This captures what makes Alta truly different - a mountain for skiers based on fabulous snow. I skied there more than 100 days in the 1980's and I can attest that the footage of waist deep powder isn't staged. I knew I'd found something unusual when I saw local high school hot shots showing up with snorkels on the big powder days. No one goes there for the scene, just for the skiing and yes, the place does have a unique soul. I've skied all over the U.S., Canada, and Europe. Alta is the best.
Started skiing there in the 60's. My father was ski patrol there for ten years. Got to go skiing with Stein, Alf, Dick Bass, Mel Dalebot, Warren Miller, and Suzy Chaffic, to name some of the legendary skiers of the day. My dad's ashes are scattered on Sugarloaf. It's still my favorite resort.
My second year skiing, I was 16 and got a seasons pass at Alta. I vividly recall the run that my friend and I figured out how to ski powder. It had been taught to me, but it was on that run, down Greeley Bowl that we both figured it out. That unlocked a whole new world.
For the first 20 years of my life, I had no clue how lucky I was growin up on the bench. Now I’m writing this while sitting in lil Hollywood traffic. I hear Texas has better skiing than Utah. So you should go there
People come from all over the world to SKI Alta. Not a snowboarder in sight. That's just fine with me. Skied a waist deep day there. The comment about not being connected to the earth is spot on. Closest thing to flying like a bird. A truly spiritual experience.
This made me so homesick. I moved away a couple of years ago and I miss this place. I loved going to Alta year round. Growing up in Salt Lake I spent lots of time up there. The memories this brought back are wonderful. Now if the Canyon Inn would do a flashback video I could revisit some of the best times of my life when needed 😊
@@AltaSkiArea Understood, and I totally get it (and love that Alta doesn't market itself the way every other resort now does). Love the video though, watched 3 times and have nearly cried every watch lol.
Just had a great powder day at Alta. The place has soul for sure! Does anyone know the Artist/title of the song @2:30? It doesn’t seem to be credited in the info section.
What i love about alta is that once you become a local (and this is different from any other place i have ever been) you are expected to act like a host for all the visitors. The ethos of politeness and community is what makes Alta extra special. Now about those icon passes?

Love it - I felt a similar thing in Revelstoke, BC.
I'm from Alaska & when I was a kid my Dad took us on a ski trip to Utah, I remember Alta was our favorite. The whole no snowboards thing is weird though.
Lol. You talk about there being division in the world and Alta offers a place for "connection to the snow" (13:10) but YOU LITERALLY KEEP GROUPS OF PEOPLE DIVIDED and you exclude people from accessing the mountain so they ARE NOT ALLOWED TO HAVE ANY CONNECTION TO THE SNOW.
Don't yell into the void. They don't care. So why should we. Look how many subs they have. Look at inclusive mountains like Jackson even their youtube channel is crushing them. Abasin same thing. If you really want to give the bird just go hike it.
@@DanPrescott I don’t disagree with you, and I have hiked Alta many times. I just wanted them to know that their video is dumb and misleading. But they know they suck.
I watch this video a couple time a month while I wait for next season meanwhile I am still skiing your snow in July just wish I had a lift. I think keep wildcat open so it ain’t as long of a walk to ski main in July.
I havent seen Alta since 1978. I was working at Snowbird. Alta's low key style was wonderful. it was not at that time [yet] ruined by the look of money and wealth and exclusivity, that fancy commercial glam BS that is so common at top operations. I hope Alta has not changed. I prefer X-C because it allows me to take in the most important things while the focus on downhill is to go fast and dominate the mountains. To be close to the incredible beauty of the mountains is why I X-C ski.
Never seen so much corn in a powder skiing movie. The soul of Alta is the mandatory skis on hikes and the technical traverses with Caligula skiiers passing you as they fiend for mostly skied out runs.
Lets make our skis the same size as a snowboards and say snowboards have no place here. What a joke Alta is just more stuck up boomers still gatekeeping good lift access terrain.
I will say as a Snowboarder growing up I hated Alta. I skied there for the first time last year, of course the season was epic, I loved it. I'm not sure if not having boarders on the mountain helps preserve the runs any better, but it was worth learning to ski to go up there. It is a great mountain.
A nice film. A great ski area. As someone who both skis and snowboards your line about setting aside division feels self serving and hypocritical. I love skiing there, it's truly awesome, but the owners of Alta are last in line for taking any moral high ground where "sowing division" is concerned. You could easily left out that cringeworthy line and been fine.
I’m just glad that there’s places where all of the clueless skiers can flock to. lol Also, the argument that snowboards are more destructive to the terrain/snow surface is just a myth that was created by skiers. Science has proven that both skis and snowboards create the same amount of damage to the terrain. Skiers are weird.
I'm guessing you are saying this because half of Alta would be unavailable to snowboarders due to their inability to effectively make long traverses. Anyhow, if a grandmother can learn to ride a snowboard, you can learn to ski, that is if you are in fact really interested in experiencing Alta.
Alta allowed snowboards in 1985, but they were discontinued the following winter, per a recent Deseret News article, "the snowboarders were miserable and the skiers were annoyed". The reality is that snowboards are terrible for traversing, it's also hard to snowboard uphill in 8" of new snow along a ridge line with your feet bolted together. Skis were invented at least 2,000 years ago as over snow transportation, and you still have to use them that way at Alta.
It's the same kind of close minded people that honestly we are better off not interacting with. It's like every snob at a country club mentality. There is ZERO reason why they should exclude at this point. It's pure snobbery. I won't liken it to certain political situations but you get it.
Marketers must be getting pressured to boost sales for alta being that its jan already and little if any snow has fallen . Sales must be way down. They figure "lets get back to our roots" marketing might trigger ticket sales. I have suggestion how about reducing ticket prices to pre 2000. Under 40.00. Good ole.days burger wed for 1.00 at half way lodge.🍔🍔
I like skiing Alta but what a weird, outdated form of discrimination to ban snowboarders. Clearly you are stuck in the 80s in a fight against hotdoggers and hooligans.
I'm primarily an Alpine skier, but I'm guessing I've been snowboarding longer than somewhere around 99% of the snowboarders in Utah, 1986. Snowboards suck on traverses, you would be like a beached whale on the High T. FYI, Alta also does not allow ski bikes.
Alta sold its soul when they partnered with IKON and implemented paid/reserved parking. not to mention the fact that they are snowboard racists operating on public US forest service land
