Good video. Easy to follow instructions. We have tried making adjustments to the fill valve, and have essentially reached the conclusion that it would be best to just get the whole assembly and replace it. We'll let you know how it goes.
This was the new style universal fill valve. After countless tweaks and adjustments, I determined that the part had simply worn out and was in need of replacement which occurred over the weekend. The video was still helpful though. Thanks for sharing.
My toilet flushes fine but when it starts to fill back up itll fill for 2 seconds then stop then fill up again and stop. This goes on for about 25 seconds until its filled up. Do I need to change the fill valve? Would that fix it? Lmk please. Thanks
Hi Tony, thank you for watching. If your toilet refills and the water level says consistent afterwards then your rubber flapper is still good so it would point to a problem with the fill valve. The fill valve can wear down and can become sticky, causing the valve to turn on and off intermittently. There's no other part that would cause that behavior.
Hi Carol thank you for watching. Does the toilet hiss when its filling or is it constantly hissing all the time? In your case you'll have to adjust the chain length on the handle. If you have to hold it down, it means that the handle doesn't have very good leverage. If the flush lever only has one hole then you'll have to shorten the chain. If the lever has multiple holes then you can hook the chain to a different hole until the flush improves. ua-cam.com/video/kIjP4qm20yM/v-deo.html
to get the CL just right, the fill valve extends to high, and so i can't put the cover back on. it had to max out at 14" to get the CL correct. hmmmn, i wonder if i should replace the center apparatus with the flipper, so the pipe would be lower, or just take out the center piece and cut off 2" inches of the plastic. is the a replacement for the center part that is shorter than what i have?
Hi Philip Mitchell, that is not uncommon for the fill valve to extend higher than the level of the tank and sometimes the overflow tube (on the flush valve) needs to be trimmed with a hacksaw. As long as the top of the overflow pipe is 1 inch lower you'll always have that buffer in case of an overflow. This is the part used in the video, Fluidmaster describes this in more detail here. www.fluidmaster.com/toilet-problems/building-safe-toilet-prevent-flooding/ Hope this helps. Cheers!
okay, so it seems i have to cut a few inches off on the flush valve tube with a hacksaw so, i don't have to max out the fill valve and i can put the tank lid back on. hmmmn, i wonder can the flush valve pipe be removed without taking off the tank and the two screws? i was worried cutting the pipe as is with a mini hacksaw might loosen the whole apparatus...so yeah
The flush valve is screwed in and has a wide base so it should be fairly secure. If you hold the flush valve pipe with one hand it should be steady enough to cut as long as you have enough room inside the tank. Its best drain the tank and then line the tank with a garbage bag since it will be covered in small plastic shavings. If you do remove the flush valve its pretty straight forward but you can see how to do it here: ua-cam.com/video/RQBualJlc9g/v-deo.html
Hi Maria Auxiliadora, some problems can be solved through more simple means so it depends on what your toilet is doing. If your toilet is running constantly and is always filling with water, then its best to replace the rubber flapper valve. This is one of the most common fixes. You can learn about this here: ua-cam.com/video/2pjIyWmNGg8/v-deo.html
Jenn W wow thankyou for your info! I was in the USA for the first time before and just wanted to try to fix my friend's toilet as he always busy all the time.. it does need replacement, i didnt know i could buy it online
Hi Julie, thank you for watching! If you hear the water trickling it means a small amount of water is leaking out of the tank into the bowl, the water level is dropped and the toilet is slowly filling with new water. The most common place for the water to leak out is the rubber flapper. If you've replaced the rubber flapper, then it could still be a problem with how the flapper sits on the flush valve. If you manually test, and apply a little bit of pressure on the flapper, and if this stops the trickle of water then you'll know its not sealing tightly. Additionally the flush valve can sometimes crack or might be worn down. If this is the case it too can be replaced: ua-cam.com/video/RQBualJlc9g/v-deo.html

Some older fill valves (the ones with the float/ ball) can be tricky to adjust. Installing a universal style valve can make it easier for sure.

The part she replaced is $9 - $15 and is available as a universal part that fits almost any tank. You can buy them online easily from many stores.
