    I wish for peace and harmony everywhere. Once as a kid I read the story of a Japanese girl who got blood cancer as a result of radiation exposure because of nuclear attack. She made origami birds and prayed for her life. Later she died.I kept on thinking of her for a very very long time. It was heartbreaking.

      There's no denying that the Japanese did some horrible atrocities during the war, but regardless there's no denying that the bombs dropped on Japan was a horrible act in itself. It was a necessary evil, sure, but one we mustn't be proud of. Hundreds of thousands of innocent people died. You can't say that they all deserved it.

    • @han-ek7gd
      @han-ek7gd 6 років тому +56

      - Blu_Pixel - that was the quickest way to end the war. A land invasion would have ended more lives. The Japanese has not yet apologised or at least showed some sympathy for the 10 million people their ancestors killed during WW2, but they expect the sympathy of others.

    • @Blupl1776
      @Blupl1776 6 років тому +89

      Hannah Guo Hannah Guo you got it all wrong. First, I'm fully aware that it was a better option than invading Japan. That's why I called it a necessary evil. My point is that there's no way that innocent civilians deserved such a fate. They had little to do with the people their military had killed.
      Also while I personally haven't seen any examples of Japan apologizing to the people of China for the war crimes they committed there, there's no doubt in my mind that they've done it at some point. If you know anything about Japanese culture you would know about how honorable they are and how they own up to their mistakes. Likewise they never expected sympathy from the president like this. The whole trip didn't need to happen. They acknowledge how the bombs were necessary and don't expect people to make amends for it.
      You make it sound like we got bad beef with Japan, but there's a reason why we're allies now

    • @han-ek7gd
      @han-ek7gd 6 років тому +32

      - Blu_Pixel - lol Japan has good relations with the US and stuff but still has a bad relationship with China etc. Personally I know that the Japanese are extremely patriotic of their own country and I have never seen them properly apologize.

      America holds no grudge against Japan. In fact, hatred of Japanese people over Pearl Harbor is viewed now as a sign of a sick and disordered mind. It's not often talked about, but there is a deep shade of self-disgust here over Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Maybe that is why my country fights so hard against the proliferation of nuclear weapons, because we used them, and we watched our dark tools turn lives and cities to dust. In our schools, we are taught with shame the internment of Japanese Americans, and that our panicked leaders ever convinced themselves to overwrite our constitution in this way astounds us. So many of our younger generations are so in love with Japanese culture that another fight between us seems not just unlikely, but absurd. Our nations may be strange brothers, but brother we are, still.

      Harry S. Truman, the president who ordered the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, was part of the democratic party. Has Trump actually started any wars? Or has he been trying to end wars that were started before he came into office by pulling the troops back?

    It is an extremely difficult endeavour to visit and give a speech in a city that is the face of arguably the worst atrocity that you country has ever committed. It is equally as difficult to speak on the subject without admitting fault outright but still sound compassionate. This is a really powerful moment in history. My heart breaks for what the Japanese suffered. I respect President Obama for having the courage to face the people who suffered the consequences of his government's decisions.

    As J. Cole said - It took a black president to tell the Japanese "Sorry".
    Edit: Before this turns into anything major, the above quote is a song lyric. It’s artistic/creative liberty. J. Cole and I both know that President Obama did not apologize for the USA’s decision during wartime. The lyric is essentially representing the fact that Obama was the first sitting United States President to address the human tragedy that occured that day. And while he did not apologize, he did acknowledge the immense suffering and pain that his country and predecessor inflicted upon them. Hopefully this gives a bit more context.

      He did not show that he was apologetic. What he showed was empathy and understanding. You can both think something ought to have happened and think that it was sad and tragic. Nothing he said at all makes me think he was trying to be apologetic.
