This is pretty commonly done in the bonsai-community. A lot of the time the stem is cut back to where it doesn't even have leaves. This kind of hard pruning is only done in the spring though, when it has woken up from dormancy. Plants and trees have a really strong desire to live, so new shoots will come back in, as long as it's done in spring at the start of the growing season. I have a couple of Ficus Microcarpa that I'll give a hard prune in a month or so.

Hard pruning activates the dormant nodes within the plant, as the plant has an abundance of energy stored within the roots ready for the growing season.
Also calatheas/spiders need to be thinned out every once in a while, you use the process of one in every three stems removed. Helps with airflow through the plant.

I do have a tip. Try to resist the urge to remove the latex sap off the flf, it is its defense mechanism to ward off damaging bacteria and heal its wound ;)

Love these vids! I am tough with jade plants.. snip, snip, snip.. got to be extra tough though and throw all the branches away instead of ending up with tons more jade plants.. 🌿😆 and have never ever disinfected any chopping tools.. 🤷🏻♀️🤭

I have to trim my Fiddle Leaf. It looks like 3 sticks in a pot with leaves on top. My question is should I cut the tops and wait for new growth to repot ??? It also needs a repot (again) and I dont want to do more than 1 thing at a time. Enjoy all your videos !! ✌🏻❤️

The timing of this video could not be any better. I bought a fiddle leaf fig last week and noticed all the leaves were going brown, due to the cold weather last week while it was waiting to be delivered. I cut it down almost to the bottom. Just waiting for the results. I did get a replacement this week.
They are not happy plants even moving from different rooms in your home either. The plant has trauma - plant shock. It should grow leaves again soon while it acclimates to its new environment. Mine dropped a few leaves when the heat went one constantly a few weeks ago because it just knows something is different. They are picky rather finicky plants but I love them just the same!
It's good you've got a replacement. The old one will be fine i bet once it recovers
my ficus elastic was growing tall and spindley, so i followed your advice and popped off the top buds as it was at the height i wanted. now it has become much fuller along both trunks. thanks so much!

No he just sat on my windowsill. I was surprised he sent out growth in winter too.

Did this to my schefflera and to my aphellandra squarrosa. I was praying for 2 months, especially with that aphellandra, and new shoots came out. Looks way better ❤️ also, for anyone with troubling schefflera, put her in a window to a direct light, you'll have so much new growth you won't believe 😅 ever since I moved her with 3 leaves, after 3 months we're on 13th leaf

@@SheffieldMadePlants it definitely worked for me, schefflera is in N facing window (southern hemisphere) and aphellandra lives in SE facing bathroom. Also, you may be lucky enough to propagate wetsticks from both. However, with aphellandra my success rate was about 30% compared to 75% with schefflera 😉 thank you for your content

My adenium has definitely done the one new branch post cut multiple times 😂 It took me 3 attempts before it finally rewarded me 6 news branches.
With all caudex plants, your cuttings won't grow a caudex... but if you are a risk taker, you can root train your cuttings to still give you a cool shape.

Spring is best but can be done in winter. Depends on your light
I actually did this to my Ficus Elastica Tineke last year. It was about 4" but not its past 6". Keep growing Richard!

I pruned my Rhaphidophora tetrasperma, which is known as mini monstera but it is not actually a monstera, and both mother and propagation are healthy but stopped growing (it's been about 5 months most of which were winter so maybe that's why). Did I doom it?
Generally, I would love a video about the mini monstera (aka mini split-leaf, Ginny philodendron, and probably other names too) and how its care differs from a monstera

I've done it to a couple of ficus elastica. It rotted from where I cut it on both my burgundy and my tikniki. I did use clean cutters.

Saved my China Doll using this method.
Soon, as soon as I’m brave enough, I’ve got to do a serious chop on my ficus altissima. It’s four feet tall on a single stem with one single side branch from notching low down and super strange uneven internodel gaps. My question for you is, shall I notch at the same time, or wait a while?
I had to do a shocking hard prune on my massive 50+ year old ficus benjamina. It had horrible stem rot and my first few weak attempts didn’t work. It still looks pretty weird, but full and weird. I mean, it’s a house plant that’s literally older than I am, so, it’s going to look weird.
Sounds like it's ripe for a chop. You could try notching first

Just dab the latex while it is coming out but nothing else. But could be a sensible option to protect it properly

Can I prune my cordyline tango like this? It lost all it's leafs and only has some on the top of the plants (plant is app. 80cm high and 60cm bare stem). Does it live if I cut the crown with leafs completely off and try to propagate it? What should I do? 😬
Yes it should work well. If you propagate then you've not lost anything

Wondering if you think it's too late in the season for a hard prune like this on a comatose philodendron that can't seem to unfurl leaves this year? I'd prefer to cut the bottom down to 0 leaves and propagate/replant the whole top, but worried I'll kill one or both halves, as I've heard this must be done in early spring. Any thoughts?
