Man, I always felt bad for Doug Yule. I know he was basically a "musician for hire" for the Velvets, and a lot of people will never forgive him for the 'Squeeze' album...but he was a very good musician and did A LOT for that band.

Forgive him? He save the "band" from a law sue, and made an entire album with own personality by himself. I think there's nothing to forgive.

I'd go as far to say if it wasn't for Yule's presence on the Third LP & Loaded, there's a good 50% probability (or higher) that the band would have NEVER made it into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. It was a dick move for them not to invite Yule to the ceremony at the very least, and honestly without his presence? Those latter two albums both would have suffered. Loaded alone is a masterpiece, and the reason is because of Doug Yule's playing 85% of the instrumentation and his singing on it.

Victor LaBouche nah, I slightly disagree with you. Loaded and The Velvet Underground (1969) are both fantastic albums, but the Velvets would have made it into the RNR Hall of Fame regardless with their debut album, and White Light/White Heat alone.

As far as I can tell the reason Doug Yule was frozen out of the VU R&R HOF induction was because Lou was being - to use one of his favorite epithets - "a schmuck."

I like Doug Yule. Anyone who thinks he couldn't let rip on the organ hasn't heard the performances of "What Goes On" and "Ocean" on *Live 1969*.

I don't understand why Doug isn't considered a bona fide member and contributor with The Velvet Underground. He plays on as many albums as Cale, he was a large part of their changing sound and he was an excellent addition to the band, particularly on the recorded live releases. Doug was hugely important to The Velvet Underground.

I stumbled onto this. Doug Yule needs a lot more credit than he gets.

I'm a big Doug Yule fan. He helped the progress of VU tremendously with his lead vocals, and his ability to play multiple instruments. I don't give a flying f*ck what Moe Tucker has to say about him, she doesn't even play on the "Loaded" album, it's a fact.

I feel like all the original VU albums up til Lou left are pretty much as good as each other, but if one had to edge slightly into the lead as the one I listen to the most it'd be Loaded, which is HUGELY down to Doug Yule. Dude is an absolute legend.

Doug’d have been inducted into Hall of Fame with the rest of the band. His contribution to the Velvets’ third album and Loaded are enormous.

For years I thought it was Lou reed singing the songs that Yule actually sang on loaded.

I like replacing successful members of bands and still thriving...love Cale however Yule doing his thing with bass/guitar and organ is just incredible.

he mightve been a huge square but a solid musician and man and a huge part of whats good about their last two albums. squeeze isnt a bad album as well

If Nico was inducted, Doug should have been. I think he annoyed Mo and Sterl after a while. He did the work. Good live and good vocals. He got a bad deal. He even played with Lou in 1975, so all is forgiven?

  • @jwardbass4452

Doug was arguably a better (and by that I mean more melodic) bassist than Cale, he contributed a lot to Loaded and he still gets no love from the fans. Squeeze isn’t even a terrible album it’s just a bit lukewarm and uninspired relative to their earlier albums. Completely undeserved hatred

Your opinion about Doug Yule is as relevant as mine about astrophysics, you know. You know shit about the band.

    • @victorlabouche6471
      @victorlabouche6471 5 років тому +19

Reed invited Yule to play on 2 of his solo albums, (Coney Island Baby - he's playing on the bonus tracks), as well as Sally Can't Dance, Yule plays bass. So I guess if he was just a session player he sure as hell managed to be in the Velvets for 3 years, contributed about 85% of Loaded, and is all over the 3rd album. Oh - he also sings the lead vocal on 6 amazing songs as well. But you know, talk about him being a session bass player (you do know he played ALL the lead guitar solos on Loaded right?) You're welcome for schooling you on Doug Yule.

Unlike many, I really like DY's contribution to the Velvets (even "Squeeze" - it has some great songs"), but as a person, the guy was an a**hole! E.g. denying he'd ever heard the "Lou Reed" or "Transformer" albums. Poppycock! Why do so many musicians TRY to claim disinterest about an ex-bandmate's work! Pathetic really.
