Note how Vin Scully, at the crack of the bat, said "And there it goes...." and nothing else until Gibby had returned to the dugout, letting the picture, the players, and the crowd fill in the story. What a great announcer.
It's amazing 40 years have gone by & they've never won it again. The Royals won it the next year in 1985 & they went 30 years until 2015 until they won another one. In 1986 the Mets won it all & it's been 38 years since they've won one. In 1987 & 1991 the Twins won them. Now it's been 33 years since they've won one. Teaches us as baseball fans to NEVER take it for granted when you're favorite team is really good & winning. It could be a long time before it happens again. Believe me, I know as a Mets fan.
I gotta say, My Dad was probably glad we were in the upper deck deck on the 1B line to get us outta there. lol. I vividly remember my parents hauling me through the revelry to get to the car.. It was fun, but a bit scary. I'd never seen adults lose their mind in joy before. I remember the ramps were wild.. outside wasn't too nuts by the time we bailed.
That roar at Tiger Stadium when Gibby hits the 3 run bomb off Gossage in the 8th sounds like a mighty wind, a tornado across an open prairie. No sound like it anywhere. It elicits fear. 🐯 ⚾️
That's awesome! Did he ever talk about it with you? I imagine this team was ridiculously fun to play for. This team, the 2013 Red Sox, 1988 Dodgers, and 1979 Pirates seem like the most fun teams ever. Had to edit: it was the 79 Pirates not 78. Typo...
Absolutely, what a group of ball players. They were something else, pitching, hitting, and defense. The love of the game, respect for Sparky, and the fun they had!! Great memories
Earlier that day, Bob Costas was in New York hosting NFL 84 pre game show then after the show, Bob took a flight to Detroit for post game should the Tigers win which they did.

First off, the utter Genius of Vin Scully to just shut up after "An THERE IT GOES!" Secondly, what I think a lot of people don't realize is the reason Gossage wanted to go for it, is because Gibson had never even gotten on bass versus Gossage up to that point of course. I think somebody posted it was like 13 different at-bats and Gibson never got a hit or got on base I believe
Baseball was still pure in 1984! As a lifelong Tiger fan, all I can say is "Thank you our beloved Detroit Tigers for the gift of being able to share the joy of this championship!"
It seems that the big crows years back, such in this game, were much more into the game. Maybe it was because there were a lot fewer MBL teams and there wasn't an over exposure like today.
People are busy trying to record and post things to social media now. Takes all the authentic energy out of the crowd. Those fans were living in the moment, so there was nothing else to do but get engaged in every pitch

Too bad this video doesn't mention Aurelio López's 2-1/3 innings of no-hit relief. IIRC, he threw 25 pitches and 23 were strikes including rwo called third strikes.
35-5 will NEVER be repeated!
I feel for fans that never got to see a game at Tiger Stadium... That house had a power to it. Many summers going to games there. It was pure.

Larry's Homer in San Diego earlier in the series was the spark that sealed an early series victory for Detroit. No quiet series for the quiet Man!
