Also since the actor of Rimmer maybe couldnt have done it for the 7th season at all, It was initialy thought that Rimmer would die saving the whole crew doing this...
Wich actually fits good with his "Better Dead than Smeg" from the previous episode. And the fact that this whole battle is his first brave moment.

Shamefully, there are a lot of the extras I still haven't watched yet, so I hadn't seen that bit yet. But I've always wished they'd used the alternate ending that's on the Smeg Ups (or was it Outs?) and let Arnie be the hero for once, so I'm particularly fond of your alternate opening (not to mention all your other Dwarfy goodness). :)

I'de prefer if this was kept in and they removed Lister's explaining it bit to the camera from the show

This woulda also served *most superbly* for the proposed wrapping up of the series, as originally intended by Grant Naylor (Not Margaritas....it's urine re-cyc!)

I prefer this end for "out of time". Because?. Well, when the red dwarf guys discover the time drive, this fact results in future travels and adventures, and produce a alternate future versions of themselves when can back in time. If the time drive is destroyed, the future versions dies because the future time travels never occurs. Another people says that Lister is right in 7x01 because if the future crew destroy the starbug, the time drive will be destroyed anyway. No. The versions of the future dont want destroy the starbug (they want the time drive), they with the future starbug shoot a ray that kill inmediately to the select victim and dont destroy anything more. If Rimmer dont destroy the time drive, he will die too with the rest of the crew (the last shot was for him) and after the future crew abord the present starbug and will get the time drive. In 6x06 in the end of the chapter we can see an "explosion" but is not the original starbug. Is the future themselves vanish in the dust eternal of the time.

+Nachuelerrimas If they destroy the time drive, their future selves can't return. The reality in which their future selves exist becomes a paradox. It exists because in the multiverse theory every choice or every cause that is ever taken leads to a new dimension, a branching off into an exponentially increasing number of varying realities. However, it is a logical impossibility. So, does this alternate dimension exist or not? Maybe both, and maybe that is an inherent paradox of the multiverse theory, not just a paradox of time travel. If so, there are two separate realities present simultaneously in Out of Time, the reality which is true for the future selves and the reality which is true for the present selves.
This is a sci-fi description of the multiverse theory which fits other events, such as Lister being his own father and going back in time to get the curry that disappeared because the went back in time to get it, the Inquisitor erasing himself from existence, JFK assassinating himself and all (squid-related) hallucinations, dreams, virtual reality games and so on. Lister does say that it is a paradox. Maybe the reality in Tikka to Ride is a dimensional branch where certain causes led to certain consequences such that some consequences are caused by events in the reality that was true for the future selves while other consequences are caused by events in the reality that was true for the present selves. This is just one of a myriad of branches though because different combinations have led to different dimensions popping into existence. I guess this also fits with Rimmer suddenly becoming alive after Lister changes history by becoming the inventor of the tension sheet and Rimmer accidentally changing things back to normal, with the exception that he, for some unknown reason, is alive and not a hologram in the new dimension. Of course, he dies shortly thereafter in this new dimension, so perhaps it doesn't have a lasting effect, maybe paradoxes are "sorted out" eventually.
In the specific dimension we are shown, most consequences belong to the dimension of the present selves. Only a few "intrusions" from the paradoxical future are apparent. One such intrusion is that the crew remember having encountered their future selves. This is from the wiki: "Kryten explains that 'dimensional anomalies' caused by this time paradox had expanded the engineering section, the cargo bay section and the maintenance ducts by over 212%. Apparently parts of the upgraded future version of Starbug from the time line they erased also came to co-exist with the present Starbug."
However, this dimension might be unstable and might get "sorted out." If so, the consequences of the future selves would eventually be undone. When Starbug crashes in the rebuilt Red Dwarf with the resurrected crew, the additions to the Starbug are de facto undone. Then, of course, Rimmer goes into the mirror universe to find a cure for the corrosive virus that is destroying Red Dwarf, which creates another set of dimensional branches and we're not sure which one we're watching or if it's stable.

But the dark part they did use - the only part they didn't show was him shooting the time drive and saving the rest of the crew. I always figured they didn't use it just because it would be too out of character to let Rimmer be the hero, though I would have liked to see them make the exception just that once. But then, as you say, I suppose he became enough of a hero when he took over for Ace, so... :)
