I remember Oahu only from the late Thirties till the early Fifties, mostly around Kalihi Kai and Keehi Lagoon. Anything west of Kalihi Kai was country side. Moanalua Gardens had acres of gardens and taro patch. Salt Lake was really a lake until it got filled.
My half sisters maternal grandfather Harry Kim was born in Hawaii in 1938 to a 2nd generation Korean Hawaiian father and a Chinese-Native Hawaiian mother, they were both born in the early 1900's and lived into their 90s! Now I can finally see the Hawaii they always told us stories about!
@@howellwong11 Bette Midler criticized Melania Trump for her dialect whenever she spoke. Many people in Hawaii have a dialect or speak pidgin English. I would not consider Bette Midler a good source on that. Did you know about the Massie murders? Lots of racism existed from the earlier part of Hawaii's history.
That is true. I would refer people to the Massie murders, etc. to realize the racism that has existed for many years. Moreover, the hula was banned in 1820. Hawaiian was not allowed to be spoken in school, etc
Great film.
Good. Thanks a bunch for this.

Note that the Japanese and Hawaiian s are discrimninated against.
Really. In my days (prior to 1953), it was locals against the haoles. You can ask Bette Midler about it.
