Biden honors uncle who he says was shot down during WWII in an area known to have 'cannibals'

- President Joe Biden on Wednesday visited a memorial near his Pennsylvania hometown to honor his late uncle’s service in World War II and said Donald Trump was unworthy of serving as commander in chief.
While in Pittsburgh, Biden spoke about his uncle 2nd Lt. Ambrose J. Finnegan Jr., aiming to draw a contrast with reports that Trump, while president, had called fallen service members “suckers" and "losers.”
Finnegan, the brother of Biden's mother, "got shot down in New Guinea,” Biden said. The president said Finnegan's body was never recovered and that “there used to be a lot of cannibals” in New Guinea.

It was a twin-engine plane A-20 Havoc , and it was not shot down. Both engines failed for unknown reasons over the ocean, some distance from New Guinea. The plane crash was quite violent. There was one survivor, and the others went down with the plane. No wreckage or remains were found.

However, U.S. military records about Finnegan's death do not mention the aircraft's being shot or discuss cannibalism: "For unknown reasons, this plane was forced to ditch in the ocean off the north coast of New Guinea, the records say. Both engines failed at low altitude, and the aircraft’s nose hit the water hard."
