    Alec you dont realize how much of an inspiration you are too me and part of the reason I started blacksmithing. You helped me learn so much I couldn't have learned anywhere else. Ive never missed a video and have never been so excited to learn about something untill i stumbled upon your playlist of the war hammer. I hope you, Sam, and Jamie the best of luck in the business.

      @ScrewDriverxxx 6 років тому +1

      Not sure I understand the question. I thought I'd throw in a "thanks" because I have been banging on about poor video quality in earlier episodes and it has been addressed. Post production and non linear editing was my job with FCP being my speciality. Most people really have no idea just how difficult it is to bang out video at this rate and at this quality.

    As far as eye protection, flying metal is known to curve in funny directions, so having side shields on your eyewear is a really good idea. Especially if you’re using any kind of grinder.

    • @BennettTheSmith
      @BennettTheSmith 6 років тому +3

      YEP, can confirm. I used a full-face respirator these days, even when I don't really need the air filtration. I've even had ricochets go around a normal face shield, but the "full-face" respirator seals all the way around.

      genisis53... Yup, I'd like to echo that concern. 30yrs as a welder fabricator, grinding and beating metal into desired shapes has taught me that, I've had too many close calls to argue otherwise....

      Roem Daug no, thats how smiths me included hold workpieces during processes that require two hands. its useful not stupid. steel is a poor conductor so the part between your legs is usually cool.

    Love the safety talk. I'm one of those weird sportbike guys with a medical kit under my seat (tools be damned) because I'm usually out there dragging knees all by myself... and bad things can happen when you're going fast. Never had to use the kit on myself, but a few other riders have benefited from my preparedness.
    Always wear your safety gear, kids... your bones aren't that hard, and your skin comes right off.

    • @georgesaliz8727
      @georgesaliz8727 6 років тому +1

      The Warp Rider I rode my bike going about 15 mph and skinned the crap out of both knees, I can't imagine why anyone riding a motorcycle wouldn't be prepared.

    • @ShaneWalta
      @ShaneWalta 6 років тому +2

      The Warp Rider I work night shifts in a hotel, and always have a CPR face mask in a little pouch on my belt. I prefer answering the questions about what it is, and getting the weird looks that result from me answering those questions, to the idea of telling the family of someone who isn't breathing to hang on for a couple of minutes while I run and get a first aid kit.

I follow Sam's channel, and I know you've been helping him out behind the scenes when he needs certain tools, equipment, and such. It is refreshing in this day and age to see two great guys go their separate ways under less than ideal conditions, and still manage to not only remain civil, but actually continue to have a constructive and even occasionally FUN working relationship! Both of you are great role models for your fans. Colour me impressed...

    You mean I waited 3 days and got an EXTRA LONG VIDEO???!?? Alec, sweat for me daddy. You've inspired me to start smithing. But, I'm going to do it all wrong. I've got no tools, no forge, no anvil, but there's a place you can pay to play with steel (a makers space) and I think I'm gonna go for making a Spear tip and maybe some arrowheads first.

    • @nathansforge
      @nathansforge 6 років тому +3

      The Drunken Basterd those two projects, a spear tip and an arrowhead, are both fairly difficult projects if you do a forged socket. I would start by making S hooks and leaves even if they aren’t nearly as cool or interesting as the others

    • @cardinalbiggles1
      @cardinalbiggles1 6 років тому +2

      I bought the beginners class on beginblacksmithing.com that Alec made, and he does a really good run down of some really cheap ways to get started, and good projects to start learning the basic skills. If you stick with it, you'll definitely want to out-grow the tools he goes over, but it's definitely possible to get started for less than you might think. Having said that, supporting local makerspaces is also awesome, so either way, it's a win!

      ukezi glass glases are even worse... see they protect you from the small sparks but if somthing flies at your eye the glades are going to shatter and all that glass is going into your eye. Much worse then just 1 thing. Saftey glases must be impact resistant.

    • @Angelos42
      @Angelos42 6 років тому +1

      Almost no glasses in modern glasses are still made of glass (yes I am aware that might be a confusing sentence :P ), a lot of modern glasses use a material that will not shatter and is more scratch resistant. (I should know, I have been wearing glasses for over half my life now)

    I think the metal bands near the wrist need to be further away or it could apply pretty heavy force to your joints in a biomechanically... suboptimal angle. I see many hilts like this only swept bellow the starting point on the true edge side, to leave room for wrist movement.

    • @Swordsman3D
      @Swordsman3D 6 років тому +2

      I agree, it also seems a trifle bit too low on the back of the wrist, I feel as though it may knock your wrist about and force a certain grip on the sword.

    I really like this series. Also like how you publish your mistakes. No one's perfect, so seeing a skilled blacksmith learning from mistakes as a teaching tool too, is very respectable.

    Can you please make a full mental walk-through of how you designed that hilt and figured out the placement of the quillions and bars? Or did you make it up as you went? Because it's absolutely gorgeous and it boggles my mind how you saw that in the piece before bending.

    It’s very nice (the basket) I think 4 square bars turned on the lathe at each end leaving 45mm still square in the middle , then gently fire weld the square section to a solid , would have been a nice marriage of machining and forging and that’s the truth behind any edge weapon since we first made them !
    3 days forging and corrections could have been 4 hours precision work and no less a demonstration of skills .
    Some fire clay would have protected the nice clean turned steel then removed easily after welding courses .
    Food for thought .

    Alec, where you been, man?
    Good to see Sam back in the beater role and in the shop.
    Have you considered media blasting to remove the scale? Sand, glass beads, walnut shells, or sodium bicarbonate? I am amazed you don't have a blasting cabinet in your shop. Any way, see you next time.

    Seriously wow, Alec, it shows how much WORK those ancient swordsmiths had to put in! And, as you say, without all the tech you have today. Factoid, in Scotland, a sword maker was known as a "sword slipper"! Dunno what that says about it, but always fascinating to learn new stuff about crafts!

      Normal steel isn't that conductive to heat so you can put it there no problem, this type is probably way more conductive and also shorter...

    My life has kinda sucked lately. There have been days that I am just pissed off for no reason. Then I start one of your videos (or I binge a whole project series) and I feel better. I think it's because you have such a passion for what you do and you are always happy to be swinging a hammer on some hot Steele.

    Loving the work you’re doing on The Rapier! Also greatly appreciated the safety talk about the mushrooming on the chisel. I would like to point out that using a tourniquet could potentially be really bad as it would, yes, stop the bleeding, but also cuts off all blood flow to the rest of your limb. That could cause you to, worse case scenario, have to be amputated as your nerves would die from lack of oxygen. The best thing anyone can do to a cut or abrasion is to put pressure on it with a cloth or bandage. Keep up the great work, Alec and I can’t wait to see this finished!

    Good tips about saftey. I would have been blind, were it not for saftey googles. An faulty disk on the angle grinder exploded as soon as I started the machine. The googles were wrecked, but I got away with the wife doing some washing and aply some bandage in my face.

    Alec, thanks for the bit on mushroomed tools! It is really important! My dad was a company safety inspector and he had to investigate an accidental death. Turns out a piece of the bent over edge of a chisel did fly off and actually pierce a leather apron, and strike the person into the heart. Other than that, hitting on a mushroomed edge just wastes energy. Do keep those tools in shape!
