  • In the heart of the 2022/23 winter season, one of the biggest snow seasons on record, Wyoming's Teton County Search & Rescue experienced five backcountry rescues in five days. Why? Lack of knowledge? Heuristic traps? Social media creating false confidence? Sheer bad luck?
In partnership with Friends of Bridger-Teton, TGR presents Backcountry Responsibly, a digital film targeted at the growing number of winter backcountry users whose impact on the surrounding public lands has increased dramatically in recent years.

Seriously? Teton Gravity Research has spent many years monetizing and glamorizing questionable behavior.

They are also glamorizing climate destroying practices while hypocritically spewing information about "protecting our winters"

Its TGR and everybody posting pics and vids of backcountry skiing fault. Yall are the reason places are getting so crowded and luring more idiots into the wilderness

Perishable skills. Make a rescue refresher an annual event for the sake of yourself and your friends.

I think it would be valuable to have more avalanche centers covering more ranges. Especially beyond the highly trafficked areas. I’m not sure how it would be funded.
My first trip skiing in the backcountry was in the Bighorn Mountains in north central Wyoming. When doing my research I noticed they didn’t have an avalanche center or forecast. So my partners and I stuck to low angle non-avy terrain. We still had fun but the more information the better.

No doubt this video is well intended but I agree with other comments that if you keep churning out backcountry porn, how can you be surprised when it attracts a bunch of Jerry / Rodneys who buy an airbag and a beeper and think it’s all good bro? I’ve definitely seen some dangerous idiots in the backcountry during my 35 years in the mountains, and though the importance of education and experience cant be overstated, there’s always inherent risk no matter who you are. TGR and others do a great job of making it look amazing, so of course any number of yahoos are going to want it. So thanks for encouraging people to gain skills but I still think the answer to the question you pose in your title is ‘you can’t forget what you never knew.’
