- The sound of BBC Radio 2 as heard on Thursday 9 February 1989.
You'll hear Bill Rennells, Alan Dedicoat, Chris Stuart, Derek Jameson, Ken Bruce, Jimmy Young, David Jacobs, Gloria Hunniford, Adrian Love, Wally Whyton, Paul Jones and Brian Matthew.
Back in the late 80s early 90s BBC had a warmth about it that made it the popular station, later high jacked by so-called modernisers.
When Radio 1 was king, I remember BBC Radio 2 being the Old fogie station for the over 45's , As a child my Grandad always use to listen to it in his car, on our summer families Holiday to the island of wight and Yorkshire in the summer back in the 1980's, Today Radio 2 is aim to the over 35's and at the age of 44, i'm now the old fogie.. Great memories.
i love hearing these old clips & theme tunes - takes me back to my mums kitchen, she had radio 2 on everyday and loved it, wonderful memories
Hello, there! RIP David Jacobs.
Good old wireless 2, when you actually turned the radio up to listen.
BBC Radio 2 felt a lot more cuddlier and cosier back than it is now. You can imagine someone up in the middle of the night listening, or someone who needs to travel from the north to the south, and only have this station for company. It's not the same now. At least Ken Bruce is still around virtually in the same slot.
Radio 2 was great back in day. I really wonder how the hell it all went so wrong? I haven't listened to radio 2 for years now.
John was sick that day and Charles Nove deputised but for some reason I didn't record it.
Now and again I'd record shows from one day but only extracts from each one - tape rather more expensive then. What a pity I didn't record the full day.
I remember my first ever job around this time & being very shocked to have to endure listening to Radio 2 to & from building sites in the company van...Del Boy Jameson in the morning was ok, Big John Dunn coming home was not too bad also...but I was daily paralysed having to listen to David Jacobs at lunchtime & his 50's showtime band music....😱😱😱
miss Gloria Hunniford on weekdays on radio 2 in the afternoon and Jimmy young mornings
Times change, but it's a shame there's so little room for this conversational style of radio now. Of the current crop of R2 presenters, only Blackburn, Gambaccini, Walker and Harris can hold a candle to any of these, and none of those has a daily programme.
Steve Madden was king of the airwaves - where was he that day, I think he did alternate Nightrides with Charles Nove, Bill Rennels, Peter Dickson, Colin Berry ...
Personally, I think Jamison was the beginning of the end. Interesting also that he had to come from a basement studio because he was incapable of operating the Con desk.
I remember Bill Rennells from BBC Southern Counties before the Labour government culled all those great regional stations - the man was so funny and I could sit there for hours listening to him.
Bill is still on BBC Radio Oxford
Thursday 9th February 1989
Light classics are completely alien to Radio 2 in 2019.
Amusing hearing the Dallas singers try and cope with "Derek Jameeeeeson" and "Gloria Hunni...ford?"
Dereck jameson what a great guy, morning morning jameson here, loved listening to him
I used to listen to Radio 2 on the building sites whilst working with my boss. I was a teenager. Wogan, Ken Bruce, jimmy Young. Dry humour, lovely music, a real nice, easy atmosphere around it of old pro`s not trying too hard ! I secretly enjoyed it. They`ve ruined Radio 2 now, everyone is trying too hard to be something, but i`m not sure what they are trying to be.
