Having owned a series 1 and 2, with many modifications I can safely say there are several modifications that are common in the USA that will make you absolutely love the KLR. I did a 635 kit which was wonderful for the price. Wonderful videos...keep up the good work!

I own a gen 3, 2023 model. Fuel injection, better brakes and engine water pump issues have all been addressed. In Australia where I'm from, the KLR is the adventure bike of choice for long trips and serious riders. It's an extremely reliable motorcycle with a proven design. The front brake is still quite weak on late models. But in off road riding that is a bonus as you don't lock the front wheel. I really like your channel. It's nice to see a European point of view.

I bought a base model new 2024 for dirt cheap $5500USD plus freight and TTL. I like the uncomplicated nature of the KLR. It also has very comfortable ergonomics. The wide seat and huge gas tank is awesome.
I should mention the Gen 3 bikes have decent brakes.

You could try the Honda Dominator next, that is a fitting comparison to the KLR.

Had a gen 2, sold it a few years ago and I still regret it... I might have to get another one of these days, but I think I would like to try a first gen next time around.

we do not tend to use the rear brake in the states anymore than other parts of the world. Just an fyi:) My 1988 has ~85K and is still running strong.

They're legendary here in North America, not even that cheap, they surged in prices during Covid, even older ones are still 2500$ (CAD) Most of the older bike I ride I use both the front and rear brake while stopping (like a Mountain bike) I see later KLR's did get larger front brakes.

    • @Terraceview

You can almost double that in Australia, but everything is overpriced here.

dont know about KLR but my uncle had a single cylinder dominator from the 90's and he said he had to sell it because it vibrated so much thru the seat, when he got to his destination his whole ass was numb. and he wasnt the type to complain easily, lol. so i can only imagine how much these big single cyl old bikes vibrate. probably only good on a farm for short trips

Having rust in the tank might be how it is when you buy a used bike. With that said...NO! it is not how it remains once it's yours. Who would leave that crap in the tank and then decide to go on a ride? Klrs are one of the only bikes where you gain street cred due to pitty. Even harley guys have been known to wave at passing klr riders out of sympathy.
The bikes are such terds that You have to start planning to pass the day before in order to get around anyone. The one bright spot is that cops know you'll always beat a speeding ticket thus, they're rarely issued. The officer would get laughed out of the court room the minute the judge finds out you were riding a klr. No person ever, in the history of riding has ever said:
" Remember that time that klr flew by us". Conversely, I have heard klr pilots say: " I can't believe that jogger beat us to the top of the hill".
All jokes aside, the klr has no business being called a motorcyle it's like a wheel barrow with a lawnmower engine strapped to it. Seriously though, if you want to have the least amount of thrills getting from point A to B ....hands down klr is the best way to go.
The bike itself is the least expensive part of the package. I found a used one where the seat and suspension cost more than the actual bike itself. Of course I bought it. The engine purrs like a sewing maching stiching sheets of aluminum.
Gen1 is the only way to go. The weight savings alone over the newer models is the best upgrade possible.
