Today, I make a video I never thought I'd make. I'm cancelling my custom long-tail, Ferrari-powered, Countach-esque, supercar build, for a few good reasons. I'm sorry, and I promise I will make it up to you all.

I’m a certified welder. From the looks who ever welded that didn’t fuse the metal together correctly. You can still see the square shape tubing. That should have fused with rod.
It looks like it was welded with a 110 machine tbh... theres 0 penetration in that weld what so ever. it wasnt utilizing any of the strength of the square tube it was relying 100% on the weld
@@rsproductions5 I was about to say, someone went to Harborfreight and got whatever was on sale, went and watched a youtube video on how to weld, then ignored the fact that Aluminum is not steel.
Ambition-pk Hi there, I’m curious what you mean by “a 110 machine” and how that would affect the welding quality?
Chris Armstrong what he means by 110 machine is that, most small welders that are sold in like Home Depot or any other store like that, that are meant for small home projects are powered by your normal 110v outlets. But these welders are meant for thin material like sheet metal, or any other thin metal. When it comes to welding thicker material metal, it requires more heat, more energy to be able to penetrate and fuse metal. That’s where 220v machines come in. These welding machines require 220v compared to 110v. Who ever welded that kit car frame was probably using a aluminum spool gun on a 110v welder to able to weld that, and as you can see, the ‘wire’ didn’t fuse into the square tubing and only created puddle on top of the tubing. That or who ever welded that is just 💩💩💩 welder lol.

No disrespect intended, but this was foreseable since day one.
Well, I kinda intend some disrespect when I say that this had disaster written all over it from the start - there's some merit in getting in over one's head, it's one path to real knowledge. But he seems to get in over his head just because he believes his own bullshit.
His job is being an entertainer on UA-cam not being a full time mechanic. He needs new content all the time to keep getting views and cannot spend six months on one car even if he could fix it. It is an awesome wreck for a video but I highly doubt he ever really wanted to finish it.
@@actontreadway1168 Tavarish is an entertainer, while ChrisFix is the real deal.
It would’ve been hella cool tho cant lie
@@actontreadway1168 Exactly you have to take chances in life if you want to better yourself and Taverish has done well in the past with these projects
I study engineering and there is a simple rule : The material is supposed to break before the weld.
Those welds were horrendous and not enough penetrated
I wouldnt say that the material is supposed to fail before the welds. Its more that the material tends to fail before the weld because the material is weakened considerably by the heat welding causes, on a molecular level. Welding in general is far from ideal, but in many cases the only feasible option to attach components toghether.
@@mushroom032 truth. HAZ (heat affected zone) and the forming of intermetallics at the bond zone due to a blending of chemistey.. Chemistry gets changed bc its not a solid state weld and metals hit a liquid state allowing the filler metal and the base metal to mix.
There wasn't even the slight attempt to edge the metal for deeper penetration
@@mushroom032 the weld also has more tensile strength than the metal.
I agree. There was absolutely no attempt to get any penetration, that's what I call a "skin" pass.

You've pretty much silently killed every other project, we're used to this at this point
says the guy who I'm assuming has never had a car project before. A single project takes an enormous amount of time and money. Whatever time and budget you allocate for a given project, you basically need to triple it, because there is always going to be broken shit once you tear it all apart. Modern cars are insanely complicated, they're very likely the single most complicated object you will ever own, in terms of shit you can actually rebuild yourself. It's understandable that when you have 50 different projects, you're going to be bouncing around a fair bit and maybe not get them done.
@@uzaiyaro that may be true, but he's still here supporting him.
@@uzaiyaro ok boomer
@@OptimusHighMegaBong haha, yeah I kinda stepped into it, didn't I? I probably did arc up a bit, and my remarks a bit snide, but anyone who's partaken in a car project will understand that things don't always go as planned.
Cars can be really fun, but can also leave you tearing your hair out. Swings and roundabouts.
Moon Moon then maybe the best course of action is to laser focus on one of his projects and make a series of videos out of that. Like the Bentley for example. Or the SL. It’s not like this massively ambitious project overshadows his other one (cough Ferrari cough)
Why don’t you finish one of the projects you started ! You’ve got a garage full of unfinished projects .
Im willing to bet its because he is a you tuber. He needs to make content people want to see. And that means not going in order of project but interest in projects.

isn’t it because they sell those cars
@@lazydayB2B lol they finish most of their projects to 95% then start something else, but that's because they have to wait on a random part that take months to come in. The weld at 3:16 is a bad weld, I'd be suspicious of every joint on that frame. You're wise to scrap it.
Looks like a cold MIG weld, done in a hurry. TIG weld would penetrate, and be strong.
@@tezzrterry7485 you can mig weld aluminum. I thought you could only tig it.
@@TheOmw2000 Yup, that's how most production aluminum welds are done. Rear sub-frame of a 370z is MIGd, so are most aluminum trailer frames. A lot faster than TIG but the welds are not as pretty. You can actually get a aluminum spool gun for most MIG welders - that and different gas and you too can MIG Al.
To be honest, pointing out this weld was likely his response to SLC's response to refuse assistance with the build. They did him wrong and he gave it back. A weld with that poor of penetration is a glaring issue on a frame.
That looks a lot like it was done with AlumiWeld. No bueno, in a big way. You are smart to not get into it.

Can you, for the love of god finish the 6 speed swap in the SL JESUS CHRIST
No shit. How many years ago were we promised that 6 speed manual swap? Of course, i get it. It's not a Twin turbo Gallardo that's been thru the wringer. The Merc just isn't exotic enough. Didn't cost the better part of $100,000 to buy damaged. When done the Merc would be a really cool car with a 6 speed but in the end if someone didn't know they never built any manual equipped one's it would just look like a stocker. I'm not sure buying an Aston Martin and road tripping with two dudes in bona fide exotics has really helped the original spirit of your channel. It's morphed into all exotics all the time which apparently you cannot really afford unless buying them wrecked and yeah, rebuilding them would be good content but promises after biting off more than you can chew, once again? Not so much.
Blasphemy.

Makes me think this is why RCR pulled their support of the project even after Freddy expressed interest in paying retail prices for components. They're probably spooked about the structural implications this has on everything else they have produced.

Nope not ever
Tavarish: “I want to learn more about fabricating”
Stops project because he doesn’t want to be fabricating that much.
It's not that he doesn't want to. Is that he can't learn how to do it and actually do it in time for SEMA.
Which would be a fair argument if it wasn't for the fact that all he cares about is to get clicks on UA-cam (with clickbait titles and thumbnails), sponsorships and free exposure from bringing cars to events such as SEMA.
The issue seems to be that he thinks that in order to counter the lower attention span the average viewer has nowadays (which is below the 20 minutes mark), he needs to spam videos about any random car he has in his workshop, without any work actually being done and just hopping from a flashy car to another as soon as a flashier one becomes available.
One of his arguments against sticking to this project in particular is also the fact that he thinks that people are not interested in following him working on a single project for months and that's just not true. There are plenty of other channels that do exactly that and some, without the slightest bit of clickbait nonsense (or any sponsorship) are so successful they get half a million viewes per video.
Instead, it looks like he's just chasing the quick buck and the 15 minutes of fame instead of actually doing what he advertises in his own motto, "wrench every day".
more like he will not get to fix it for cheap and the backing from the company to do it on the cheap. For someone that does lambos and what not must only because he gets things for cheap if he says there name on here.... yea this left a bad taste in my month.
Comment does not make sense comes off as just looking to find a fault. He clearly explains exactly the statement you take out of context. There would have been fabrication though it was with the support of the company. He now has no access to parts and specifications originally that were said to be granted. For this type of vehicle it would be exceedingly expensive to be drive-able none the less safe in competition use. There would be reverse engineering in addition to fabrication that virtually always is needed on a custom vehicle.
@@ChaosZero. yeah maybe he doesn't want to build for so long, for example sk8215 and the E55 ASL ia begin built for months and tons of people follow that, but maybe not the volume tovarish want
There's a difference between learning to weld to make some custom panels and re-engineering and testing an entire car, complete with a CNC billet suspension made from scratch. One is doable, the other isn't realistic in the time frame I have.
I'll be honest, I wasn't really feeling this project and I think you've made the right decision.
Couldn't get manufacturer to "sponsor" the build or provide freebies and advice.

Skill share is helping me to meet and exceed my person goals, also here's why Im giving up on my project!
He reached out to the company that made this car in the hopes they would pay for everything. When they declined, he knew it would cost way too much to fix, hence he's abandoned this project.
7s29 SLC doesn’t owe him shit
Hey stuff happens at least you were smart to know when to say enough.
I read many comments complaining about how he quit on this project, well I am an experienced Auto Body Tech and one of the biggest challenges he had was the aluminum chassis, aluminum is a metal that has MEMORY, after a metal has been molded if it gets bent the memory stats to recover and the metal will pull to its original shape but aluminum is not flexible(thats why you dont see aluminum springs🤣) so it breaks and tears. Another thing the person who welded this together didnt do a "K-groove" welding, that is needed to weld on thick metal for the weld to penetrate 100%. If you put that car in a frame machine I garantee you that when they start to pull, that aluqminum will ripp off in pieces 🤣. The best thing to do is to create a new rear frame and bolt it on the the mid chassis just like bugatti did. You do that, and the ski is the limit🤓👍
The weld is not suppose to break, the frame is suppose to absorb the crash and bend at certain points in order for the driver to survive the impact. 😁

I hate that it has to go, but i totally agree with your decision, i have worked in the business for about 20 years (including collision) and i believe you are making the right move here by moving on especially considering those materials that the car is made out of. You really do need to start with a new frame here.

"to build it better you need to stop cancelling projects and finish what you started"
Sometimes it's best to throw in the towel. I was wondering how the car would ever be certified for road use anyway.
@Bud Smokegood Wow!! In the UK we have to have an MOT Test every year checking dozens of things from tyres, brakes, suspension, lights, windscreen, wipers, licence plate lights! even if your screen wash bottle is full!
The Ferrari seems like a better shell to put the 3 rotor in. since it's not a kit car you have documentation and specs. On top of those, much easier to find replacement parts for a ferrari.
I'm building an SLC Superlite. They are really awesome cars. There's a huge support network of owners that really help each other out. The SLC forum has great fabricators and amazing builders who would have been happy to help you! You wouldn't need anything from the manufacturer to do this project.

It would be interesting to get a Certified Weld Inspector to check these out on an Xray and see how all the welds look.
You did the right thing! Without the help of Superlite it would be close to the construction of a complete new car, with the dimensions of the Superlite 'original'. Those things are normaly done with extreme rare and expensive racing cars. A porsche 917 comes to mind, which was rebuild after a full crash. This car is simply not worth it. And you don't want a kit-car where your manufacturer simply does you not sell you parts, you needed for a repair.

Hey Tavarish, I’m a tig welder and fabricator and on Aluminum, if you go to hot while welding aluminum, most times the weld will crack so I’m not sure if it was the weld themselves
Do you ask Tony the welding Jedi to have a look at the welds and tell you what happened?
I don't know shit about welding, but I heard that TIG welding, which is used for welding aluminum is something quite different from steel welding, so not every welder knows about it. Although Tony might know it, that's a good probability.
@@strict89 that is very true
The material that was welded is too thick for full penetration, making it very weak compared to the base material, in fact, for the thickness of the part that he showed, there should have been some preparation to be made, edges should have been grind off to an angle to make maximum penetration easier while the filler material becomes fully jointed with both sides, the beads looks good, but its weak, also depending on the Alloy, proper heat treatment is required for most Ally welds and unlike steel and iron welding, one should avoid grind off Ally welds.
