  • We recently discovered several vintage 16mm films depicting old Hawaii. The films were originally taken by an unknown photographer for his own personal enjoyment while on his way from San Jose to Austrailia in 1940. We purchased them at a garage sale at the house at an old local orchardist. The films were converted to digital by volunteers from the California Pioneers of Santa Clara County who used their telecine processor to preserve historic images at no charge. Thank you!
This seventh installment focuses on the island of Oahu, especially upon the famous Kodak Hula Show in Waikiki as well as visits to various temples along the Nu'uanu. Included in his original edit were a few additional shots from a later trip circa 1952. All Rights Reserved.

Thank you for sharing this film. It brings back to much memories. Now there is no country and building are going up too fast. I miss the old Hawaii.

Our family used to go to San Souci, adjacent to the Natatorium to picnic and watch the Kodak Hula Show and the tourists. Happy times even for the occasional WWII barbed wire remnants buried in the sand that would pierce our bare feet (shoes? what shoes?) Love seeing the circa 50's... everything, the clothes, UH, downtown, etc. Mahalo Nui Loa with warmest Aloha for sharing and making my day. (sniff!)

Gotta love the steam ship in the background at 1:26!
It's also nice to see all the healthy looking people. You can tell this is long before the rest of the world brought all the garbage food to Hawaii that they eat today.

Nice to see film of Hilo Hattie actually performing (she is now just the symbol of a clothing store). Also I see elements of the Kodak Hula Show (including "Pounding, Pounding, Pounding Poi").

I think some of the boats in this video at Ala Wai Harbor are still there today.
