Hi there! I am a professional landscape designer, please do not make the front plant beds smaller🙏 the larger the better. You do not want to plant your shrubs too close to your house ...those hydrangea in your previous pic are at least 5’ round prepare for the plants to grow and you don’t want them touching the house, and you want layering with flowers so you will need the space. Also the tree included will look much better. The larger the beds the larger your house looks, there must be balance 😍

As much as I love your home in L.A. - there is something so very special about this cottage. I'm not sure if its because I love Victorian architecture and design or if its because you did so much of the renovation and construction yourself, but I absolutely love this cottage. It has so much character and the decor you have incorporated so far is just gorgeous. I love that you preserved and used materials from the original structure and I love all the vintage elements. Can't wait for this cottage to be completed. (I am obsessed with the art work in your entry.)

Now is about the right time to prune your roses, early spring cut them down to about 6 inches, they'll grow back to their height now but will produce a lot more roses. If you cut your ferns all the way down to the dirt it will come back! Just fertilize everything. Hope you feel better

  • @gaildavidson7184

Consider putting in a “gate/door” at the end of the front porch so you can easily get to the back yard. You can put down stepping stones in the flowerbed.

    • @lyndaandrian7204

Oh yea, great idea making the end railing a gate

    • @Beruthiel45
      @Beruthiel45 Рік тому

That was my thought too as she was describing the railings. Very annoying having to have to use the front steps. You can make a discreet gate on that end so it's visually railed, but you can pop open the gate and have easier side access. A step and stone slab or pebbles on the ground to avoid dirty feet and it will be much more convenient. I hope she ses this! 😊

If you cut the ferns way back in the spring and put them under a tree or somewhere in the shade they will come back! You may need to deadwood them and repot but they can come back from this! I agree with the landscaper about keeping the original footprint to the flowerbeds! It will create a grander entrance and less grass to mow! The bed will look really good with a pine straw or cedar chip underlay! The cedar chips also ward off termites!

Recommend staining back porch - more durable than paint & can get shade to match front porch. Would also advise against separating tree in front from rest of flower bed. The less you have to mow around, the better. Once you get shrubs, etc. in place you'll see that bed won't look so big with the tree included in it.

I did something for my christmas tree that was a game changer!!!!! After years of cardboard boxes and bags ripping...... I bought one of those plastic patio cushion benches that has a hinged top. You use it to store the cushions over the winter. Well, I have it in the garage with my christmas tree in it. I have a regular tree and a slim tree in it. Then I can put bins on top for other holiday storage. Looks neat and compact and organized.

*@liane abeyta...purely a GENIUS IDEA❣️ THANK YOU so very much for sharing this stroke of BRILLIANCE with us‼️ Tree bags are a poor solution...mice chewed through my tree bag I had stored inside my garage and they snuggled up and made nests in the tree branches of my EXPENSIVE pre-lit tree - chewed the wires and pooped 💩 and peed all over it during the long winter months we have here in Minnesota. (After researching, I discovered the reason the mice chewed the wiring is for the SALT that is in the wiring‼️🙈🙉😡) It was SO NASTY - I had to throw everything OUT‼️😡*

Don't forget a entrance you can get things like heavy packages in and threw your house. You still have possible large items like bathtubs coming. Then in the future you could have new furniture pieces or if appliances break. Example at you gate you need a type of gradual slop maybe a poured colored concert that a dolly or wheel charge ,.... Baby stroller can rool on the steps of your porch you may need to design something that goes to side of porch.

I agree the front needs to be worked on every day that the weather good. Rainy and cold days can be the best time for whatever room you decide to tackle first. Of course when its warmer outside, get as much wood cut so its waiting for you to use inside. Poor thing, I hope you are feeling better soon. You have been s busy lately, your body was worn out. Take your vitamins and eat!!

OMG that space between the exhaust fan and the window, was driving me crazy. I swear I spend the whole time looking at it, I guess I’m a perfectionist just like you. It’s such a relief that you’re going to tackle that hahaha

My husband and I were diagnosed with severe upper respiratory infections. We tested negative (several times) for "the c word" and the flu but we felt like we had something more serious. We didn't get our energy back for 2 months, but to be honest, I'm still not 100%. Make sure you're getting plenty of rest and drinking all the water. Get better soon, Gorgeous!!

Those lilies are called stargazer lilies. They are my favorites as well. I love the way they smell. When they open, make sure to take the fuzzy ends of the stamens off because the stain badly if they get on fabric.

*@stacyola...yeah, those pollen-laden anthers can really stain and make a mess...even on wood or granite or marble...ask me how I know, LOL‼️😔🤣*

Suggestion for content for the next time you can’t physically do renovation work: have subscribers send pics of spaces and make suggestions for how you would style them!

I think making that list was a great idea!! I’d personally start doing some of the smaller projects first, like finishing the back porch doors, projects that you don’t really have questions on & you know exactly what you need to do! Looking forward to seeing y’all’s awesome work! So proud of you! 🥰🥰

I agree and that would give you more time to get stronger. I was really sick with this "A" Influenza, ended up doing 3 days in hospital. I feel fantastic after being so sick and the hard thing is to not plunge in and get a relapse. I do *not* want more of this! And this of course is one of our "big girl" skills when we learn how to pace ourselves. Not that at 78 I haven't learned it some - but it's still an effort;)

I don't know if you said it or not, you probably did and I just didn't catch it, but don't forget to put sealer on the window trim and sill in the kitchen!
So excited for the renovations to continue! Get well soon x
