Prey was designed to be a romulan ship but the plot changed?
I love production back stories.
Excellent 👍
Thanks Dave :)
Squire of gothos was great, and a great actor. Balance of terror was just a space remake of "the enemy below"
I like the episode to, hope to see more of your opinions on your favorite episodes.
Well thank you David :) And im sure you will ;)
Can you picture ppl going over the creation of Star trek discovery episodes 50yrs in the future?
This is a great episode with one issue. Why are they being silent in the one scene?
LOL *whispers* I know right? :P
TriAngulum Audio Studios That’s my favorite bit. Yeah the whispering doesn’t make any sense.
lol. Just dramatic effect, so when Spock accidentally hits a button that causes noise, everyone would get a horror movie type jump scare.
I always took that as a throwback to submarine dramas, where you do have.to be fairly quiet sometimes. But of course, sound doesn't travel in a vacuum, so yeah, doesn't make sense in a space battle.
Can you clarify what Ellison was upset about? Was Schneider accused of plagiarism? If so, why didn't the makers of the original film weight in?
Harlon Elison was himself beginning to have issues with Roddenberry... And was very much against what he called, Un-original work Work... These 2 things combines made him drop Paul off his Christmas Card ist so to speak!
Should explain "Day of the Dove" the one episode you can't watch anymore.
I've been hearing for years that the Romulan bird-of-prey model was destroyed this is the first time i heard that a private collector has it.. I hope it's true👍🏾..Now where's the original Enterprise 3ft model it's been missing for years?🖖
