Recently picked up the MS-3 and loving it. The perfect multi-effects unit for someone who already has a decent set of pedals and amp (i.e., no modeling necessary), and for someone who plays both bass and guitar. Thanks for posting the review.
Great demo. As always, tom could play through anything and sound like the virtuoso that he truly is. Tom, if you're paying attention to the comments, your playing makes me practice more. That statement comes from an instrumental rock guitarist so please take that as the greatest compliment I could possibly pay to another guitarist. Love your legato phrasing.
...and the G-System could power the loops at that, and of course the effects were great, but it was such a behemoth of a board. The MS-3 totally has it beat as far as price point and portability goes. Also, I find it easier to invest in a switching system that can contribute effects than forking out the same amount (or hundreds more) for a switcher that may have more loops but no effects. I'm hoping Boss is testing the waters with this and eventually comes out with another more robust version (MS-4 or 5?) incorporating stereo loops, MIDI IN/Thru, and hopefully some of those new 96k effects introduced in the MD-500 & RV-500. I'd definitely pay more for that.
Yeah, that's what I would do. Maybe Chain my Muff & Comp (or if that dyna comp is good enough I would throw a trem) in one loop, O/D on its own, and then either my analog delay and/or reverb. You could get creative with 4-cabling.
Ha! My question is answered even before I ask. Thank you Brett. My controller is on order. Now that I can use my Dark Matter with my Carbon Copy -as one sound , Bob's my Uncle!
@@nevillepark4068 Neville Park - Did you get the MS 3? Do you love it? Any regrets? See anything better out there? I play in a cover band. The MS 3 looks tempting. Considering this.
not a huge pedal guy & sold my previous multi-fx units. Bought this .. sounds great and really nice unit. Internal fx sound really good. Thinking I can sell some pedals now 🤔
By the way, each of the 3 loops can represent multiple pedals that you would use in a specific order. Also.. let's say that you will only use a TS style pedal on 3 songs in your set and you prefer a Timmy style on the rest, you can turn one or the other on in the same loop before the song starts and now that patch does one or the other. 4 cable method for the time effects is becoming required in many situations, and this pedal does that. 4 years later you can try a used one and see if it is for you. Sell it if not.. or sell it and get a brand spanking new one security and longevity.
I love it especially because of the size and weight... G-system was easily the most convenient board I've used, and now I have an option of having it at 1/3 of size and weight....cool! :)
Hi. I just bought myself a Blues Cube Artist and ordered a GA-FC to control it. Can this Boss MS-3 replace the GA-FC in terms of controlling the amp, switching channels, boost on/off, tremolo on/off and so on. And can you do tap-tempo of the amp tremolo using the Boss MS-3? Or is the MS-3 an add-on to the GA-FC? Thanks for the great video. Really hoping for a reply.
Hi there what is the best approach with the Boss MS-3 when it comes to mix board connections, there are some places they don't like guitar amps and cabinets on the stage and they go directly to the mixer, any information provided will be really appreciated, Thanks
One way to prevent this is to put a delay and/or reverb pedal after the ms3. Choose pedal(s) that can change via MIDI while keeping trails for extra points.
I dont really here much difference with analog and multieffects (digital pedal) Im only using a small amp so im not sure if there is a big tonal difference in the live setting, anyone?
Hi! I just got the MS3 a week ago. Played alive with it and loved the sound. I would like to know, if I can split two different distortions to two amplis? Example: Loop 1 - dist1 - amp1 Loop 2 - dist2 - amp2 I would like to switch one to another, like in stereo. Thanks in advance
cause most guitarists don't care about digital simulations of distortion pedals and use outboard analog stuff instead. Other multifx units like TC don't even bother including them.
All these reviews, but none that compares the actual quality of the effects to their corresponding pedals. I have a ton of BOSS stompboxes. I just want to know if these effects are up to snuff.
It's not a new concept at all. The TC Electronics G-System was the first product to realise this idea/concept; but the Boss MS-3 is more portable though.
this unit looks very cool but its way too much pricy 4 what it does n the Boss sound has been there 4 so long that people ears are kind of sick to hear it on each unit they make ...my Digitech RP-360 is way more interesting to play with since it has tons of amp n cab sims which are great 4 most of them ...n it cost less than half of the price of this unit + 10 effects by chain in any order n a super cool Amplitube like editing interface called NEXUS ...I prefer the thin sound of Digitech than the very fat sound of Boss coz if you wanna add some fatness to your sound just put a tube preamp pedal (like the Blackbird) before it n its done !!!
You should release a warning: Not ALL pedals are compatible with this system. My Line 6 Space Chorus could damage anything digital coneccted to it. It´s really a bad fx that doesn´t like with other FX´s ..... specially OD/DIST/FUZZ fx .... ground issues that can kill any digital partner .... for sure !!!!!!!
Stop talking. More playing. Other than your intro riff that only shows distortion and compression I couldn't find how this unit sounds. I jumped to 7 random times and only found talking

Your reviews Tom are equally as good as your stellar guitar playing. thanks a million !!

watched this just because TOm was dong the demo. What an awesome talent.

Nice video man!
It CAN actually incorporate more than three external pedals, you would just have to chain them together within one of the three loops.
Yeah, that's what I would do. Maybe Chain my Muff & Comp (or if that dyna comp is good enough I would throw a trem) in one loop, O/D on its own, and then either my analog delay and/or reverb.

I have an ES-5 and run 7 pedals. It has 5 loops.

Can you set the external loops to the footswitches?
Loved that preset 4 at 15:20 Steve Lukather tone. What were the effects on it please?

Eleventy one!
It WAS done before, and it is called TC Electronic G-System. Otherwise, very nice review, thanks!
I just noted that above before reading your comment. I have to say I like it though, especially the price.
I love it especially because of the size and weight... G-system was easily the most convenient board I've used, and now I have an option of having it at 1/3 of size and weight....cool! :)
Actually it was done before by Boss with the ME-X about 20 years ago.
I've owed a G-System in the past and this is a far superior product. Highly recomend checking it out.

I have the same question. Just bought a BCA with GA-FC but I want to control all features of the amp with the MS-3. Is this possible?
Same here. I have Boss Katana head and would like to use MS-3 like the gentlemen in their questions. If possible, then I want this.. ;)
Boss are just killing at the mo, ahead of any trend (and Vox too)
Amazing that this item is still available. Big question - is there an audio dropout when changing presets?
Yes, but only when changing patches. Not in manual mode
What guitar is that?
"noisy stool"? that's a fart! ahah joking. nice video, very explanatory in a very easy to understand way.

The MS3 cuts off Delay and Reverb Trails when you change presets. How do you prevent this? As for me this is a no no for live situations.
One way to prevent this is to put a delay and/or reverb pedal after the ms3. Choose pedal(s) that can change via MIDI while keeping trails for extra points.
Is this not just a small version of a G-system?
I dont really here much difference with analog and multieffects (digital pedal) Im only using a small amp so im not sure if there is a big tonal difference in the live setting, anyone?
Hi brother Great videos keep up the good work. I have a question for you does the Ms3 has tap tempo? Thank you God bless
and the signal path is?
How can I use my dd500 and rv500 and md 500 with these unit
Erick Johnson??
What guitar are you using? Nice Demo!
No TAP tempo on the BOSS MS3?
Pretty sure you can also tap tempo. Even with an external switch.
Hi!
I just got the MS3 a week ago. Played alive with it and loved the sound.
I would like to know, if I can split two different distortions to two amplis?
Example:
Loop 1 - dist1 - amp1
Loop 2 - dist2 - amp2
I would like to switch one to another, like in stereo.
Thanks in advance
You've likely figured this out by now but you can't split the loops. Loop 1 + Loop 2 + Loop 3 are basically treated like one big long loop.
Gotta get this !!!
What brand guitar are you playing ?
It's a Patrick James Eggle PJE 96. It's listed in the sound affects web site!
....is there a reason why no one - and i do mean no one - ever demos the internal dirt/overdrive/distortion/fuzz tones?
cause most guitarists don't care about digital simulations of distortion pedals and use outboard analog stuff instead. Other multifx units like TC don't even bother including them.
somebody bought it in 2020? i do :) love this unit....
that's a nice guitar you have there, what is it?
It's a Fibenare .... I think - www.fibenare-guitars.com/
Patrick James Eggle 96. You can find it listed in the sound affects website!
Great demo but that Seinfeld Soft Talker preset gets distracting.
no analog dry-thru
Just like the TC G system only smaller. The older I get the more I like the smaller footprint!
Just came to watch Tom play 😅😅😅..
He keeps swinging for the tremolo arm lol

It's like a poor mans G System. very cool. Or a Super Katana floor model. ,,, very cool too.
It just needs 10 loops
I'm sorry for missing the point here, but I got more carried away by your guitar skills
this unit looks very cool but its way too much pricy 4 what it does n the Boss sound has been there 4 so long that people ears are kind of sick to hear it on each unit they make ...my Digitech RP-360 is way more interesting to play with since it has tons of amp n cab sims which are great 4 most of them ...n it cost less than half of the price of this unit + 10 effects by chain in any order n a super cool Amplitube like editing interface called NEXUS ...I prefer the thin sound of Digitech than the very fat sound of Boss coz if you wanna add some fatness to your sound just put a tube preamp pedal (like the Blackbird) before it n its done !!!

More than showing the demo...he talks too much
Stop talking. More playing. Other than your intro riff that only shows distortion and compression I couldn't find how this unit sounds. I jumped to 7 random times and only found talking
300.00 affordable? So ad up all the other music stuff and think... everyone thinks this shit is affordable, GGGG
