  • Depart Los Angeles harbor aboard the Lurline for the five day crossing to Honolulu. We stayed at the Royal Hawaiian, one of three hotels on Waikiki. Yes, that is a picture of Duke Kahanamoku, who watched me part of the day while my parents attended a conference. He competed on the US Olympic Swim Team in 1912, 1920 and 1924 and won gold in two games.
Then to Maui where we stayed at Hana, before continuing to the Big Island. Mauna Loa had just erupted and flows had crossed the main highway and lava was still hot enough to burn the soles of your shoes. The last few pics were taken on the Garden Island - Kauai. We returned from Honolulu to Los Angeles on the inaugural overnight flight of United's Stratocruiser. You'll recognize the voice as the great Hawaiian singer, Israel Kamakawiwo'ole - IZ.

Great slide show. it brings back so many great memories of Hawaii, sailing on the Lurline and Matsonia before planes were a big thing, hanging on Waikiki Beach before it was ruined by development..... thanks for the memories.

Wonderful video/slide show, David. Beautifully done! How fortunate you are to have seen Hawai'i in those bygone days. Hawai'i is still a beautiful place, but "progress" has diminished some of the great history and culture of Hawaiian people. Mahalo for sharing this great video. Aloha!

Wonderful video. Thanks for posting. Oahu and Maui today are overdeveloped and over commercialized, and home to many more people than the islands can accommodate. Such a shame that the people in control see only $$.

I was fortunate enough to have lived on Oahu in 1958. My father was developing a branch of his electrical contracting
business. This video brings back some very sweet memories. However, when I see pictures and videos of Oahu
today I get sick. It looks like New York! The islands' planning commissions have allowed this island to be ruined! Shame on them.

Does anyone out there remember eating at the Pearl City Tavern? I recall all the great food. My mom loved that place. The 'Don the Beachcomber' in Waikiki and Trader Vik's.
Sadly all gone. Waikiki has turned into a noisy overrun place with strange street crowd. No more 'easy', lovely old Hawaiian way of living and doing things. I think the Banyan court at the Moana has been taken over by the 20 something crowd.

Beautiful and memorable pictures of a less developed and more beautiful Hawai‘i than today. I wish I could've been alive to see it then. I wish I knew where all the Hawaiians were during that time. (I mean the real Hawaiians not the ones at Waikīkī).

I was born in Honolulu in 1950. Thanks for sharing this. My parents were there in 41. Dad in army, mom had her own taxi in Honolulu. That was another day for sure. This makes me homesick in a big way. We lived in Kailua, Oahu and my parents drove that old Pali road many times! Oh how it's changed. I remember in 61 there were still only two hotels in Waikiki. Dave...it was great catching up with you and the guys. It has been a while!! I truly enjoyed your video with IZ's accompaniment of What A Wonderful World. My family and i might have been on that Lurline trip. We were just returning to Hawaii after my father completed law school and he, my mother, Irmgard Farden Aluli and my brother, sister and I sailed back to Hawaii on the Lurline also in 1950. The 50s and 60s were such a wonderful time in Hawaii. These are still beautiful islands to live in but times they are a changing. Now with the coronavirus it is almost like it was back in the 60s, uncrowded beaches, very little traffic. Unfortunately it also means a struggling economy. We need to have the visitors return to our islands but hopefully in a way that is complimentary and respectful of the precious resources we have here. Take care and MAHALO for the wonderful memories..

For those interested in the accompanying music, it is misidentified by UA-cam as *What A Wonderful World (Medley)*. The song is actually *Kaulana Kawaihae*.
I really love seeing videos and slide shows of Hawaii- past. I often try to imagine what it must have been like before I lived there. I lived on O'ahu from 1978 to 2000, so I've seen a lot of changes there for myself. Plus, with the couple of visits I've made since returning to the mainland, I've seen some big and unwelcome changes to O'ahu since I left. In spite of all that, I still desire to return to stay. After all, when people ask me what I miss most about the islands, my answer is always the people and the Hawaiian culture. My heart and my home will always be there.

I traveled with the football team in 1965 to Las Vegas where they beat the Nevada state championship team - with nothing but determination and guts! When we returned to Honolulu, I became good friends with Coach Tom Kiyosaki and spent a lot of time with the team. I have never forgotten some of the great player - Stan Cadiente, Tom Gushiken, Walter Rodrigues, John Kameenui, and Ambrose Costa. I lived near Kaimuki for a number of years when I was elementary school age (Liliuokalani). I returned to Mainland in fall of 1965, imagining I would return to Hawaii as an adult. By the time I would have been able to return, the things others were saying after moving or visiting there caused me shock and dismay. I simply do not understand why anyone would want or need to do illegal drugs in order to have a nice time in Hawaii. I throve on the relaxed and easygoing lifestyle as a child, but this is ridiculous. Nonetheless I enjoyed your beautiful video and pleasant music. Almost as good as a time machine!

What was the third hotel, Halekulani? This was when I transferred to a mainland college, in 1953. I returned after I graduated from college and it was wall to wall hotel. I left Hawaii for two years and everything fell apart, when I was gone. I turned around and went to live and work in the then Golden California (LA ). It also fell apart, so I left in 1972.
