It's amazing the songs that keep popping up from live events and never a single
video released. There has to be some somewhere, so there must be a reason why
there is never any video footage available of the band actually playing a song that
is shown with accompanying footage, with one or 2 exceptions (jams). Maybe there
is a long story I have yet to hear, but some video footage has to exist but is not
being allowed to be released. I have been waiting for years, but it never happens.

I'm waiting for just the same thing... there is a very short section of "Venus in Furs" which I know: ua-cam.com/video/vgcuU_JWuQU/v-deo.html

I know right. you'd think if a band had an experimental movie maker as their manager.....

Doug Yule is s sorry excuse for John Cale. Once Cale was tossed from the band this type of playing just went away. The early live versions What Goes On with Cale on organ just slay in comparison to most every version with Doug Yule. They probably tried to play the song after Cale left, and Lou realized he had pushed out the true rocker of the band. The Velvet Underground was never as good without John Cale's awesome contributions. Cale gave the VU their rough edges and had enough gravitas to take on Lou. Too bad Yule ended screwing Loaded. That record would have been better with Lou singing most of the lead vocals than Doug Yule who also sanitized some of the lyrics(the Judas of the VU)

Leaving aside the fact that the stage lighting in most places was too dark for amateur movie cameras, we need to recall that before MTV (1982), most management regarded any visual representation of a band's performance as prejudicial to concert ticket sales.

im assuming it was much easier to record audio back then rather than video, for example someone could've used a reel to reel or even a cassette tape, and it presumably costed less than a camera. so coming from a viewer standpoint, it would've been hard. much stuff wasn't saved by TV stations either at the time

This is an alternate Gymnasium performance. The almost certainly actual Upbeat performance is listed on UA-cam as 'Lou Reed Guess I'm Falling in love live' with a misleading photo of the 'Psychopath's Rolling Stones' bootleg to throw you off.

"The Velvet Underground (1969) - This is believed to have been the band's only national TV appearance." From the Upbeat Wikipedia page: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Upbeat_(TV_series)

This is from the Gymnasium, 1967, not Upbeat.

That's what people have been saying for years....If it is however, they
must be listening to a copy of the Gymnasium show that I do not have as
there are no similarities when you play them side by side....
The bootleg I got it off of ages ago only said it was from aTV spot.......I learned later from someone who was familiar with the show as to its origin...

There are at least two different vocal versions.
One released on 'Peel Slowly and See' (1996). The other being unreleased.
I would like to know what the story is, being unaware of the song being played at 'Upbeat'.

Vocals/many lyrics are different from the Gymnasium version. Compare them.

The Velvets played and recorded more than one set at the Gymnasium. The first was officially released on the WL/WH 45 Anniversary Edition, and the other(s) remain unreleased save for this bootleg. The setlist of the unreleased show(s) remain unknown, save for the fact that it:they included this recording and a version of “Walk and Talk It.” Cale might still have the rest of the tapes, but given his sloppiness with rereleases, don’t expect to hear them anytime soon.

Not the Gymnasium- listen to the solos. They're different.

@@sumading I'm not the poster, and it's actually just the audio portion of the clip. Again, I'm just surmising that this is the Upbeat recording, but signs point to it being the real thing.

@@scottbrown2974 Thanks for getting back to me! I don't know if you know, but all kinds of music/VU message boards have been discussing this amazing discovery this past week. We know you are not the poster, but this all came to light when someone in the Velvet Underground forums followed your link. General consensus is that you're very likely correct - the link you posted is the real deal! Was just wondering how you happened to come upon that posting of the real Upbeat recording several months ago. There is some speculation that the video was private until very recently, but no one is really sure. And if you're interested, please come join us in the forums! Thanks.

@@sumading Please do send me links to these forums!... I wonder if Todd Haynes was able to somehow unearth the actual clip for his upcoming doc.
